- The "This or That?" book tag: a new tag for People April and beyond from me and Elisabeth @bouquinsbooks
Use this tag to talk about what you like or dislike in nonfiction about people. Pick the prompts that appeal to you or allow you to enjoy being opinionated. Do mention books good and bad as you go along.
1) Big, fat and detailed biographies or short and succinct biographies?
2) Celebrity memoirs or average Joe memoirs?
3) Complete correspondence or selected letters?
4) Memoirs written when the events are fresh or memoirs written with hindsight?
5) Gossipy biographies or scholarly biographies?
6) Diaries of ordinary life or diaries of extraordinary events?
7) Arty memoirs or sporting memoirs?
8) Gritty autobiographical writing or inspirational autobiographical writing?
9) Biographies of historical figures or biographies of contemporary figures?
10) Memoirs of happy days or memoirs of tragic days?
Everyone interested in biography, memoirs, letters and diaries can consider themselves tagged. I'll tag some people I know are taking part in People April.

So much to think about - quite revealing when I was answering the questions in my head!
Yes I have realised tastes in biography and memoir vary enormously. And what I think I like and my real preferences vary too.
I should really read the Mitford letters. What a lot of lovely enthusing about memoirs. I feel I have not done enough for People April now! I have so many memoirs on my shelf. I agree with the ordinary person extraordinary events diary - and I immediately thought of A Woman in Berlin.
It's exactly the sort of book that works for me. She could write too.
This is delightful, Ros! Great questions and responses! I will definitely do this tag during People April. Thank you for creating this one.
I look forward to your version Pat. I know you will have lots to say.
Thank you so much for the tag Ros, I'll have to take a look at my previous and biographies and memoirs I've read and be sure to give this one a go!
Brilliant. I know you read different types of biography to me so your responses will be interesting.
That is exactly how i feel about humongous biographies. I heard about one on Pancho Villa and was really excited until I saw it was over 1000 pages long.
Glad it's not just me!
What a fun tag! I will do my best to get this done in the next couple weeks. I really enjoyed listening to your answers.
Thanks Anne. No pressure!
Goodness. I will need to think about these! I'll try to get to it before April is over though! Thank you for the TAG!
No pressure but your answers would be interesting.
Thanks for tagging me, Ros. You would have to pay me to read a fat biography like Red Comet too. 😂
And you are such a reader that makes me feel much better.
I just discovered your channel and the People April challenge. I loved hearing your answers to these questions and feel much the same as you do about memoirs and biographies. I’m not sure I will have time to participate this year but would love to if you do it again! 😊
Hi Jen. This is our second year and I'm pretty confident we will keep it going. Nice to now find your channel too.
The Moon's a Balloon and All the Empty Horses by David Niven were wonderful! I loved them both. My retroactive celebrity crush on him grew with each chapter.
His charisma shines through his writing doesn't it? And his humour.
I really enjoyed this. So much to think about!
It made me realise my preferences more clearly.
Fun tag. It gave me food for thought.
Good! I'll go and watch.
Thank you so much for your very kind words about Unspeakable! And what a great tag! I have pretty much living People April all year--and I'm very excited to do it a bit more officially now!
You are the queen of biographical reading I think.
@@scallydandlingaboutthebook2711 🤓🤣
Really enjoyed hearing your responses to this tag. I find myself very cautious about memoirs and biographies, for the most part. That being said, one of my favorites is a memoir entitled “A Girl Named Zippy” by Haven Kimmel about a young girl growing up in Indiana in an ex centric family. There is a sequel but it’s not as intriguing as this one.
Memoirs might be my favourite form of nonfiction but I choose with care as they can be dull. I'll look out for Kimmel.
Brilliant questions, they really had me thinking!!
I've had mountains of the mind on my shelves for absolutely years 🙈 interesting what you said about Rose Tremain - I saw her at an author event and felt she wasn't very likeable.. It put me off a bit too!!
And yet she is a wonderfully versatile novelist.
Love this Ros - thank you for tagging me! ❤
No worries for you about expressing some opinions 😉
@@scallydandlingaboutthebook2711 some may well be the same! 😂
No Red Comet for me either, even though I love Sylvia Plath. I don't need to know that much about anyone. Whiny memoir hazard...it's risky! Thanks for tagging me; this was a fun video and great tag idea.
I fear I wouldn't love her anymore after reading it. Sometimes a bit of mystery does no harm.
Hi Roz, thank you for tagging me. I have opinions! So I'll do this tag soon "Like is a Banquet" by Rosalind Russell was marvelous!.. Aloha friend.
Splendid. No pressure of course but you write memoir too so an interesting perspective 😀
This has convinced me to buy a copy of Mitford letters, I read Jessica's memoir of their childhood recently and I'm hooked. There is that looming element of Nazism in A Time Of Gifts that seems so out of place amongst the kind, happy people, singing and dancing in the pubs, I read it last year and it inspired me to go hiking in Germany myself!
You'll have a grand time with the letters I think. And you are right, the joy in Time of Gifts and the sequels are coloured by what was to come. It makes it even more precious. Where did you go in Germany?
@@scallydandlingaboutthebook2711 I ended up in Heidelberg and Freiburg im Breisgau because I wanted to see some castles, both are beautiful.
I enjoy celerity memoirs. I’m currently enjoying A Pocketful of Happiness by Richard E. Grant.
I can imagine his writing would be good though.
As long as they are well written, the chunkier the biography/memoir the better for me. All the Red Comets. I am just that nosy. 😅. But well-written being the operative term. Though I also love more focused biographies ala Square Haunting. I just love biographies. :)
You must habe more patience and perseverance than me. But of course being well written is key.
I will probably do this in May Sorry sweetie but it does look fun 😊
That's perfect. Means you can look back at April
I don’t like memoirs in which the author is whining all the time or is always blaming others for things that happen without giving any thought to their own deeds.so no self-reflection at all. Ik like my biographies short en to the point. Group biographies are also gret ( reading now The Dictionary People and enjoying it). Not really interested in celebrities memoir, but did enjoy Michelle Obama’s Becoming. I think that it all depends on how well written a book is.
It's true Alina, almost any subject or story can capture my interest if the writing is good enough. I can even just about tolerate a degree of moaning if the style and language is good enough. Dictionary People sounds excellent.
