its because this is sharla's host family and in a host family, theres usually a host MOM a host DAD and host siblings. Thats why sharla calls her her host okaasan
When they were speaking in the other dialect it sounded like a COMPLETELY different language. It's so crazy how even in different languages dialect can completely just alter the entire thing to...basically a different language! CRAZY!
She did recognize the similarities, people who speak 2 dialects of a language (esp if one is the standard) will pick up faster most of the time. It's even harder in places like the Philippines or Indonesia where there are dialects and multiple entire languages yet everyone looks the same lol
I agree; I speak three Philippine dialects and the words are completely different amongst each. Anyway, that conversation sounded so cute. I wonder what t hey were saying to each other. Back home, we have a dialect that sounds so sweet and loving when spoken - even when the speaker is already cussing you and your family out! XD
What you're touching upon is the fact that often the word "dialect" is used to refer to separate but related languages. For instance, linguistically speaking Mandarin and Cantonese are separate languages, but politically they're referred to as "dialects" of chinese. In reality a dialect is a variety of a language that is understood by speakers of other dialects. For instance, American English and British English are two groups of English dialects, with many sub dialects contained within.
Heh American English and British English are different spelling/Grammar styles, the actual dialects of "English" are the supposed sub-dialects. For example whether you're speaking RP, Boston or NI dialect a glaswegian accent/dialect is gonna be hella hard to understand. Prefer an outback Alabama accent 100^ of the time. This coming from a Lutonion Hackney speaker, Jersey english sounds closer than Glaswegian.
Arabic has 23 Dialects between the countries, Most of them are completely different from classical Arabic which makes it super hard to understand people between the countries.
I'm Japanese. Even the same Japanese people may not understand the meaning of the dialect. Although it is rare that you do not know the meaning completely, the dialect of Akita introduced this time is particularly complicated, so there are many points that can not be understood from Japanese people as well. Not only in Akita but also in Okinawa and Kyushu area there are difficult dialects so foreigners may have trouble. Sorry for Google translation.
Akai Shuichi I'm half Japanese half British and even tho Scottish people are saying the exact same thing people from London (aka me) find it quite difficult to understand Scottish accents. So I'm guessing in Japan it would be the same thing Also different prefectures have different customs and traditions so the whole countries quite varied :)
well it's depend. I do speak normal Japanese, but when I heard my friend speaking in Tsugaru Dialect(It's one of the harderst dialect I guess..), I barely understood what he was saying at all.
You can. I went last year for the first time. All you have to do is write Japan on a jar and put a set amount inside per week. I started doing it again as soon as I got back (last January) and I'm at about 2,500 now. Going to Japan with my best friend made many of my lives best experiences and sparked real motivation for learning Japanese. Pursue your dreams, cover your room in what's important to you and take steps. "JUST DO IT!" - Shia Lebeouff
I love it when you speak Japanese. I'm so impressed at how knowledgable you are about the language. I was recently watching Food Ranger and he trips me out - this random white guy speaking fluent Mandarin in the middle of Cheng du. So cool! I have so much respect for people who can learn another language - I was even terrible at learning French in school!
Randomly came across your vids and subscribed. Thank you for posting videos like this. This is the reason I check out videos from everyday people. You just don't get intimate videos like this from big travel channel videos.
chiyokokai well i don't know. i was kinda expecting you to bring me a piece of answer :) if i had to take a wild guess i'd say the mic resonated with a certain frequency.
This is really fascinating. My music teacher is from Kansai and she's told me about how it sounds like a totally different language to Tokyo, but I didn't think it would be this extreme! And your homestay family is adorable! :3
I love this video so much!!! i think these kinds of videos can be a great resource to anyone studying languages/linguistics. dialect variation is so important! this is great i hope to see more kinds of videos like this in the future :)
this is an amazing video. I oooh'ed and ahhh'ed when okaasan and otousan began speaking together. the sound of the dialect is so distinctive. what a GREAT experience for you. thank you for sharing.
Wow! That was great !! That last bit with okaasan and otousan having a chat in akitaben was awesome! I understood only parts of it... geez I love hearing different kotoba from all over Japan. Thank you!!
Sharla, thanks for making this series on Tohoku! I was an exchange student at 東北大学 for a year and these videos bring back SO many memories. I hope to see more people visiting and getting to know the area! One of my favorite memories was going to all of the matsuri in the summer: Tanabata in Sendai, Kanto in Akita, Nebuta in Aomori, and Sansa Odori in Iwate.
I'm so inspired by you! すごい!I've been speaking Japanese since I was little and your Japanese is just as good! You make me realize that effort is what it takes you learn a new language even when you're older!
My first experience with learning and speaking Japanese was Osaka-Ben. It's always so fascinating to me hearing Akita-Ben, Hokkaido-Ben, etc. Such a beautiful language!
I have been loving these Tohoku videos! I'm moving to Sendai next year to teach English! So I'm super excited to visit all these amazing places! Thank you so much +SharlainJapan :D
That was super cool and I'm assuming that noice was wind creeping into the house. The flat I used to live in the UK used to whistle and my house now groans occasionally lol, it can sound quit creepy/funny.
Ahhhh😍😍😍😍 love these two😍😍😍.. so cute..you have had the most amazing opportunity to live like this..I've often dreamt of traveling to Japan but find it difficult as I'm disabled but I love watching your videos and experiencing things the way you do.. thank you 😘
I really enjoy seeing how much Sharla seems to be genuinely enjoying her time with this family and learning. It made me very happy to watch. I hope to see more like this!
Hey Sharla:) I'm really impressed that you did this. Nowadays you don't see many young people willingly wanting to learn and experience farming.I should know, because I was born and raised in big cities only and still need to find my green thumb. haha. But I love how you emphasize bonding with people and learning about something as essential as where our foods come from. The family looks so lovely also :) This is the kind of thing young people should see from Vloggers, not just city high life and fabulous sterile homes. Great work! Greetings from Germany!
I loved all the videos from homestay family ♥ They're so lovely! and... I think because I'm watching too much from your Japan trip, I've dreamed being there and I enjoyed it. (For sure, Japan is on my list)
OMG THAT NOISE when I went back and listened to it it sounded scary!!!! And the music after it made it scarier! LOL I'm going to assume it was just the camera making the noise.......
This was so interesting!! I've studied in Kansai so I understand Kansai dialect well, but Akita dialect is again completely different. At the end when they talked to each other in dialect... I didn't even grasp the meaning of what they said. But it sounded adorable :) Thanks for the video! :D
OMG what is this channel. I'm new here. A video that shows fluent Japanese and a home stay video!!! I thought Japanese people are shy on camera surprises but OMGGosh! Thank you for sharing!!! Say hi to your japanese homestay family :D:D
I'm so proud of myself I could finally read the hiragana! :') I've been studying Japanese for 3 months now and I'm so glad I've learned a lot already :D
This reminded me so much of when my friends tried to teach me Kansaiben... there are already so many different types, like Osaka-ben and Kyoto-ben and Nara-ben; must be the same with the people in Tohoku! Lol I am just learning body parts in Japanese so I was so proud that I knew most of them hahaha. Really nice video. It makes want to go to Japan even more.
I remember, I watched this video a long time ago, didn't understand almost anything , today I accidently stumbled upon it again and now I understand 80% of it.
No way! I stayed with them in 2012 when I was in Akita!! I've been trying to find them for years! I'm so glad to see that they're doing well!
Okaasan is a RUclips star now. Great video. The family is so welcoming.
she would technically be Oba-san (auntie/grandma) rather than Oka-san (mom)
SantomPh unless you're old enough to be her son/daughter.
+SantomPh おばさんisn't the same thing as おばあさん either!
She would be Oku-san (someone's wife) or Oba-san (mom
If the lady wants you call her Oka-san, do it.
its because this is sharla's host family and in a host family, theres usually a host MOM a host DAD and host siblings. Thats why sharla calls her her host okaasan
Okaasan is the coolest! She is great, you were lucky to have gotten to stay with such a nice host "mom" :D.
Me: *laughing* lol this so funny
Sharla: Wait did you hear that creepy sound?
Me: oh f*** I'm home alone
Aru Arakida yuppp 😣😣

