Woke at 3:30am found your documentary could not stop watching. Your strength to push through fear and pain but not quit says everything. Im 70 you inspired me to hike a mountain and find myself once again. Thanks
I think that it was so wonderful to hike this trail solo. Aren't you glad that you did not listen to those folks who thought you were crazy? I went much slower than you did, and had to stop early at Independence due to one knee not working. I went back the next year to finish the OV to Mt. Whitney and out at WP. I was on trail for a total of 42 days, I think only hiking from 2 to 8 miles per day. (I was 67 & 68 when hiking.) I finally got a new knee at age 72, so now I am hoping to get back onto some other trails at some point, but with a lighter pack. Happy Trails from the Energized Tortoise.
That cut at 13:18 was just *chef’s kiss.* The emotional rollercoaster is beautifully captured right there haha. Your sense of humor about it from the edit chair is the cherry on top.
Hi Morgan, I just watched your adventure. I became a grandfather about a year ago. I wish you could know how much happiness and joy you brought to his life. He must have been very proud of you. Thank you for sharing ❤
I've watched many videos on the JMT, done a lot of it myself. I have never though, seen such a deep emotional and life transforming video like yours. Without knowing you, I have to say I am so proud of you and your Grandfather would be too. Congrats on an amazing journey, finding yourself, and being vulnerable enough to share it in such an inspiring way with us. I wish you all the best for your future
I promised myself I would be on my bike by 815 this morning... but I couldn't cut out before seeing you summit Whitney! I too cried hearing your grandfather's message. I love when he says, "you can quit this minute, and I'd still be proud of you." (probably not the exact quote, but you know what I'm talking about). Thank you so much for sharing this epic journey with the rest of us. It was beautiful, it was inspiring, it was motivating. And most of all - it was uniquely yours. Again, thank you!
Great video! I'm an avid athlete and I love the outdoors. I did so much hiking in my youth, but I'm approaching 50 and so busy with family, kids and my job, that I've neglected that love of my life. The JMT is something I yearn to do, and I am hatching a plan to do so on the summer before my 50th birthday. Videos like this really do inspire. Thanks!
I hiked with so many different age groups from 17-70! It’s a matter of the mind. Prepare for it and know to hike your own hike. Plan for extra days and don’t push it. It is amazing….
Morgan Congratulations on completing something that only a faction of the population will ever accomplish. By now I am sure you are back into “civilization” and living out your “normal” life, but I want to let you know that those memories will be with you forever. Any day, at anytime, something will take you back to the mountains, and you will once again be in your happy place. I know this because I too was a Thru Hiker in 2000, at the age of 53. Now that I am 75, I know that I will never again, see the night turn into day while climbing to the top of Mount Whitney, but all I have to do is close my eyes and once again I am climbing to the top of the world. Now as a senior citizen, I have the time to watch videos like your that help me live again those spiritual moments, observing the wonders of Mother Nature. I know that the likes of the Golden Staircase and Forester Pass, were exceptionally tough, but now all I can remember is the glory of being at the top and the sense of accomplishment of what I had just done. It gives you confidence that you can face the challenges that lie ahead of you knowing that you can do something great if you just put your head down and take “one step at a time’. So, “Thanks for the Memories” your fellow Thru Hiker, Jim
I am loving this! I’ve attempted this trail two times in 2019 and a 2020. Had to leave the first time due to injury and the second time due to fires. I love how you just keeping it so real
Good for you girl! Very brave to take on the JMT by yourself. I’m now 67 years old and regret not doing the trail when I was younger but had family obligations. My son is now 35 and an avid hiker who wants me to join him on the trail. I’m watching shows like yours for inspiration. I’m an experienced hiker and understand the hardship of the high Sierra which is why I hesitate. I can do this!!
I have been watching videos tp get more prepped for my JMT journey, i BAWLED my eyes out when i heard your voicemail that your gpa left you. your willingness to keep putting one foot in front of the other no matter how hard the road is at that moment is inspiring! thank you for sharing your incredible journey!
I just had the pleasure of hiking a portion of the PCT with you this morning. YOU ARE EVER SO MUCH MORE AMAZING THAN I KNEW AT THE TIME (and I thought you were incredible). Rooting for your every success. I’m looking forward to tracking with your PCT journey. Keep the dad jokes alive and take care of those feet.
What an amazing young lady you are. The voicemail from your grandfather just tore me up. Even though a tragic loss, what a treasure to forever have. The beauty of this trail is amazing and I hope to one day, be able to hike it. Thank you!
Worked forest fires there after high school. Brings back memories. Well done!! Great documentary. You should be proud of yourself. That’s a massive accomplishment.
