Hey Matthew, your videos are a frigging gold mine for new DMs on how to change pre-fabbed adventures to make them even better! Loved your LMoP series (and using some advice from there for my own group) and looking forward to what you came up with for Stormwreck Isle!

What's wrong with Runara choosing not to engage the enemies? It just makes her a flawed character, like so many characters in fiction. Actually makes for a tense moment when her nature is revealed as the players can rightfully be angry at her for not engaging, leading to some interesting philosophical discussions regarding non-violence.

Oh dear -- and otherwise trusted -- advisor, you have momentarily fallen from the way. Ahem. True Grit is not a spaghetti western. I'm sure the Italian and Spanish countryside gave great good service and value in many so called westerns, some of the most famous western films probably, filmed there. But I can watch True Grit for the landscape alone... so beautifully filmed against the mountains and changing fall colours of the American west.

New sub and patron here, thank you for this video and the entire playlist. You have provided some super interesting ideas that I'll definitely be using in my upcoming campaign. This is my second campaign and my idea is to connect DoSI into Tyranny of Dragons by partially using some of your ideas here. I'm replacing most of the kobolds in the service of Sparkrender with cultists from the Cult of the Dragon to tie ToD into the plot.
One of my players characters is from the town of Greenest at the beginning of Hoard of the Dragon Queen, and I'm thinking he might find out about some of the cults plans to raid towns along the sword coast, including the one where his wife and three children are from... Should make for a really interesting start!

This smaller campaign could with a bit of homebrewing be bridged to the Phandelver campaign and that one to the Icespire Peak campaign. A trilogy in decent proximity to eachother. Strormwreck lvl 1-3 -> Phandelver lvl 1-5 Icespire Peak is lvl 1-6.. BUT say the party is lvl 5. Tweak it so they start IS.P at lvl 5 if they ended at that level, finishing Phandelver. Upscale IS.P etc so its really from lvl 5-10 ( or min 3, 4 if they finished Phandelver at that lvl ). Or it might be too easy.

I'm prepping this adventure for my home game someday and did a write-up of the lore-dump Matty did in this video. I've only changed minor things: I'm calling the island Dragonwreck Isle; and I've given the big dragons titles, coz in my headcanon dragons collect titles. I was thinking of renaming the star to the King Maker star, but left it as is.
"In ancient times there was an evil red dragon named Charoof, The Blazing Terror; Lord of the Searing Seas; the Endless Ember. Charoof terrorized the cities and villages all along the western coast. So great was this dragon that it took a team of metallic dragons working together to defeat her, and seal her beneath the ocean. But the heat from her underwater tomb formed a volcanic island called Dragonwreck Isle. This island emanated some kind of powerful draconic energy and it became like a beacon for dragons. Over the years numerous dragons migrated to Dragonwreck isle, metallic and chromatic alike, often ending in epic clashes above the island causing dramatic storms as dragonfire lit the sky.
In the most recent cycle of this conflict a blue dragon Cloudclaw, the Pale Thunder, was slain by the bronze dragon Astalegan, Shield of Belfar. Astalegan was gravely wounded in the battle and with the clarity that came from the wound he thought “Let this put an end to this cycle of destruction”. Astalegan committed himself to non-aggression and with the help of his protege, a human woman named Runara, founded a temple to Bahamut on the island called Dragon’s Rest. Runara took over the temple when Astalegan died, and interred his bones as a holy relic. She continued his teachings of non-aggression as the years went on and people came and went.
Three months ago Spark Render, a blue dragon wyrmling, came to the island with the aim of harnessing the draconic energies that permeate the island by performing a ritual at the crossing of the King Slayer star. Spark Render attacked Dragons Rest and stole Astalegan’s remains. After the attack Runara prays to Bahamut to send a protector to defend them from Spark Render, and not long ago the bronze dragon Lord Adron arrived shortly after. Runara tried to convince Lord Adron to follow Astalegan’s non-aggressive creed, but Lord Adron is a head-strong and arrogant dragon, and last night he decided to fight Spark Render to take back Astalegan’s remains."

Yeah, I definitely agree with the loot. What I am going to do to make things more fun for my players on this campaign is give them some decent loot especially through the Winged Kobolt and through helping the Myconids. I added 2 Harpys to the Shipwreck to make it harder because my team is pretty ruthless fighters and let's face it, they are making better rolls than me this campaign lol. I also find the Stirges really underwhelming to fight as well. I also feel that in Seagrove Caves they leave us with little context and not really many significant interactions. So I guess that's kind of a good thing due to the fact that it leaves me room for improv which is something I need to work on anyways. (this is my first attempt at running a campaign). However, I have a good feeling that the party will enjoy what I have prepared so far.

