Im a 39 year old man who is probably having a midlife crisis and suddenly wanted to learn sewing. I recently bought a Janome HD2200 similar to this machine. I feel like Im in a classroom watching your video and enjoyed it thoroughly. 👍🏼
It’s a fairly robust machine - if you try using a thick needle size 100. Possibly jeans size 100 and long stitch length - try it out go slowly if motor struggles then you know you’ve pushed the machine to its limits and risk damaging motor x
Thanks for the comments -the information about the bobbin case and thevbottom tension is mentioned - and also when you come wind thread onto a bobbin you can see that tension is needed to do this and is described in the video The machine will have been set as a normal tensions across all the tension areas. However if you have a look at another video we have done - it might help you a little It is for the Bernette B35 machine showing mainly free motion but we talk about tensions aswell - yet that machine is similar to the janome 423s for purposes of tensions and attaching the free motion foot so do take a look at that hope it helps. Here’s is the link if that helps. - tensions are discussed nearer the end of this video - it will help you when you want to do free motion sewing ruclips.net/video/ufWUunO4dz8/видео.htmlsi=EBH3vQhZLUzD6hu8
If your meaning the dial on the LH side of the machine - then It’s the presser foot pressure dial - normally you don’t need to alter it - but if you turn it to a lower number you will find that you are able to lift the actual presser foot up away from the feed dogs very easily - almost bounces up and down - meaning that when you place the foot down onto the feed dogs in the normal way ready to see - - the pressure being applied to the feed dogs is less than normal - this will help when using difficult fabrics that have a coating on them like waterproof plastic type fabrics for example where using the normal pressure or high number ( which applies even more pressure ) would hinder the fabrics from feeding through the machine smoothly - and where they may even get stuck so by altering the pressure dial accordingly it will help feed thicknesses of fabric through easier if it’s getting stuck when it’s on normal setting most times you don’t need to alter it Hope that helps
There are some over edging stitches on this machine which are similar to overlocking stitches. Which should work well for that purpose however the overlockers trim the edges of the fabric before sewing over the cut edges all at the same time. The over edge stitching on machine won’t trim the edges there is no cutter attached to the machine Also you will probably need to use an over edge foot for best results as supposed to the general foot The sewing machines will achieve a similar look on most cotton weight fabrics and some stretch fabrics too You’ll need to stitch a test piece of your chosen fabric to see which stitches work best that will suit your fabric
Hey from Germany! Thank you for this nice instruction. May I ask what setting you‘d suggest for sewing a jetsey material? I guess it’s an elastic stitch (so S.S. And maybe C). But at what pressure for the foot (1?), what stitch width, what thread tension? I‘m totally lost here bc either my upper thread is ripping or the jersey is tightening 😢
Hi Karen, If I change the pressure foot dial, I still don't seem to be able to move the foot. I can't get an embroidery hoop through it. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks x
This was a very thorough overview, I was hoping though to see what you thought of it once using it for a project. I'm seriously thinking of buying this machine but it's still a lot of money, so I want to be sure. I'm a very experienced sewer and am used to a mechanical Bernina, would you compare this to that? And can you try it with heavy denim fabric and let me know how it does? I'd really appreciate it! Thanks.
This is metal body machine and it does have the same type of bobbin case as the Bernina machines. We have used denim fabrics through this machine as long as you use a jeans needle usually size 100 and a longer stitch length to cope with the thicker fabrics it does pretty well through a number of layers Bernina no longer make the mechanical machines so you would be used to this type of threading on the bobbin area . Bernina machines are all computerised now. So can’t really compare like for like in this instance. Hope that helps
@@KarenDelahuntySewing Thank you yes it helps! I finally ordered this exacty model and so far it seems good! I don't think the presser foot lifts extra high but I need to sew a few things to really see how it does. I like the swing out front on it to access the storage area. It also has fantastic control on the foot pedal, I can go really slow when I want control!
@@marymcandrew7667 thanks for letting us know our video helped with your decision to purchase the Janome 423s machine Also if you push the presser foot lever up a little higher than you think it will go you will find it will raise the foot higher you feel a little resistance so apply a little pressure and it will work. Happy sewing
Have you made sure that you have pushed the width control slider onto the max width of 5 so the machine needle can do zig zag /decorative stitches if it’s on zero the needle will only stitch in the centre position on the feed dogs and will only do a straight stitch
@@KarenDelahuntySewing Thankyou for your quick reply. Yes I re read all the instructions about zig zag and the other stitches. But nothing helped. I have now had to take it be repaired because I have tried everything else. All your instructions were great. Thanks for all the tutorials you do .
Makes sure your top threads are correctly in and through the tension discs at the top of machine always tread with the presser foot lifted up this ensures tension discs are fully open to allow the thread to get right into the tension area also check your needle replace if needed is it correctly inserted and check your bottom thread is in the correct way and again check it’s slowed into the tension on that bobbin case your top tension for Normal thread weight should be set to a 4 Just go over the video again to help you aswell
@@Karendelahunty thanks a lot for concern . I have checked all these directions yet not working. How to open the upper part of machine so I fix the thread tight . My upper thread is very loose.
There is a mention about this. Within the first couple of minutes into the video also if you slide the top right hand slider to the left so it goes to the orange SS symbol then when you select the stitch you want just like you would for the other stitches the machine will see put the relevant orange stitch. The Ss stand sir satin stitches or stretch stitches

This is a wonderfully helpful review, thank you! I'm considering this machine vs the J3-24; do you think this is worth spending the extra money?
