    Tip for understanding the example in the video against the others in the problem set:
    Notice that the given ratio is "AB to AC" of 3:5. This means that the entire segment (A to C) is 5 units, of which AB (A to B) is just 3. So, that ratio can just be put into a ready fraction of 3/5.
    In the other problems, it might give the ratio as "AB to BC" of 2:3. You *can't* just turn this into a fraction of 2/3, because it's giving you two separate segments and not just a part of the whole: AB and *BC*; NOT AB to AC like in the first example.
    So, AB is 2 units, but BC is a separate 3 units. Add the two together, AB's 2 and BC's 3, and AC is 5 total units. So, the ratio you would use, AB to AC, is actually 2/5. You still have AB's 2 units, but the total of the segment is 5, so 2/5 is the ratio.
    Hope this helps, and please let me know if I messed something up.

      Thanks so much for this. I was so confused since I thought they meant the ratio ab:bc is 3:5 ie. ab being 3/8 of the entire segment instead of them having calculated it for us already

    We get answer as (7/8,2)....?

    I have a question about this video too. 2/3 of 10 is not a whole number, so is it the closest whole number that doesn’t exceed total length when summed? And, what happens to the 0.6 of a unit missing?

    • @iisRylie
      @iisRylie 4 года назад +1

      0.3 missing** got that flipped. Lol

    • @khanacademy
      @khanacademy  4 года назад +5

      In this case, we need 3/5 of -10, not 2/3 of 10. However, coordinates don't have to be whole numbers. We could enter the coordinates in whichever way best suited the number, whether that's an integer, a decimal, or a fraction.

    Ok so is the formula
    A. ( x1 + a/b (y1-x1) , x2 + a/b (y2-y1)
    Or
    B. X1 + a/b (x2-x1) , y2 + a/b (y2-y1)
    I’m really confused

    • @DenHenson
      @DenHenson 3 года назад

      B.
      essential what you are say is the distance between the 2 points (x2-x1), times the distance ratio (a/b), and how far away is this from our starting point (x1).

    Its confusing because in hear khan adds the distance to the co ordinates but in the bloody quiz he skips the addition and just do the displacement. Very misleading and confusing.
