Thanks! I saw that you have a complete 9,999,999 points Tetris DX run on your channel. Didn't know such a thing existed on RUclips. 2 hours 9 minutes is a very fast completion time (resp. 2 hours 12 minutes if you consider that the Super GameBoy runs a bit faster than a GameBoy). ruclips.net/video/EOgQpgkq0WA/видео.html
Ha, yeah. DX feels like leisure at this point, while the original 1989 Tetris is a whole other beast. I've been playing the original almost daily for months, and have so far only gotten to about 840k once, so I have a ton of respect for the max out. Have you considered submitting it to Twin Galaxies?
I always thought it wasn't possible for people to submit to Twin Galaxies if they didn't come from English speaking countries. Hm, but you aren't from there either and have submitted. I don't think I will do it though. I don't want my real name to pop up and I don't want to pay them money to validate the score. And their record list is kinda bad compared to the HardDrop GameBoy thread. www.twingalaxies.com/scores.php?scores=392&ref=fbshare harddrop.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=1130 840k is closer to 999k than you think. It means you must have survived at least 240 lines in level 20 (assuming 600k after 200 lines), 160 further lines and you are there. I am glad I recorded a maxout now. Otherwise you could have gotten my clicks :P (I assume it will be 3000-ish after a year). Since you come from Denmark: There's also a (Classic)Tetris European Championship held in Copenhagen every year. Just mentioning if you didn't know. Fun fact: In Tetris DX level 30 pieces fall down one row every 2 frames compared to one row every 3 frames in original GameBoy Tetris level 20 (one second = 60 frames). Still, GameBoy Tetris is much harder to max out (Tetris DX has lock delay which is about 0.5 seconds long, a short entry delay and the autorepetition rate is much higher).
Fair enough, it doesn't cost anything though, you just have to be a verified member, validate a few other people's submissions and submit a decent video. You'd get that sweet 1st Tetris spot no doubt! I'm gonna get the maxout one day and go for it ;) Yeah, been thinking about going to the Championship here, I just gotta step up my NES Tetris game.
Hi.. I hope you read this and appreciate my reply. Ive been playing tetris since I first got one like you in 89 and only have played with my thumbs. My scores were recorded on a wall with my height so I always knew what was good. My best scores were 630k 640k with my nemisis also level 20. I managed 247 and a 251 but never any higher. Plenty of 20s.. and 30s.. but brutal anymore.. I think luck can play a part. I heard of someone breaking 300 and I set out to break that magical number.. went through 3 new GBs and recorded games.. but never taped better than 227.. the guy said to me.. if you can get 5.. and 10 easily.. you can get that 300.. I never saw his.. but Ive seen yours and yours is the first one Ive really seen.. Ive never tried cross over technique.. but I understand double pumping the D vs autorepeat.. This is.. Im not sure if inspirational is the right word.. Boss mode god mode.. whatever I dont think I could get to your level.. but I may shoot for my magical 300 using your technique.. I realise its new config.. You have the GB held down?
I'm watching this when I should be last-minute writing a paper on impact craters. Tetris is officially ruining my grade. Must. Not. Play or watch Tetris. BUT IT'S SO SEXY AND MESMERIZING I have issues lol
Very impressive score. I got a pretty good chuckle when you had to amp it up a few times in order to stay alive. :) I like your unique style of cross-handed play. It makes sense. Me playing Galaga, firing a button for 36 years, makes me wonder how long it would take for me to get a max-out utilizing this method of style. Playing normally with the auto-repeat speed has only gotten me to 619,565 points. Awesome job dude!
I was sat here thinking my 600k was good, but this... this is completely and utterly outrageous. From the cross hand play to hypertap madness, the whole video is incredible... You are a GOD amongst mere mortals
I was saying to myself, "too bad, he will not pull any tetris in the B mode, that would have been nice" and boom, it's your very last move! I screamed "YES!" in front of my computer.
Very well played! :) You played so consistently the whole game, except the last tetris, which was crazy :D I'm playing with almost same grip/hand placement as you do, I just use middle and index fingers on my right hand. Just need to get better at level 20, pb is now 592k :)
This is absolutely awesome! I've picked up Gameboy Tetris the past year and gotten completely hooked. I'm able to get to 400.000 (480.000 once) and then it gets too fast for me. I have seen Gameboy maxouts on RUclips before, but they don't really seem all that credible since they stack higher than what seems possible at the high speeds. Your attempt is obviously real as you clearly make an effort to keep the stack low and you show your fingers. It's really impressive! Congrats! You should really post it on Twin Galaxies. By the way, you mentioned that the Super Gameboy runs faster than a regular Gameboy. Why is that?
