I just bought a past fx chorus and it does sound exactly like frusciante's tone, not just the chorus sound but also the break up grit from the pre amp is awesome
My mother broke by mistake my boss ensemble ce 5 a few months ago. Today i got it back fixed..and boom you upload this video, i was wondering for so long about the differences between ce 1 and ce 5..that video was really helpfull!!
@@Vigi she threw a big piece of furniture to my pedalboard! ds2 and wah took a little damage too but they survived! ce 5 was able to oparate, but the double control was smashed. I was lucky enough to get it fixed without much expences..
Awesome, I love these kind of videos! Great comparison/breakdown. I hope we‘ll get even more videos like this :D Btw: I guess you reliced your triungulo lab ce-1 yourself, right? Looks stunning!
Thank you for the feedback. :) A lot of people has said they like it, but it’s actually just natural wear. I used to take it band practice where it was put in a bag with other pedals. :D Also, I got an earlier version of the pedal with a slightly different design. Maybe it ages easier. 🤷♂️😀
Short and sweet video! Overall, to me, I'd say they both are passable for the "sound". But there is a pretty clear difference between the tone of the two. The CE5 seemed to be much more transparent with the guitar tone, the CE1 added a lot of warmth and color. I think I too prefer the prefer what the CE1 does as a whole, but the chorusing from both seems to get the Under The Bridge sounds. I use the CE2W, the CE1 mode definitely adds the color and warmth you'd expect from a CE1. Would be interesting to see just how close it gets if I ever spring for a more faithful CE1 clone.
For me it much more worth to go for stereo, than to invest in a original CE1 or clone! Although a second amp for sure is a big investment! I actually went with two Fender Bassbreaker and the results were awesome! You don't need a 1by1 copy of Frusciantes setup to get nice results.
there's a difference for sure. but the only pedal i've encountered so far that i couldn't get close to the sound of was the wh10 wah. for me it's been important not getting caught up trying to get clones of all his circuits. but let's say you use chorus a lot the way i would use a wah, then might be really important
completly agree on the ibanez wah. I got an vox wah v847 or so and it never got the wah sound like I often enjoyed with the ibanez one. Vox Wah is pretty good for gettin' a different wah tone, but nothing hit me harder than the ibanez wah😃
I actually bought the CE-5 a couple of years ago, when Boss had a take 3, pay for 2 deal going. You could basically get the cheapest pedal for free. Since I wanted to get a looper and the RV-6 anyway, I could basically choose one for free. And the CE-5 was the only interesting pedal for me, that was cheaper than the looper. But I found it underwhelming. It doesn't sound 'bad', it's just sooo subtle, especially in mono, which is how I played at the time. At a reasonable Rate setting, even when Effect Level and Depth is cranked to the absolute maximum, you really just get a subtle, non obtrusive chorus sound, that seems to be meant more like an always on kinda deal rather than a recognizable effect.
I think the CE-2 is too wet, the Ensemble or the Super Chorus are both totally usable for his tones. However, I got a PastFX Mn3007 mini and love it. Got their separate Preamp pedal as well, both are serving me well on a couple of boards.
Great video...I'm trying to build my Frusciante tone (with my own twist/taste) with what I can find used/good price around me. I would love a PastFX CE-1 clone...currently using a Metal Muff Nano for fuzz, EHX Tone Corset Compressor, and have a CE-5 coming soon. Are the settings that are pictured, the settings you used? Thanks!
Since the Malombra is based around the CE2W Ce-1 mode it would have been interesting to hear a comparison with that as well (assuming you put Malombra in Triangle wave mode). Anyway, thanks for the really nice video, I always enjoy those!
Seems to be a common solution (but with the ensemble crunch. Should sound very similar I assume. :) But I would say the CE2W is crucial. You can’t pick up a random chorus. :)
I use a PastFX Preamp Crunch (the preamp only section from their excellent CE-1 clone) into a Maxon ASC10 Chorus and its wonderful. However, i am not going for a close rendition of Frusciante with that setup. If I were, I'd swap the Maxon for a Boss or similar, probably my Danelectro Cool Cat, a very underrated stereo chorus.
Hey thanks dude, loving all these community folks I’ve met through JF! I have a CE-1 pre amp only on waiting list from Will T, that will arrive eventually. I didn’t want to spend the extra 200 Euros at the time as I do have the CE-5. I actually think your CE-5 in the first clip sounds pretty good so will copy that EQ, my question though is what settings achieved the closest you ever got with the CE-5? Thanks man.
@@naylor2006 Hey man! I also want to buy only the preamp (from pastfx) and use a seperate chorus pedal. How did it work out for you? Did it come close to the CE-1 tone?
@@szalokipeter99 hey man, long story short I sold the Labs CE Crunch and got the CED from past FX :), not for any performance reason of favour of either company, just time really and Past FX had an offer on! Thing to remember is that a lot of John’s tone comes from two heavy hitting amps, having one of these helps also but you can even get close with a Marshall MG and a Jackhammer OD pedal, head over to Dave Simpsons channel if you want to hear it that way. What I’ve found is that getting to say 70% of his tone and character is as close as you can get, unless you forensically buy everything and set it up like Will and Ollie, again those guys did a killer video over on Will’s channel, but they pretty much have everything. Even Vigi has a lot of stuff, both amps, pre amp pedal etc but personally as much as it’s close to John’s tone and it sounds fantastic, it’s not there. Vigi if you’re reading this I love your John Tone and I mean no disrespect. So to your question, I have the Past FX CED, DS-2, Big Muff, Micro Amp, SSL-1 strat, Marshall silver jubilee output master on 10 (attenuator of course) and yes, adding the unique preamp circuit made a big difference to the feel and character, it’s very important but the reason for the long message is to help you realise that alone it won’t really help at all, it needs to be paired with an overdriven amp, especially to run DS-2 on max and compress the huge volume jumps you get from the wah etc. I love my John inspired tone and it sounds similar but I have the one amp so it’s never going to be perfect. Also I like his Slane tone which is a bit cleaner, I mean what John tone do we want? :) I think it is worth you visiting Triugulo Labs RUclips and watching their video they did on his tone, might make you appreciate that trying to nail it is near on impossible! Edit, oh yeah you also need a buffer before the CE circuit, like. Boss tuner or DS-2 would do it.
Very interesting comparison, for me ce-1 is unbeatable ❤️. If you have to take only one amp would you rather choose the Plexi or the Jubilee? Maybe you could consider a video comparing the two Marshall!
He vigi do you know why the CE-1 Sounds Odd with my Fender AMP? the other pedals that i have are the DS-2, Ibanez WH10 and the Jackhammer. But my Chorus distorts very much with my setup. As always great Video and Thank You.
You should try to set the CE-1 on high impedance and roll it way back. I use a boss katana with a golden Plexi in front of it and the volume of the CE is on 9 o'clock.
