I think I've seen that bridge when I was kid my moms sister lived in RI. A lot of stuff went to the way side when Conrail was formed in April 1 of 1976. I could probably get you more information on that line along with the average car count, number of industries served that helped decide to abandon direct from the case study in 1974 / 1975. All I need to know is what division it fell under when Conrail took over.
I grew up in East Providence, born in ‘75, so you can imagine how this thing is one of my earliest memories when out and about. I’m slightly obsessed with it and have spent countless hours photographing the bridge from every angle. I recently left RI and got back into photography via DJI. I can’t wait to get back to RI for a visit. My first stop with the drone will be this spot. I was actually putting together a project similar to this, with the history and such, but my god this was amazing to watch. Seeing the bridge from all the different angles and aspects is amazing. Your video and editing are top notch. I’m so glad I came upon this video. It made my day. I subscribed, can’t wait to see more. Kudos!

You didn't include the reason for that scorched car frame you showed for a few seconds- it was a police cruiser. The college kids attacked it, the cop ran away, and they lit it on fire.
I can tell you: I can't remember when it was I want to guess the mid 90's. there was a massive underage party in the tunnel. they had a pro-sound-system, the noise DID enter into the near by houses. The cops came into the tunnel and they were surrounded by a 100 kids and left the tunnel. a cruiser was left behind and firebombed. That is when they sealed up both sides of the tunnel with a steal wall.
I walked through the tunnel in 1970 with my new girlfriend @ night!50 years ago. It was freaky. Bats & the sound of water dripping. Half way through, turned our flashlight off. Black? Lol kinda scary, but @ 15 you don’t have much fear. Came out the other side in a baseball field. Then had to go BACK again though it! Made some Big points with that gal. Dated for 10 years! Lol

In the late 70s we decided to walk thru the tunnel. Got about 1/4 the way thru and it was way to yucky and creepy for us. We left very quickly. I remember the riots very well. Loved living in Providence from 1972 to 1989. The East side is gorgeous area.
2003-2004 the bridge side was open, or at least unlocked. We had a few parties there back then, it was always the same day as the feast at fox point. That kept the police busy so they ignored us. As a photography student at the time I have a lot of great shots of the entrance back then.
Going inside that tunnel was surreal. The moment you go inside, you feel the temperature drop a good 20-30 degrees, and the darkness is overwhelming like you said. I brought tactical flashlights and really could not see much. I went in the middle of the summer and there was so much water on there, an entire plastic chair was upright completely underwater. I've seen other videos of people getting through to the other end, and those secret passages from houses, seem to only have been a rumor.
I've been through it also.....I used to live in fox point.......spot on about the drop in temperature..... and it had a weird kind smell too.......I walked through it with my father when I was around 11 or 12....
When I was a kid i remember the fire department having to hose down the bridge on hot days because the heat would expand it and it would be stuck in the down position.
I used to always take the bus from Rumford to Providence and those buses went through another tunnel that went under the big college hill. A few days after the blizzard of 78 me and one of the waitresses from my Dad's restaurant walked through that tunnel. Now that was cool.
I'm from RI and I never knew the history of this 🌉, I drive on 195 to and from work everyday, now I see it in a different way knowing the history... I wish they would fix it and make it better specially as a Bus rout but being from RI its NOT gonna happen ..... I appreciate it bro.
A bunch of friends and myself (in the early 80's) ventured into the tunnel from the North Main St./Steeple St. entrance. If you look closely at the green wall @1:49 you see a door above the white car. You can barely see the large lock right in the center of the cars hood. At the time it was only a plywood wall and door. The only thing in that tunnel was garbage, train track, storm drains. and man hole covers with one cover missing. a pall of in fell in with one leg. As at times there was 0% light and we only had 2 small disposable flashlights that was sold at the time at the checkout of most stores. There was a strange purple and sometime green fog in it also. It came out down from Gano St. We took the bus back.
Yes, it was in my line of vision every weekday during my high school years. I walked down Francis Street to downtown. We would walk under the farthest right tunnel under the railroad which was a bus stop for travelers leaving downtown for Smith Hill. I headed towards Dorrance Street and the bus stops on Westminster Street near the Arcade.
This reminds me of the Connecticut River Train Bridge on the old Airline Railroad going across the Connecticut River from Middletown to Portland. It used to swivel, but since the railroad has long been out of use, it's now just an abandoned relic, permanently open to ship traffic. Very cool!
I've driven through it many times in the '80s. 1952 Chevy truck, and a 1983 VW Rabbit. It was cool to drive west, park on the bridge over N Main street, have a beer at the Blue Point, and hear people say "What's that car doing up there". P.S. Don't forget the movie made in the 80's when a old car was hung from the top. Name of movie, and photos to follow...