Consoles are coupled to a framerate. For example, in GameBoy Tetris level 20 a piece fall down 1 row every 3 frames. Each frame, the console system looks which inputs are pressed and proceeds accordingly (calculates new output for the TV). The Super GameBoy (SNES) runs at a 61.1 fps (frames per second), the GameBoy at 59.7 fps. So, for a piece falling down 10 rows in level 20 ( = 30 frames), 502.5 miliseconds have passed on the GameBoy whereas only 491 miliseconds have passed on Super GameBoy, leaving the player less time to react. An interesting case for the importance of framerate is the NES. Nintendo tried to make the NES run at the same framerate as a TV, so that the output of the NES (new processed image) is also updated every frame on the TV. In Europe the video systems ran at 50 fps (PAL), whereas in USA and Japan the video systems ran at 60 fps (NTSC). So, NES games ran usually slower on Europe's NES. As a result, some games received a regional PAL version that changed the timings. One of them is Tetris for the NES: the European version uses smaller frame values until the piece falls down one row (or autorepeats to the wall when you keep pressing D-pad). For example level 9 falling speed is 6 frames per row on NTSC and 5 frames per row on PAL which means that in both versions a piece falls down 10 rows per second on that level. However in level 19, it's 2 frames per row on NTSC and 1 frame per row on PAL which means that a piece falls down 30 rows per second in NTSC but 50 rows per second in PAL. As a result, the NTSC version is still playable at level 19 but the PAL version almost tops you out immediately.
Thanks a lot for the detailed explanation. I recently picked up NES Tetris (PAL) for my Super Retro Trio 3 and I thought level 19 was incredibly fast compared to the videos I've seen from the Classic Tetris World Championship. Thanks to your explanation I now know why. So all the other levels before 19 are the same for PAL and NTSC?
No, for the later levels falling speed is usually 1 frame less per row on PAL, so it's faster from level 10 onwards (and the speed gap becomes bigger and bigger). About 30 people reported a max out for NTSC cartridge on NTSC console, but best reported score for PAL cartridge on PAL console is about 725k. tetris.wiki/Tetris_(NES,_Nintendo) ruclips.net/video/n_vzrZkParU/видео.html
Nice job! Regarding the number of people who have maxed this version out, I'm pretty skeptical that it can be anywhere near 1000. Given how insanely hard it is to do, if you did it, you'd generally want to share the accomplishment in some form. I've seen claims of maxouts, but I've only ever seen 2 done (this one and Dan Z) and know of one other.
Hey Chad, I rooted for you at the Classic Tetris World Championships! 1000 was maybe a bit exaggerated but it's over 100 for sure (I assume 100 alone in Japan). For example from the NES players, Quaid and Thor have maxed out GB Tetris, if I am not mistaken. And in response of The King of Game Boy Tetris article (about Uli Horner), someone tweeted a screenshot of 1000 cleared lines. Then, there are some people claiming of having achieved a max out below DanZ's video (I assume half of them make false claims or confuse it with another Tetris game). It's just that the "dark figure" is so high because people who achieved that in the 90s have moved on to other games, and people in the Tetris community don't really play GB Tetris. Also, it's hard to record (on a non-backlit GB, never tried a GBA). www.vice.com/en_us/article/in-conversation-with-the-king-of-monochromatic-tetris-nintendo-game-boy twitter.com/jtoma527/status/686918309174984705
It's the only way to do it.. you look for the "unicorn" game.. ( extra 4 bars ).. This is easily the best game Every played on tetris gameboy.. The quality of piece selection, the balls to take some tetris opportunities on, the ghost blocking, then playing on the absolute limit once 200+ was reached. 500k score for me is my best, I'm going to have to muscle memory crosswind and see how we go. Interesting I note that the fall rate drops with hypertapping left and right which is something I never realised.. Well *bleep bleep* done.. Been playing since 89 and this is amazing
the fact that it took him 30mins is kinda funny, like ive played games that last hours but i would always take short breaks just to cool down. not all to impressive but still fun to watch.
it's interesting that everyone associates the gameboy with the '80s when it only existed in the last year of the '80s for like 6 months, and wasn't even released in Europe until early 1990. but it was all the same culturally which is why it works
It seems like once you get to level 20 and can play it efficiently then maxing out would be a feasible goal. Like it isn't going to get more difficult speedwise. So, at that point it's just luck and strategy. maybe I'm wrong.