they seem very kind and accommodating! it was nice of them to let you film and even teach you their dialect! :)
シャーらさんの人柄の良さがにじみ出ている回ですね。

i wish I could go Japan :(
Maveric Ellis same
Vickie Jimenez Very sad :(

richycline where in Japan did you go?
That was so interesting to watch and wow Sharla you are really good at understanding the dialect so fast.
I love it when you speak Japanese. I'm so impressed at how knowledgable you are about the language.

Lezley Davidson j
It's not like it's some amazing feat. I learned it in a year, and I'm amazing at it. She doesn't speak that well but she's okay.
アレクサンダ jeez dude😂 those are some real backhanded compliments😂
アレクサンダ talk about being full of yourself, and probably delusional too LOL
elixir no lie, her speaking isn’t great.
Aww, they seem like really lovely people. Looks like you had a lot of fun during your visit there.
That little old lady seems so sweet!
What a sweet woman, you struck lucky to have stayed in her home stay.
Just love them. They are so natural and welcoming like a favorite uncle and aunt.
Randomly came across your vids and subscribed. Thank you for posting videos like this. This is the reason I check out videos from everyday people. You just don't get intimate videos like this from big travel channel videos.
Yeah it's feedback from the mic XP mine makes the exact same noise XD
chiyokokai thanks for solving the mystery. :D I was really freaked out for a second.
how can she get feedback when she's only recording?
sugar glider mic is over sensitive?
chiyokokai
well i don't know. i was kinda expecting you to bring me a piece of answer :) if i had to take a wild guess i'd say the mic resonated with a certain frequency.
sugar glider that would require bullshitting from my part :P cuz i only know the basics
This is really fascinating. My music teacher is from Kansai and she's told me about how it sounds like a totally different language to Tokyo, but I didn't think it would be this extreme! And your homestay family is adorable! :3

You look absolutely stunning in those hot spring shots omg
omg, I'm watching your video with the lights out.. after you played that creepy noise I'm so freaked out now. T__T
I'm so proud of myself I could finally read the hiragana! :') I've been studying Japanese for 3 months now and I'm so glad I've learned a lot already :D
I loved this video! One of my favorites that you've done.
I am loving all your videos lately :)
Subscribed because you're Japanese is impressive and you're where I wanna be one day. Hope your inspiration rubs off. lol
Wow your Japanese is soo good , I've been in Tokyo for a year I can't speak half as good as you
you look like you're having so much fun. I want to go to Japan and speak it too 😣
This reminded me so much of when my friends tried to teach me Kansaiben... there are already so many different types, like Osaka-ben and Kyoto-ben and Nara-ben; must be the same with the people in Tohoku! I only got one right :D
And it was so cute when Okaa-san and Otou-san talked in Senbokushi-ben; though I barely understood anything!

And some of the phrases I actually recognized from some of the anime I've watched. Can't remember any names, but I know I've heard them before lol. Great video as always, Sharla!