I've watch you grow into a magical magnificent woman, who like the rest of soul search for who we really are. God has given you many gifts, and I thank you for sharing some of your gifts with each of us. I laughed, I cried. I felt your pain. And I felt your joy. Thank you Morgan....ya did good,!!!! ❤️ Love you.
Thanks for sharing your journey! Watching you summit Whitney made me emotional too. My husband and I got engaged at sunrise up there after completing the HST. It sure is special.
You hid behind a tree after you had food, lunch, out and avoided being seen or smelled by the bear. Incredible. You are brave. You had a lot of fun animal contact. And got video of them. Yes 🙌 🎉
What a great video! I have completed the JMT four times-3 SOBO and one NOBO (in 2021). I plan to do the PCT when I retire, which is in about 5 years. I can't wait to follow along on your PCT journey. Good luck, and enjoy those climbs!!
Once you are in between those big mountain ranges, there is no way out. I think thats why it is called the John Muir Trail. Pretty challenging! Congratulations!
I love your "good morning" and you lake dips! Wonderful experiemce! I remember I bicycled the North Cascades alone when I was 19. Your journey is special and thank you so much for sharing. I'm 55 now and have begun hiking again, mostly day hikes, but I love the beauty of your journey and your story! thank for sharing!
Thanks for sharing Morgan. I am planning my hike in July, and came across your video while running. The message from your grandfather.. no words.. wow. I don't talk about this often but my brother took his life in 2019, which is one of the reasons I'll be doing the JMT -- he will be with me. I also have a message on my phone from him, I hold on to dearly.
Really enjoyed your video! Or should I say, I was more inspired than anything. I'm 71 years old and have had it in the back of my mind, for years to attempt. Maybe----or maybe not. Morgan, you are an inspiration and I will reconsider doing the JMT before my "nightfall". God bless and thank you for being so honest along the way.
Wow!!! What an amazing video. I appreciate you sharing all aspect of the trail life. I imagine it’s an incredibly emotional experience in so many ways. Thanks so much for sharing this. It was a pleasure to watch.
My wife and I have watched a number of takes on this, but your adventure specifically has motivated us to want to commit to this ourselves as soon as next year. Love your content and your adventurous spirit!
This is incredible. Thank you for having the strength and bravery to hike the JMT, to document your journey and to share it so beautifully in this video. I am inspired- this is on my list… and I have doubts - but your video makes me believe I can do it too. Thank you.
what most people don't understand about solo hiking is that you're not really alone. There are people out there. The positive side of it is what most people never experience...THE perfect pace. It's just wonderful. You never feel pulled or pushed. It's golden. Camp is less fun unless you hook up with people. I just walk all day until dinner and bed - which doesn't have to be at dark time according to me. I think the concept of heaven came from those mountains. The closest thing I've ever had to a "religious experience"...it makes sense out there. "and then I got high"....that place is second only to the arms of my wife. He tangata he tangata he tangata - it is the people it is the people it is the people
Thank-you for such a vulnerable look into your journey! How inspiring, I could not stop watching once I started! I am planning this very trip for the future and was looking for something real, not an expert, but raw. Know that your journey is an inspiration to mine and has helped to provide the courage to do the journey for many of the same reasons as yourself!
What an amazing adventure. A dentist lands in your lap. Nuts right!? The universe can be so harsh at times and so ultimately rewarding other times. Love your music beds. You are re a strong soul. Rich in your bounty. May the gods keep and bless you. Thank you for sharing this amazing adventure. ❤️
I’m doing nearly the same route all because of you- I’ve been trying for a regular Happy Isles permit for two years- to no avail- but thanks to you I went outside of the box and will hopefully be doing my solo Sobo on Aug! ❤️❤️❤️
Wow , what a beautiful experience . Thanks for sharing the journey . Some of us might never get a chance to experience this firsthand so thanks . The choice of music was also fantastic.
So your video popped up on my RUclips feed. As I started watching I nearly turned it when I seen you sobbing. I just didn't want to watch some depressing soul sobbing. Something made me keep watching, not sure what it was. I'm glad I did. I realize that everyone goes through some tough times in life. Lots of ups and down just like in the mountains. Thanks for sharing your personal life with everyone who watches your video. Some breath taking scenery in the Sierras would be an understatement. I really need to get back up into the mountains, it has been way to long since I have gone backpacking. Again thanks for sharing.
Thank you for sharing your experience and this amazing video. It is inspiring all the way to Sweden where it gets me thinking of what my hiking adventure will be 🏞️ All the best!
AMAZING Morgan! Beautifuland well made video. What are the chances of meeting a dentist on the trail like that... that was a fuulnny as hell. Congratulations in completing this trial. I look forward to completing this trail also.