I recorded it in this game tetrisonline.pl/toj_flash/1989.html However, I used a Flash Decompiler to make a change to the piece sequence (I fixed the sequence, that sequence can be generated by a bag randomizer - the randomizer used in nowadays Tetris game).
You only get the space shuttle for clearing B-type level 9 high 5. In A-type the rockets are dependent on your achieved score: 200,000+ points for big rocket, 150,000+ for medium rocket and 100,000+ for small rocket.
I just picked up the Gameboy for the first time in 20 years and got 172 lines. After feeling quite proud of myself I thought I'd look up the record. Big mistake. Feeling of joy gone.
Hey eRR0Rq! How can you play like that!? How can you have your right hand on the D-Pad and have your left hand on the A and B buttons!? How!? And what it vantage is this what even have!?
I put the gameboy on a table and put a book under the back of the gameboy (where the cartridge is located, so that it has ~20 % angle relative to horizontal plane). I sat crosslegged with my elbows touching the legs. And then I just put my left hand first on the GameBoy and my right hand above it. I usually play Tetris on PC and there I move with my right hand and rotate with my left hand. So, switching hands on GameBoy feels more natural to me. I also think I can press the D-Pad faster with my right hand compared to my left hand (I use index and middle fingers in both cases). Being able to quickly move the pieces sidewards is the most important thing in GameBoy Tetris, especially towards the right side.
Just saw this. Why does yours only show level 20? I used to get to lvl 23 quite often. Could never get higher than that tho. Would it have been a newer version maybe?
Maybe, you mean Tetris DX which was released in 1998 for GameBoy Color. Tetris DX looks kinda similar on a non-color Gameboy. One difference is the position of the next piece (on bottom for original GB Tetris, on top for Tetris DX). Tetris DX is easier to survive because of lock delay (the piece doesn't lock immediately when it hits the ground) and higher autorepetition speed (you don't have to hypertap). Tetris DX speed maxes out at level 30.
"Sad that starting at Heart-0 doesn't give you higher points than Normal-9" Yup, one reason why people like to play NES Tetris is that it can be beneficial to start on a higher level than 9. That shortens games.
Wow, that opening thing had me concerned for a bit. I literally thought you were going to play some flash version of the game and I was going to pass out. Also, why are your hands so shaky? Did you drink an energy drink beforehand?

A HYPER-TAPPER?! Havent seen one in a while
Just saw this.
Damn your in it
It took you that many lines?
Joaquin Leon I don’t see any videos of you doing better
WTF !!!! AWESOME !!!!!
And i'm currently only at 389K.
(NES 413K)
Sad that starting at Heart-0 doesn't give you higher points than Normal-9. :-/
"Sad that starting at Heart-0 doesn't give you higher points than Normal-9"
Yup, one reason why people like to play NES Tetris is that it can be beneficial to start on a higher level than 9. That shortens games.
eRR0Rq Like Level 29 ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
I made over 500000 with 200lines, but this is another level!!
Unbelievable
O.o Can’t, stop... Watching.
Who else felt asmr from this?
You are not starting at the highest level? Did you ever start with some of the bars already high on the screen, and get to the rocketship?
he is on the highest level. you could go into heart mode but that provides no score advantage
Wow, that opening thing had me concerned for a bit. I literally thought you were going to play some flash version of the game and I was going to pass out.
Also, why are your hands so shaky? Did you drink an energy drink beforehand?
It sounds like an ASMR...
A year ago I had never heard the term ASMR now almost every video on RUclips is referred to as an ASMR LOL
Fish in fish bowl ASMR
Brushing my cat ASMR
Mopping the floor ASMR
Gameboy Tetris Maxout *ASMR*
best game of all times!
Current world record score for game boy tetris is over 1.600.000 if anyone is curious
❤
28:35 Did this today, it felt amazing.
Hyper tapping on the game boy looks somewhat easier than doing it an nes controller
It was a Good Game. My Record is 453 Lines 👍🏻👌🏻
