@lamborghiniSPA1 I agree, Duesenbergs are just art on wheels! I was VERY happy that I was able to get footage of it starting up and in motion - not something you see very often!
Years ago, was at the Hershey PA car show. Had a 1911 Hudson Mile a minute speedster, and 1931 Pierce Arrow Dual Cowl Phaeton we were selling. A gentleman comes strutting in in his Duesenberg. All sexy and clean. Two morons were making there way around the car corral and the one guy would look at every car and tell his buddy what year Ford it was. Whether it was a Ford or not. So they get to the freshly parked Duesenberg and the guy's buddy made a comment about the pipes coming out the side of the body. The "everything's a Ford" guy stated, Oh they're fake, just for show and proceeds to grab one. Left the skin from his hand on the owner's pipe, and got himself a stay at Hershey medical center.PS: Would the owner of this one please get the carb worked on.
Many, probably most cars in museums never run, 10-20-30 years or more may have gone by since the cars last ran, they want to set their museum apart by saying the cars in this display are driven, it's a car guy thing.
Hopefully some talented people went go over the tuning of that engine, perhaps the smoke is from an over-rich condition, but you also hear it hesitate and misfire as soon as they start pulling away on the road as well, which is disappointing given the near-perfect appearance of the car. (just noticed as I was commenting that this video is 11 years old, I hope this car is still running!)
No. Blue smoke - burning oil. Black smoke - Air fuel ratio too rich, from too much choke. White smoke (steam) - coolant in combustion chamber/exhaust system. Driver could have given it less choke, which would have cleared the black smoke and smoothed out the idle. Signed, The Armchair Quarterback, with 20/20 hindsight.
i would agree with you if the transmissions were more refined. it's my understanding that they had straight-cut gears which made them noisy as hell. Packard's transmissions were much more sophisticated - they pioneered the machining of helical and spiral bevel gears which are much quieter. the Duesenberg brothers put all their research into a double overhead cam engine that was more than 50 years ahead of it's time. until the 1950s Packard engines, while manufactured like Swiss watches, were essentially an expanded version of your basic valve-in-block Briggs & Stratton lawn mower. smooth as can be, though. i've seen an owner balance a nickel on it's edge on the head of an idling straight-8.
I watch a video of Rat&Hot rod and I found one of this engine duesenberg 480 straight 8 6.9L twin turbocharged billet engine with 2000hp damn!! I will beleive that was impossible for 1929 engine but today if you have money you can do whatever you want!! 🤔
that's why the owners get "uninsured motorist coverage"... and for a multi-million dollar Duesenberg, the premiums are going to be pretty salty. however, if your pockets are deep enough to buy one of these in the first place, dropping a couple hundred thousand on another restoration is no big deal.
From the rear, I sounds like something you would hear at the drag strip.
Anyone going to talk about how perfectly that grass is cut?
That actually is a mean sounding idle, great car!! Extremely beautiful car, I love the design;) +1
That’s cause it was running rich.......

The smoke cleared out eventually. Maybe it needed to warm up a bit.
N bmmmmllm.¿£
The ultimate luxury hotrod.
incredible design !!
i really love Düsenberg !!
What's with the galloping and black smoke? Does he have the choke pulled out too far?
Wow look at that thing, some classic stuff!
I don't understand why it wouldn't be allowed in the auto museum if it wasn't driven 2 to 3 times a year.

Beautiful Car 👍
@DtRockstar1 yea especially when one revs... even more so a supercharged version!

It is! we just finished a full head replacement and it is back on display! it was a four year project. i’m so glad i was able to be a part of it
As it should be: Driven!
Why it smoke so hard? Is it normal?
No. Blue smoke - burning oil. Black smoke - Air fuel ratio too rich, from too much choke. White smoke (steam) - coolant in combustion chamber/exhaust system. A bit of oil smoke on start up and sounded rather rough. I sounded better as it warmed up and took off.
Now IT costs about a couple of millions, I guess :)
That car needs a ring job.
The American Rolls Royce

Uhmm? I know just a bit about vehicles and this one sounds as if it could use some attention. Sure hope I'm wrong though.
fuckin smoke-factory...
Invented by Germans! 🇩🇪🇩🇪 Düsenberg!
Niko Strohmann no buddy, it's 100% American
Leo Lopez No, the Duesenbergs are Born in Germany. They lived and founded this Company in the US, but they are German. Frederik and August Düsenberg.
Transmission sounded great. Engine sounded sick. Bad gas or too rich. Much money but no appreciation for this time piece.
this is not running correctly , a duesenberg should not smoke like that ....... O dear !
Kevin Osborne just running a hit rich
i bet the guy dose not know how to use a manual choke
Yes, but it does sound great .

@alexander1485 Yes sir!
thats the type of car your insurance wont cover. hit that your fucked.

did you change the cam on that ?
he forgot to open the choke after it was started.
I think these duesbergs are sooo elegant that's it's pathetic! One of the$better designs of automotive minds!
needs a serious tuneup.
The "great" sound...
with aluminium body
0:36 don't show this to Greta
HEMI V8 just sucks with a swallow. Compared to this sound, HEMI is a farting motor from a lawn mower.
fossils
not impressed - car needs motor work!!