1. This is totally for children! It's beautiful! Watch with your parents, kids. 2. You had a chair! Can we get all the minutiae like pack weight etc.? Maybe you have a blog with that stuff. 3. I love, love, love that you talk about how hard it is, to climb, day after day. Hard on the body and the mind. I have done two section hikes now on the JMT, the last one from Duck Pass to Kearsearge Pass. It is a hard hike even for the young and fit. It makes me more proud of what I was able to do at age 57, with altitude sickness! Even though I couldn't finish. I am not done trying, if my body will let me. 4. thank you for sharing your challenges and joys. This is a lovely video! All the best on your next adventure!
Karen, Thank you so much! 1. As a caution I figured I would put that up there 😊 I think it’s fine for kiddos, I just want people to know what’s in it! 2. Yes! I did. I will come out with a RUclips vid on the gear at some point. 3. Yes! Thru-hiking is so hard but so rewarding. 4. Thank you once again!
55 year old child here. I hiked from happy isles to Devils Postpile in 2017, Devils to Bishop last summer, exited the day of the forest closure as no one knew the rules. I have a permit, Devils to Horseshoe meadows this July I can’t wait. We must have been out almost the same time, Morgan, I was just a few days behind you.
Didn’t think I would actually sit through this entire video, but I didn’t want it to end! Made me tear up as you reached the Whitney summit and when you hiked out to the parking lot. I could feel your emotions so pure and intense every step of the way. And your accompanying words were inspiring. I’m planning my solo JMT hike this summer, and I’m thankful I found this video. Thank you for documenting your journey.
Amazing journey Morgan! Way to persevere and press through all the obstacles, both mentally and physically! I am hoping to get a reservation to make this hike happen next summer. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Also, did you ever put out a video that goes over all your gear that you packed in? Again. Great content and thank you for sharing! Cheers! Zach
Beautiful. Just beautiful!! What a wonderfully put together film. So raw and vulnerable. Thank you for sharing it with us. I’ve been watching your pct journey as well and have been loving what you are sharing so far. Looking forward to seeing more from you!
I’m reading a book about John Muir trail and I decided to look up some videos to see the trail and landmarks described in the book. I wasn’t expecting to find such a great video. I had to pause multiple times just to asses my emotions watching this video.
Thank you for sharing your journey! I enjoyed your heartfelt commentary! I have only hiked portions of this trail but would love to do the whole thing someday.
Wow so amazing & inspiring! You have a gift of poetic story telling while still being able to keep it real & genuine. I got teary a few times. Keep up the good work & hike on 🥰
All I can say is "WOW There is a greater power out there that makes such beauty as you've shown us on the JMT! This is some of the most awesome inspiring video just when I need it most to get back up and hike again after a devastating headon collision 3 of us had while hiking the AT last year going off trail to get pizza I doubted myself being able to live again to hike again but after you showed it's ok to cry here I am crying too why??? Suck it up buttercup right... I just have to hike my own hike now... it may be slower and with a noticeable limp but I too can do the JMT....I have to go back and finish the AT 1st a lot of PT to go yet Sorry so long but THANK YOU MORGAN for sharing honesty! It's 5am I'm getting up before GOD does and make him some coffee.....Darrell
Thank you so much for that exceptional footage of mother nature. And also for that incredible honesty with what you let us take part of your emotions. It was wonderful to see the smile finally come to your eyes after having visited the dentist. Congratulations to that effort
So happy to have found your channel. I do a bit of backpacking but have yet to bit the bullet and do a more extended thru hike. Seeing videos like yours is a big inspiration. Looking forward to following along on your PTC hike. Cheers!
CAPTAIN!! Hell yes! This was so awesome! Trent, Liam, and I met you, Alpen Glow, and Anastasia at lower palisade lakes! So glad to get to share some more of your journey, this was so well done. Your video just happened to pop up on my feed, and I realized I'd met you out there!! I loved seeing your Whitney sunrise hike, we caught our Whitney sunrise the next morning. So incredible!
I don’t know you but know the John Muir well… I can say I love the video and am also proud of you! We had a bear 2 years ago just below Forester Pass (Bubbs Creek) pee and lick, maybe bite a pack of ours. Fun as hell but concerning… Great video and thanks again.
Morgan, simply wow... what a great video. I am planning this (2022) year. So, I watched several JMT thru hiker videos so far. But yours is truly unique and inspiring one. Its giving me a scare and inspiration at same time. Thanks a bunch for video.
This was such a great picture of what life is like on the trail. Thank you for sharing! It makes me ready to get out there again! Sorry about your grandpa, made me cry. What a great way to honor him and his message to you. Why is your footage so good? What kind of camera do you use?