Jason! As a native Rhode Islander who moved to the West Coast in 1987 I can recall seeing this upright from I-195 when we’d go to that megaplex cinema complex in Seekonk. You did an amazing job in this and the tunnel detail was fascinating lore I had no idea about. And what about those crazed RISD mobs! 😂 That was my favorite TIL moment for me from your very entertaining slice of history from the state I was born in and you gave it a positive spin with an obvious love of where you come from and that did not exist when I graduated high school in 1979 from Woonsocket HS. Not much appreciation of the fascinating history of the state and the localities. Thanks for loving where you are from, it’s really impressive.
that's so funny because when we did our Roger Williams cemetery explore on Thanksgiving, our plan was to go check out the tunnel but we ran out of time. We weren't even sure that it was even accessible but we wanted to check it out! Anyway, great video tour as always and wonderful history! :)
Great video. Sadly, it's (the bridge) a place where many lives have been lost from death by suicide. You could also accidently fall to your death due to its crumbling decaying wood and disrepair. It's very sad to see these historical icons of our past allowed to be laid to waste. I recently found out that many Irish Immigrants including my gr gr grandfather carved out and built the tunnel. Then they would go to St. Joseph's Church on Hope St. to build that after working on the tunnel. Still putting dates together but the opening in 1908 (shown in a shot) coincides with the late 1800 build of St. Joseph's. I wonder how long it took to build the tunnel ? Fantastic video and beautiful shots. Maybe a follow up exploring the creation of the tunnel and the folks who built it ? Happy Holidays to everyone, stay safe and healthy !
I've lived in RI most of my life and I never knew there was still a tunnel under the Eastside. I even lived off Gano, right near one of the exits and walked past on the street, never noticing it. I do know you can see the tracks clearly from the bike path but never ventured to follow them lol that's crazy that it's still under the city, just chilling. Kind of creepy lol

Can't believe I just discovered this channel! As kids in Providence, my friends and I were obsessed with so many of the places you explore! Love your research and your production quality. Top notch. I remember the "satan worshipper" hysteria that seemed to crop up in early 90's RI everytime kids found an outdoor spot to party.
Love the pictures of Crooks Point Bridge. If you look at the pipe going up the side of the bridge to the navigation lights up on top was a project that we did on that bridge in Spring of 2019. When I was up there hanging from the basket attached to a crane, the view was amazing. 150’ straight up. Thanks again for the memory.

This is my youth in this video. Played ball in Bryant Field north of the tracks and Engineers Field south of the tracks. I remember when they closed the Red Bridge and built the Henderson. In the winter, we had 'Hockey Pond' along River Dr.
Moved here in 2013 and that tunnel was at the end of our street (Amy St.) I've always wondered where that thing went, but was too lazy to look it up. Thank you for the info and inspiration...

Hey guys. So lm 36 now but w ed use to have parties down there years ago in high school and in our 20s. A good friend of ours climbed it and slipped and died. THAT CHAIN LINK SWING YOU MENTIONED THAT "SOMEONE HUNG AT THE TOP OF IT" he didn't just hang it up, he actually sat in the seing and swing back and forth!!! At another one of our parties!

I’ve heard some rumors about incorporating the bridge into a potential all new light-rail line for the surrounding area, as well as possibly converting the area to some sort of park. Of course, knowing the city it’ll most likely either be a)demolished, or b)not demolished due to budget constraints

My grandfather was the operator of that bridge, he actually was the last person to leave it in the upright position.

Love the pictures of Crooks Point Bridge. If you look at the pipe going up the side of the bridge to the navigation lights up on top was a project that we did on that bridge in Spring of 2019. When I was up there hanging from the basket attached to a crane, the view was amazing. 150’ straight up. Thanks again for the memory.

This is my youth in this video. Played ball in Bryant Field north of the tracks and Engineers Field south of the tracks. I remember when they closed the Red Bridge and built the Henderson. In the winter, we had 'Hockey Pond' along River Dr.

Hey guys. So lm 36 now but w ed use to have parties down there years ago in high school and in our 20s. A good friend of ours climbed it and slipped and died. THAT CHAIN LINK SWING YOU MENTIONED THAT "SOMEONE HUNG AT THE TOP OF IT" he didn't just hang it up, he actually sat in the seing and swing back and forth!!! At another one of our parties!

I grew up in Rumford. Born in 57. I remember going over the OLD Red Bridge before they built the more modern Washington Bridge.
Finally....someone called it the OLD Red Bridge!! Thanks.....hahahahahah!1 DD
This is awesome!!! I lived on Warren Avenue when I was a kid right off the Washington bridge. I remember always being intrigued by this train bridge. I was born in 1978 so I guess it was out of commission for a couple of years before I came along. Thank you very much for making this video!!!

Wow, another fantastic video! I’ve heard some rumors about incorporating the bridge into a potential all new light-rail line for the surrounding area, as well as possibly converting the area to some sort of park. Of course, knowing the city it’ll most likely either be a)demolished, or b)not demolished due to budget constraints

I climbed this bridge when I was still an ironworker and was building an addition on the Salvation Army building nearby. I even have a photo taken by a friend as proof.
