In order to birng them back there is a new species created that embodys the things we think are caracteristic of the originals, but we do not know for certain and the animals that wen't extinct don't have a natural habitat for them to live anymore.
@Systox25 Well, for one, the world can not afford the current population of all species. So, adding another one isn't exactly wise right now. Secondly, the world has significantly changed since the mammoths previously existed, so whether it'll survive in the new environment is still being considered. Also, why would we need to save what's already gone than what's already here? It's like SpaceX and NASA are so obsessed with reviving a DEAD PLANET (Mars), pouring billions, and yet the most perfect planet for every single species is being wrecked but still habitable. That money could be used to find alternative energy sources like nuclear fusion, dyson sphere, hydrogen...etc. Mars should be the last of our priorities.

The whole point is that the woolies are meant to terraform the tundras to turn them back into grasslands which could help repopulate more grazing species such as horses, bison, caribou, etc. This IS a sustainability effort. As well as a good way to advance genetic research. Plus, it's more of "make asian elephants that can survive cold conditions" rather than bringing back extinct species.