KUDOS! What kind of sleeping bag did you have? How cold did it gat at night? Congrats on your great hike!
I used an enlightened equiptment, enigma 10 degrees! I always recommend a silk liner as it adds comfort and temp.
Worked forest fires there after high school. Brings back memories. Well done!! Great documentary. You should be proud of yourself. That’s a massive accomplishment.
Congratulations!
I driving on my way to work and so deep into the history and @24:20 I was like wait! What?!!

The part about your grandpa's voice message made me tear up. 🥺🙂 Thanks for sharing your journey
I summited Whitney 7 years ago for my 50th birthday. It was an experience I'll never forget. Thank you for sharing your adventure.
Wow! The best JMT video I've seen. Doing my hike this August, and I can't wait. Thanks for sharing. 😎👍

Amazing movie! Brought tears to my eyes. You are an inspiration and an absolute badass!
This is incredible. Thank you for having the strength and bravery to hike the JMT, to document your journey and to share it so beautifully in this video. I am inspired- this is on my list… and I have doubts - but your video makes me believe I can do it too. Thank you.
I am so glad it inspired you! That was the goal. You can 100% do it! You just have to know it will be hard. It makes it so much more rewarding!

Great video, you are so authentic. Thank you for taking us with you😊!!

I’m reading a book about John Muir trail and I decided to look up some videos to see the trail and landmarks described in the book. I wasn’t expecting to find such a great video. I had to pause multiple times just to asses my emotions watching this video.
Awe! That’s so sweet! I think I had to pause on the trail many times to assess my emotions 😂

There is a greater power out there that makes such beauty as you've shown us on the JMT!
This is some of the most awesome inspiring video just when I need it most to get back up and hike again after a devastating headon collision 3 of us had while hiking the AT last year going off trail to get pizza
I doubted myself being able to live again to hike again but after you showed it's ok to cry here I am crying too why??? Suck it up buttercup right... I just have to hike my own hike now... it may be slower and with a noticeable limp but I too can do the JMT....I have to go back and finish the AT 1st a lot of PT to go yet
Sorry so long but THANK YOU MORGAN for sharing honesty! It's 5am I'm getting up before GOD does and make him some coffee.....Darrell

I don’t know you but know the John Muir well… I can say I love the video and am also proud of you! We had a bear 2 years ago just below Forester Pass (Bubbs Creek) pee and lick, maybe bite a pack of ours. Fun as hell but concerning… Great video and thanks again.
