  • Presenter Ramona Papali'i explores the Māori custom of returning the placenta to the land, the Samoan ceremony of betrothal, and the practice of traditional Samoan tattoo. Viewers are offered access to a Niuean ear-piercing ceremony and the investiture of a Fijian chief. There are stories of walking statues at Rapa Nui (Easter Island) and of the goddess Pele's volcanic beauty in Hawaii. Papali’i interviews local knowledge keepers in each land, revealing what's at the heart of Polynesian culture: family, community, and people.

    As a Samoan/Polynesian I enjoyed this film because it was a realistic portrayal of the people of the South Pacific and showed their own abundance of resources . Unlike others Polynesians have existed for thousands of years and existed without all the assistance of others. Their navigational skills, home building which I hope someone will take up as a film, and complexity of their own cultures without worldly influences. They created their own world .

      In Samoa, they used to bury placenta in the ground and they would plant a coconut, a breadfruit etc in that place so it will grow and be fruitful, just like they wish the baby to be as they grow up!

    13:40 is 100% right. Fiti doesn't mean Fiji Islands. It is talking about Rotuma. A trade took place between the Samoan travellers and the Rotumans whereby the Samoans gave the Rotumans their "tree of life" and the Rotumans gave them the tattoos. If you can find the early drawings of Rotumans then you'd find the tattoos in the same areas only their tattoos were different. It contained birds and animals etc,...

    • @user-mw8oo5du4h
      @user-mw8oo5du4h 10 месяцев назад

      It's not only in your songs but also in our knowledge passed down generations. Just as our original language has changed, don't expect every Rotuman to know this piece of history.

    • @benbasaga2013
      @benbasaga2013 8 месяцев назад +2

      No Fiti is talking about Fiji because that is what Sa calls Fiji and even a word such as Togafiti exists to show the relationship they had since ancient times that meant trickster but literally means Tonga and Fiji. And the story of the tatau coming from Fiji is accurate because in the islands of Fiji only the women received the tattoo not the men and Fiji and Samoa as well as Tonga has been interacting with each other since ancient times and share blood

    In Samoa the placenta of a girl is buried outside doorway of house so she will grow up to be a wife. Placenta of a boy is buried on the beach so he will grow to be a fisherman.

      Fiji is Polynesian as well culturally and linguistically, and has had relationships with Tonga and Samoa since ancient times. The tattoo is likely to come from Fiji because only the women would be tattooed and it was done by the women and not for/by the men
