I created a RUclips account JUST to say, this is the best tutorial I have ever watched. I am halfway through the dress and it is looking great! Thank you!
This is the first video by you that I've seen and I already subscribed - I'm honestly blown away by your style. I got into sewing a few weeks ago (as I needed to make some face masks, yay 2020) and it quickly became a hobby. BUT. As a total beginner I often feel clueless as to what to do and why. I've kept watching all these youtube tutorials making beautiful dresses, skirts and whatnot, but the other creators usually skimp on instructions, or give instructions so convoluted that I feel lost after a minute. So I end up wistfully watching the finished product and feeling like I could never do that... But your instructions? Detailed, logical, straight to the point... simply perfect. You really have a gift for educating others. THANK YOU, now I know what my go-to sewing channel is going to be :) Not only do I feel like I can do this, I flat out look forward to making this dress. It's super empowering :)
Thank you for taking the time to type this! So glad you enjoyed the videos. I always tell myself my videos are too long but i am glad you guys appreciate the detail. Hope you keep watching! Thanks again. :)
thank you SO much! this tutorial was so clear and easy to follow and the dress is gorgeous😍 I’ve been looking for a good video explaining cutting on the bias so I can make a satin slip skirt and now I finally feel like I understand it!!
Thanks for this! Just wanted to suggest, rather than using all the rulers to find you bias grainline, you can just draw a little box (1”) around your straight grain line than draw through the corners to find your bias. So easy, and no lining up rulers :)
thank you so much! this is the most clear tutorial i have ever watched dregarding making a slip dress! everything was so perfectly explained and you made me feel like i could do it myself, even with my developing sewing skills! you are amazing!!!
Wow" You're the best and the best best tutorial I have ever seen so far on RUclips for making silk 👗 dress 🥰😘, it was so clear, well explained. I was able to do my pattern on my paper 😂. Thanks so much for sharing, God bless you and give you more knowledge and more win 🥰😍🙏. I never been sew before.
Omg girl...you are the best..i have struggled the whole day because new in this and I couldn't find any better tutorial...so easy and so well explained...thank you so much girl ...😍🤩😍🤩
Such a beautiful dress and you look amazing in it. Thankyou so much for sharing this tutorial, I will definitely make this lovely dress. Regards from down under Australia Rene xo
Hi, great tutorial. Just wondering weather you divide the measurement by 4 and THEN add an inch. Or do you add an Inch and then divide by 4. It gives different results depending which way you do it
You are a great instructor!! I agree with the last commenter, such a clear tutorial. Do you always have to cut a slip dress on the bias? I’m asking because I have a silk fabric that would not be long enough if cut on the bias.
You can get lots of bveautiful poly satin and silk satin faberics from East Indian and Pakistani stores where they also sell saris --not expensive, either. Thanks for clarifying about the strips being cut on the streaight of grain. I understood, when you sew bias seams that you are supposed to stretch them as you sew and even hand baste them first, But this seams to work. Also, when you hem the slit, what do you do at the to of the slit? Do you split the side seam or what to make it smooth at the top of the slit? Also, I think you are a genius and I enjoyed watching you draft your pattern.
Hi! @14:22 shows you how i finished the slit. It is cut from the side seam so I just finished up the edges and made a stitch along the edges all the way to the top. Thanks for watching! x
Thank you for sharing! Question... When creating the back pattern do you also take the bust line down by one inch (like you did on the front so theres more room under the arms) so the underarms meet? I found my back was an inch higher then the front and didn't match up.
This was so great! I love your energy and you are a really good teacher! I am just wondering why we divide by 4 for the measurements. I am new to sewing and have a brain that needs to know why so I can remember things! lol
Hi! Great question. Since we begin drafting half on 4 parts of the pattern (2 half fronts and 2 half backs). We need to find the waist measurement for just that one half so we divide by 4. Hope this helps! :)
Saleemah, I'm so glad you asked this question because I was wondering the same thing! "Did you cut the strips on bias also?" I am more happy because Sew Addicts answered! Lesson learned: Make Bias strips for work cut on the grain. Make strips cut on the grain for bias cuts!
I recommend cutting on bias for free flowing fabrics to ensure maximum drape. You are also welcome to cut on bias for cotton.. but cutting on grain works just fine as well. :)
I can't believe I have been struggling to fold the fabric on the bias - make the pattern full size and don't fold the fabric! Genius! Or, really obvious and I am soooooo stupid....
Amara, I just wanted to add a little information about fabric cut on the bias as a follow up to your question "Why do you cut it on a bias?" in response to making this beautiful Slip Dress. Lots of skirts etc are cut on the bias because they give more stretch and drape, but if you are sewing a heavy fabric like a woven wool, you should do a little research first. The weight of these heavier fabrics will distort if you don't treat them first, so the neckline, armhole, and hem begin to droop when you wear them, and sadly, there goes your expensive fabric and all your time! It's gravity stretching these fabrics... Heavy fabrics need to be hung up and allowed to stretch before cutting your pattern. I would hang the fabric over the shower pole on a diagonal, then repress before cutting. Pressing and Ironing are not the same thing. Happy Valentines Day!
This is the most clear tutorial I’ve seen for making a slip dress. Thank you!!

Gorgeous
Great tutorial! My first time seeing an explanation of how/why to cut on the bias. I love your details on the raw edges.
Sew Addicts 🧵 thank you for creating & sharing this! Your creation is stunning, sewn on the bias is the only way for good ‘drape’
Thanks for this! Just wanted to suggest, rather than using all the rulers to find you bias grainline, you can just draw a little box (1”) around your straight grain line than draw through the corners to find your bias. So easy, and no lining up rulers :)
Thank you for details and explaining how to measuring for creating pattern, nice dress.

