  • This is the first video in a series of how to build a Big Block Mopar Engine. Using the steps in this series, you can build a big block Mopar at home. The engine being built is a 1970 RB 413 engine from a motorhome. I will be converting this engine into a nice street cruiser for a 74' model Dodge D100, that makes great torque and is very streetable. ‪@NicksGarage‬ will hopefully follow along with me on this build! Is this the most overlooked Big Block mopar engine?

    I remember a Cummins 24v block I built a while back. I went threw it same basic process as you until I got to the bores. I used ATF. Before I used the ATF I used brake cleaner on the entire block mind you. I noticed a broken bolt that I needed to heat. Welp as you can imagine open flame with a although dry block had a puddle of a combo of brake cleaner and ATF all in a pile of kitty litter that is a recipe for a good time. Sure enough heated the bolt which lit the ATF up then dropped into the pile of goo under which exploded in fire setting the whole block a blaze. The flame was so hot and large it scorched the 10 foot ceiling. All we could do is let it burn off. After the fire went out the block was the cleanest I had ever seen. Just had to blow the dust off. Went to paint right after mind you the block was still warm. I had never had paint lay down so good. Built the engine. Put it on a plow truck. To this day 6 years 6 plow seasons and salt seasons that engine is as clean and rust free as the day I built it. Now I don't recommend lighting your shit on fire but if you do do it outside

      I did the same with a Murray riding mower. Carb would leak all the fuel into the cylinders when it sat. I pulled the spark plugs to drain it, and figured I’d go ahead and spin it over to get it all out. 😅🔥

    Great stuff, Joe! When I was about 15 my dad had a 1963 Chrysler New Yorker that had a 413, what a cool car! It was completely bone stock but man, that thing ran good! My brother who is 11 years older has a nice collection of Mopars and before I got paralyzed in 2000 I built a couple streetcars. My very first car was a 1974 Dodge Challenger, before I got my license at 18 my brother and I found a 440 and 727 that we bought from some old lady out of the Chrysler Newport that had been sitting in her yard. I built my very first engine, 10:1 compression, 509/292 Mopar purple shaft camshaft, ported 906 heads, Weiand tunnel ram, 2 Holley 450 carbs, 3500 Hughes converter and a 3.91 sure grip. It ran 12.8 on the motor and 12.0 with the 125 HP nitrous kit that was plumbed in the tunnel ram that my brother gave me. He ran it on his 73 Plymouth Barracuda, racing on the street back in the 80s when I was a kid. Several years after I built my Challenger I took the engine/transmission out of it and sold the car (like an idiot) and I bought a 1968 Dodge Dart that I put the engine/transmission in. I started helping my brother work on his Barracuda when I was 12-13 and I started going with him on the weekends to cruise speedway and race at the illegals every Friday and Saturday night when I was 14-15. Now I'm paralyzed from the chest down from an ATC accident back on May 21st of 2000 and the one thing I miss most is building engines! I wish I knew then what I know now, my cars would have been a lot faster! LOL! Any ways, great to meet another Mopar guy, thanks for the cool videos!

    • @JustMoparJoe
      @JustMoparJoe  2 года назад +1

      Thanks for sharing your story! That challenger sounds like it was sweet! But I bet that dart moved pretty quickly with that big block!

    • @krisjato
      @krisjato 2 года назад

      @@JustMoparJoe No problem man. The challenger was a very nice car, brand new carpet, seats and headliner and it had a console with the slap stick shifter but it weighed 3700 pounds. The guy that I bought the Dart from had cut their rear wheel wells out of it, preparing to narrow their rear end and 4 link it. I didn't have the money so I just riveted in some sheet metal where the back seat had been and in the trunk so it would pass tech inspection. It ran OK but it should've been faster. I never had a valve job done, I simply hand lapped the valves and installed the valve springs that came with my camshaft. Also, my original 71 block that came out of a car disappeared. I dropped off the block, crank and rods at the machine shop and later picked everything up without checking the serial numbers. A year or two later I noticed that the serial number on the block was different and it had a T at the end which I believe makes it a truck block and a quite a bit lower compression. It was still a fun car, even as mild as the engine was it ran 12.01 @ 112 MPH on the motor and 11.23 @ 117 MPH on a 150 HP shot of nitrous. Any ways, thanks again man! I hope you and yours have an awesome holiday season! Take care!

    make sure to use a small wet n dry shop vac to suck up all that metal grindings and metal powder out of the engine and any of the holes. I do all the same but also take out any sharp edges and corners in the water ports to the pump housing and also I port the oil pump ports. Also open up the new oil pump and inspect and CLEAN it and port it to the block.. Anytime you can make anything, air or fluid move easier you are building a more efficient engine. When I am done with all my sanding and tapping and shaping it is time for the machine shop to do their thing and get everything clean that I can't...

      I like to do mine after the cleaning cycles and before the pressure wash. It’s a preference thing. Typically if an engine is torn down, the bolt holes are void of anything if the previous bolts were just occupying the holes. I’d hate to build one without checking the threads for cleanliness before hand. This way I can never get caught saying, “Well they were clean before it went to the machine shop.”

    I think the block has been changed. I have had a few 1967 440 they have one rib down the side of the block. This block has many block stiffing ribs in the out side. Which would make 72 or later. My brother in law had a 1972 dodge 800. It broke the crank two times at the last crank journal. You might want to have it checked for cracks. The cure was to have crank radiuses at the crank journals instead of the sharp angle the factory put on the crank.

    Hi Joe, great video! I heard you mention the 451. When I bought my 65 Coronet the guy said it was a 451. I have had the car 6 years and I have only confirmed that it’s a 400 BB out of a 73 Charger. My question is how could I tell if it has the 440 crank with out tearing it apart? Also would it even matter when I’m choosing a cam and upgrading my heads. I wanted to order the heads and cam before I tore into it. Thanks👍

      In my mind, you’d need to at least pull one head, then measure the piston height at tdc, then turn over to bottom center, and measure again. It would certainly matter because you’d need to see the stroke and the top of the piston(measured cc’s of the valve reliefs) before buying heads. A faster way could be to take a cheap boroscope and look in the plug hole. If it’s a flat top with no reliefs, it’s likely stock pistons(which would likely mean stock stroke. If it’s a forged piston it would have reliefs and possibly some dish to it, if it’s an action pump gas engine. Might also see a number cast onto the piston top, in some scenarios. Good luck 👍🏼

    So I've been thinking about this for a while. Do you think I could douse the block with an aerosol can of gun oil to stop the flash rust?

      It should work. I like the Lucas gun oil, but the Remington stuff should work fine.

      They are good motors that get overlooked too much!
