That solo always sounded totally George to me. Quirky bending, pentatonic but with some detours, really concise and easy to whistle. McCartney is usually more flashy.
the solo always sounds strange to me, like it was recorded on a small amp and with low volume but just cranked up on the mixing board and just laid down over the track without much thought, still sounds amazing though

George kept a short scale Burns bass around just for laughs but The Beatles also acquired a cache of gear from Fender that included a Bass VI. I’ve read various accounts in were John used that axe on this song.
Phil Vaclavik George played bass on 7 Beatles songs he was actually quite a good bassist. He plays on She said She said off revolver then Hey Jude ,Old brown shoe and then Maxwells silver hammer,Oh Darling, Golden slumber sand carry that weight off Abbey road. John on the other hand was an awful bass player compared to Paul and George. His playing was normally very hectic and out of time (like on Helter Skelter but it fits with the hectic sound of the song) he plays on Helter Skelter, Let it be and the long and winding road. His playing on the long and winding road was apparently so bad that journalists have called it 'near sabotage' Phil Spector put the orchestra and choir on the song to try cover up Johns playing which made Paul furious because he wanted too erase johns bass track and record it himself

So first of all, an excellent cover! The tones are perfect, and the recreation of even the feedback was great. You even included the "mystery riff" at 1:51 which I was really happy about. However, I do have one small critique. In the repeat of the intro riff, at 1:46, after listening to the isolated guitar track, I do believe Paul is plucking the open g string along with the two top strings. It's barely noticible in the full mix, but it is nonetheless there.
Remember my father as promised driving me to store to buy it and sitting on floor listening to it all one Saturday morning all those years ago. By the way you were fantastic!
For the solo at 1:40, after the 15th fret bendy lick, I hear Paul sliding down into the E string D for the second lick, and then sliding down to the B string G for the last lick. I don't think he plays it the way a normal guitarist would. But I might be wrong.
Your descriptions are the stuff of legends. I've used the info on numerous covers that I've attempted (not this one as I do vocals too and can't even remotely do what Paul does here) and appreciate your work so much.