Hi, great tutorial. Just wondering weather you divide the measurement by 4 and THEN add an inch. Or do you add an Inch and then divide by 4. It gives different results depending which way you do it
id say add the inch after but if you want your dress to fit pretty snuggly around your waist you can also do it the other way round
You are a great instructor!! I agree with the last commenter, such a clear tutorial. Do you always have to cut a slip dress on the bias? I’m asking because I have a silk fabric that would not be long enough if cut on the bias.
A bias cut allows the fabric to drape better on the body (less seam lines). You are still able to cut on grain depending on how wide your fabric is.
awesome tutorial,so detailed and clear, thank you !!! was looking for a tutorial like this to make a slip dress just like this one
Was also hoping to see an answer to this... Guess ill have to wing it and see what happens
You’re welcome 😊
I recommend getting a stretchy fabric if you would like to not use a zipper. Perhaps a lightweight knit
Omg yes so excited to make this!! Very clear and simple. I saw other ones and I didn't understand half the terms 😅 this was was so easy to follow!!
Glad it was helpful!
i really love your tutorial very clear and understanding
Great tutorial:) I just want to ask why we put the pattern on the fabric diagonally?
More room and movement within the fabric. Also giving the flare look a natural drape as opposed to cutting an A-line pattern.
so so clear and so so helpful!! thank you

So cute!!!!! Can you please do a tutorial on a button down dress
Definitely sewing this tomorrow. Thanks
Should the fabric strips be cut on the bias as well?
lovely video! do you think if i make this with some stretchy fabric and cut on the bias i could make it work without the zipper?
Definitely. You don't need to cut on bias if the fabric is really stretchy!
Wow this is The only tutorial well i'm so convinced That I can do it. Thank you so much for such a clear explanation
Thank you for sharing! Question... When creating the back pattern do you also take the bust line down by one inch (like you did on the front so theres more room under the arms) so the underarms meet? I found my back was an inch higher then the front and didn't match up.
Yes! You reduce the back as well. :)
Can’t wait to make this! Love love ❤️
Very clear and detailed 🙏
Very nice tutorial, thank you!
This was the best tutorial. Thank you so much for making this video :)
you explain it so well. I am happy i found your channel :D
Do we have to give seam allowance of 1 inch at the armhole as we have done on waist and hip measurements ?
This was so great! I love your energy and you are a really good teacher! I am just wondering why we divide by 4 for the measurements. I am new to sewing and have a brain that needs to know why so I can remember things! lol
Hi! Great question. Since we begin drafting half on 4 parts of the pattern (2 half fronts and 2 half backs). We need to find the waist measurement for just that one half so we divide by 4. Hope this helps! :)
I love this! so easy to understand!!!
Love your energy!!
Wow this is absolutely gorgeous😍😍
Hi , can we fold the material in 2 in bias and put the front pattern paper on the fold line ….or is it important to cut it flat
It is important to cut flat on bias as the silk fabric can shift if folded.
if i dont want the waist just make it to straight cut right ?
omg 1 minute in and i love u already! subscribed straight away!!
Really pretty.
I'm a new subscriber to your channel. Your work is brilliant!!
Best vid🙌💗💗 learnt so much
Simply beautiful! Feeling inspired.
girl i love love love your energy✨✨💓thank you soo much for the tutorial!
wow everything I could have wanted to know you are amazing!
Beautiful
Can I ask a question. Why did you divide it by four ?
Did you cut the strips on bias also?
Hi! No, the strips were cut on grain.
Saleemah, I'm so glad you asked this question because I was wondering the same thing! "Did you cut the strips on bias also?" I am more happy because Sew Addicts answered!

Muito lindo o modelo
Gostei vou tentar fazer.
Me ensina falar inglês por favor.
Obrigada 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
Could this bias method work for other materials such as cotton?
I recommend cutting on bias for free flowing fabrics to ensure maximum drape. You are also welcome to cut on bias for cotton.. but cutting on grain works just fine as well. :)
This si so helpful thank you
I love it, i wanna try
You a good teacher
OMG THANK U SO MUCH IM GONNA TRY THIS OUT ASAP❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Would it be possible to do this pattern on the grain instead of the bias?
Less stretch cutting on the grain but you sure can!
You are so lovely!!!
Girl, your arms are everything. 😍😍😍 Do you have workout videos?
is it recommend to overlock
Yes you can! Careful with over stretching the hem because of the bias draping.
Cute
Love this, thank you! 💗💗
Love it!🤩💙💙💙
thank you, keep doing more stuff
Was following along until the the joining at arms and zipper. Beautiful job though. Thank you
Very nice!!!
You did that sis! & I understand. #subscribed
Very well done 👌🏾🌷🙍🏽👼🏿
Thank you!
Wow I like your video 👌
Thank you so much 😀
I can't believe I have been struggling to fold the fabric on the bias - make the pattern full size and don't fold the fabric! Genius! Or, really obvious and I am soooooo stupid....
❤️❤️
Why do you cut it on a bias?
My question too lol
It gives the fabric a much better drape and the stretch of the bias makes it very comfortable to wear
Amara, I just wanted to add a little information about fabric cut on the bias as a follow up to your question "Why do you cut it on a bias?" in response to making this beautiful Slip Dress.

Great tutorial:) I just want to ask why we put the pattern on the fabric diagonally?
cutting fabric on the bias (diagonally) makes it drape very well.
Thank you! :)
Beautiful