Ok, I'm crapping you negative, this has been one of my favorite Beatle songs from the beginning, and when I play it on a stereo, I put it on 11. Now... Someone PLEASE, WONT YOU PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME? I'm certain I've read or listened to every interview or write ups in english about Helter Skelter that I could get my sweaty girl fan hands on. I think I know... that Paul and George played the guitars, that John played an incredibly fierce and awesome Bass line, and overdubbed some.... um Avante punk saxaphone. I know that Ringo kept that beat, rock hard steady, in the pocket, like Mae West had just told him to "come up and see me sometime" (The Ringo Schwing, I mean swing) ...thru several takes of the Skelter. One of the takes 2that clocked in at 27 minutes or probably 7 minutes longer than any of the Stadium tour concerts they played between 64' and 66'. I know one of the engineers at the session was suspicious or rather convinced "they were all on something that night". His main testimony that once while looking on from the control room, he saw George Harrison running around the studio with a flaming ashtray on his head. I'm also aware how the inspiration for the song came from Paul reading an interview of Pete Townshend talking about the "loudest, dirtiest, raunchiest" song that, that other Mod podge group from the Mount Olympus of Rock had or were recording. Around the time. So after that ridiculously long set up for the question I need help with, here it goes; if the wonderful creator and player in this video, or if Sir Paul Ramon is browsing this comment section, I was wondering who, tweenst Carl and Macca took those 2 links or mini solo and answering phrase on the guitar. Possibly one took the first and the other took the 2nd. Studying and playing gitfiddle myself, and convinced I can usually pick out the lead guitarist on a Beatle track by the tone, phrasing and style of the solo, riffs and links, oh my. My guess, my extremely toned and flat "gut" feeling is that both are played by Handsome Harry, though both are distinct and unique from the other. The first lick sounds almost early-mid period rockabilly which I would credit to Gorgeous George. On the other hand theirs a weirdness to it (meant as a compliment) that I tend to credit to Paul, so honestly I'm miffed. The second phrase played in a very fluid blues rock style still contemporary these days also sounds like the playing of his Georgeness circa 67' to "Brainwashed" his overlooked and brilliant swansong, an album that maybe even more relevant these days than the day it was released. Don't say solo George and the Wilburys didn't warn us about where we were headed and why. The quick and beautiful bends and killer preciseness and tone of every note sounds again like pure Smokey Harrison. Nothing I said is meant as a slight against Paul and his guitar playing. On early Beatle tracks when Paul stepped in for lead guitar duty or as a 3rd guitarist to add licks, (ex: Ticket to Ride and "For i Have got- Another girl) it is easy to assume that it's George) Eric Idle once remarked when discussing George in his Pythonic style called his mate George, "The Best guitarist in.... ....the Beatles" which Paul and John agreed with unashamedly. That being said, in recognition of Paul and his lead style and technique from Revolver on, was clearly the Jimi Hendrix of the Beatles. EX: "Taxman" solo, the "Good Morning Good Morning" solo and fills and his truly gorgeous and psychedelic blues rock guitar throughout the song. Paul demonstrating a fine control of using feedback in a melodic, atmospheric way reminiscent of Jimiesque technique and feel. Unsurprisingly, Paul's favorite guitarist. In "The end" the song where first Paul, then George, then John, trade licks for 2 bars each 3 times in a one take Beatle guitar duel. Each performance perfectly displaying and capturing the perfect examples of each of their unique styles and prowess. Paul's funky playing, George's crisp, pure, Gerogeous soaring bends and picking and Johnny Guitar's dirty, truly grungy, sound of combat attack on his Casino. Appy polly woogies for getting carried away here. So simply, are their any players in this comment section that may know for certain which guitar bits Paulie or Georgie played in Helter Skelter? Bonus points for anyone who can tell me who played the screaming glissando guitar. Thank you for indulging me. And Yes of course I watched this video 3x in a row and yes the way he interprets and plays the parts do suggest that George was the primary lead. I would just like to confirm that his example likely reflects the correct parts and player. I know it seems quite clear after watching the video, but I discoved lojg ago that at times they could really surprise you in how they recorded, changed roles or instruments as if they were chameleons, without it being obvious to the listener. I still can't believe how long it took me to figure out that both John and George take full solos in "Long Tall Sally".. and really I didn't hear it and figure it out, I only understood after watching them in live performances of the song.
"New" evidence points out to Paul as bass player on his Jazz Bass. It makes sense since there's footage of him singin and playing that riff on his Martin D-28, I strongly believe it is Paul who overdubbed onto the final mix with his Casino the riff from the chorus, cause on the isolated track you can hear that the last E stroke goes high in pitch and goes back, as if it was done with a Bigsby, and Paul's Epiphone Casino had a Bigsby. The tone of the solo on the original song sound very much like a humbucker on a Les Paul or SG, very dark and muddy. I do believe it is George on his SG with Maestro Vibrola, because again on the isolated track at the end of the first solo there's a fast vibrato effect. Yes, could've been done with the fingers, but it sound a lot like a vibrato tailpiece. The rhythm guitar sounds "kind of" sloppy, and the intro riff sounds like John's work on Revolution (single version). So yeah, I think it is John on his casino doing the rhythm part
@Apo458 Wow. Excellent, thank you for responding to my very Novella length comment, points, and question. I re-read my comment, and it made me vow to recheck and edit every comment I ever make again on here. I appreciate the patience and interpretive skills it must have taken to get through my sloppy speculations. Thank you for your perspectives and research.
Wow! Look who's back and look who's growing up! Damn, man, you're getting so old! First off, Happy Thanksgiving! It's good to have you back :) Secondly, *this* video right here is why Matty is my favorite YT channel. Awesome job, dude! Nobody, but nobody puts as much effort into analyzing and replicating The Beatles' sound. The boys at Ably House...they're good! They come close...real close...but they don't always get it this "right." Nobody does it like Matty! Finally, it's funny - I never really thought of this as a "Paul song," but I guess it is. He was much more of a rocker than I think we give him credit for.
I always wondered how the struming of the rythm guitar here goes. Now is clearer to me. As always, great video, great tone and great playing. Keep it going, and happy thanksgiving!
Brilliant, even more so than usual. I'm madly curious now- Do you know if it was Paul playing the short guitar solo and other lead bits that you were doing on the (Surf?)Green Telecaster(awesome playing and tone by the way)? It kind of has a 'Paul' ring to it.
If anyone is wondering who actually did the lead to this i actually spoke to Dhani on one of his small tours and he completely told me about how his father had taken Paul's slower earlier takes of the song and would play the notes out on a acoustic and had the lead felt out after after a few takes, and the middle riffs were actually added later in the many takes Paul wanted (almost as bad as Obladi Oblada takes) and just simply kept... Actually Dhani said there are 1 bass, a lead, and a low tone Rhythm that feeds with the bass! I keep in touch with him every so often if he responds back and its a treat when he can, or if he's playing by some sheer luck! This was the classic George was running around holding the ashtray on fire above his head lol

MAGnificent job!!!
Wow! Look who's back and look who's growing up! Damn, man, you're getting so old! First off, Happy Thanksgiving! It's good to have you back :)
Secondly, *this* video right here is why Matty is my favorite YT channel.
Thank you very much, and Happy Thanksgiving! Paul likes to play "Helter Skelter" during his encores; he definitely knows how to rock!
Ably House finally does it right and more and is probably as good as Mattiboo.

Great job! Amazing as always!
I always wondered how the struming of the rythm guitar here goes. Now is clearer to me.
As always, great video, great tone and great playing. Keep it going, and happy thanksgiving!
Best guitar cover of this song on RUclips...
Great work mate!
Great job (as always) and you added an excellent analysis in the comments section.
Nice to have you back man! Great job
Rock on my buddy. Glad to see you posting
YES IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS
Loved the lead. Simple but highly effective
Brilliant, even more so than usual.
I'm madly curious now-
Do you know if it was Paul playing the short guitar solo and other lead bits that you were doing on the (Surf?)Green Telecaster(awesome playing and tone by the way)? It kind of has a 'Paul' ring to it.
It is documented in the various Beatles studio session books that Paul added the lead guitar to "Helter Skelter". It certainly sounds like him!
excellent take! that removed any questions I may have had about this piece, thank you.
Thank you for this, happy Thanks Giving
Excellent! Your cover is amazing.
Nice! Love that ferocious tone.
Hell yeah! The man is back
Nice to hear about another post from your channel Mattiboo and waiting for "Pepper tone" pedal releasing soon. Cheers!