It's my first time DMing because I found this adventure for 5 dollars at target lol. And after reading the adventure, I definitely see why it's so cheap. This thing was booooorriiiing.
    I changed a LOT.
Firstly, I made Stormwreck Isle more of a vacation amusement park get away. The many kobolds running around make money by running a carnival style operation, and use that money to trade for things like clothes, tools, food etc. Lately, Stromrender has been harassing the area after the dragon game to try and stop him. He's been cruelly striking down on the carnival every few days and making it impossible for them to repair, and they're losing visitors fast.
The party heads here after getting crazy cheap tickets to the island. So I start the story on a cruise ship! I let the party get some time to settle into character and interact with the others that will be visiting the island, namely two troublemaking adventurers, an illusion wizard and another that seems to be a paladin. (He once was a paladin for bahamut, but lost his rite, and has since become a rogue, working with the wizard to steal treasure and make a living) They got into a pretty big squabble after the illusionist beat them in a few gambling games, and now the plan is to allow the party to compete with them in collecting treasure, and try to stop them from stealing from the carnival too. I also changed the zombies into undead that have been affected by stormrenders electricity, and they know are coral infested glowing zombies that instead of being hard to kill, must be separated after death or they will conjoin and create a zombie amalgam. Very excited for how it'll go! My second session is in a couple days.

Then Runara asked him to leave and he sulked and said he was going to go build a hut in the woods. Hey man, happy new year!
Got a quick question for you if you see this.
I'm a brand new DM just subbed to your Patreon. Love your work and all of the changes!!
I'm running this for my party on Saturday (first campaign and all new players too!). I've got all my prep done but just need to work out the redistribution of the loot. I remembered you mentioned it in this video (point 12) but you don't come back to it in any other videos. You also mention that a fun prize for the first skills challenge would be to roll a dice for a random item which sound like a great idea.
How would you go about redistributing the loot? Also, where could I find new items to put into something like a item prize list? Or items for Myla to find in her scavenges?
    Many thanks!

    • @heyitsMattyP
      @heyitsMattyP  9 месяцев назад +1

Agh! Now this is something I've clearly forgotten. Sorry!
What my plan was (now that you've reminded me), was to look at the loot that's in the finale dragon hoard and keep it as a list behind my DM screen. And during the sessions, if the players explored somewhere unexpected or did something rad, I'd add that loot to whatever situation or dungeon was coming up.
My reasoning is: all the stuff in the final treasure hoard is cool, but the players don't get a chance to use it! So I wanted to bring it forward and put it in the players' grubby hands.
      Does that help at all?

So I am wrapping up this adventure with my online campaign. I made changes, quite different to your suggestions in many ways.
    * I started the adventure with the group meeting OUTSIDE a tavern lol. I created a little encounter to get them together, something different than "you meet in a tavern" with all kinds of clumsy interaction. They are pressed into service by a local craftsman, who has had a focusing lens for the new telescope at Dragon's Rest. The lens is the last piece needed, and it ships out tomorrow, along with a group of Neverwinter VIPs, to see the approaching comet. It has been stolen by a group of kobolds, and they ran into a warehouse across the street from the tavern.
    * Runara is indeed a human, and a cleric. Came in handy when the group's cleric went down fighting the zombies on the beach. We have this one pretty much identical.
    * I removed the harpy. I added more undead to the Compass Rose. This worked really well.
    * I killed off all but two myconid sprouts. They were killed by the elementals. The group seemed to enjoy this part, as they have all seemed to taken on a heavily GOOD alignment.
    * In our last session, the group headed up to the observatory, which has been rebuilt after a couple of decades of storm damage and disrepair. No random encounters, though they know a brass dragon is on site, and they encounter several strange glass formations in the rocks on the approach. They are met with a sizeable force of kobolds, and during the negotiations, they are attacked. In the ensuing fight, the wizard decides to misty step across where the bridge would be, and finds a much larger group of kobolds than presented in the module. A quick casting of fog cloud kept him from being outright murdered.
In the next session, they will be confronted with Sparkrender, who has captured the brass dragon, and as per the written book, plans to sacrifice him in a ritual to gain the power of the dragons that have died on the island, by harnessing the power of the comet. it won't work but he doesn't know that. With no long rest between fights, the group will have to defeat Sparkrender with the resources they have. I plan on having him escape, and declaring vendetta against them. I hope to have him be a recurring and increasingly powerful foe. As it turns out, the glass/crystal structures are what is left of the workers who had been completing work on the telescope. They were killed by Sparkrender, after he captured the other dragon.
I also added a day of downtime between each adventure area so far. I wrote in a library at the temple, and the wizard especially has been poring over old scrolls and books. I have dropped adventure hooks into the mix, all going different directions, so the players can decide where they want to go. Two paths have have tentatively laid out in an outline involve traveling to an ancient dwarven ruin in the Kryptgaard Forest, which will eventually lead them extremely deep underground, tens of miles at least, probably more, than the Underdark. The inspiration is the old Hollow World setting. I will draw heavily on the Jules Verne classic, should they take that path. The other possibility is to have a ship wreck on the rocks before they are set to leave the island. Only one person survives, and he is from a far distant land, across the sea to the west. This will allow me to use the Svilland setting, without really upending things too much.

Love some of the ideas present in this video. Chief among them being that Runara isnt a dragon. There's something very annoying about having a pacifist adult dragon present on the island while you run around at level 1 solving the whole issue.
An idea i had was to make Sparkrender have a distinct Necromancer vibe. He would be responsible for the Zombies at the beginning and the night time random encounters would feature undead heavily. Im planning on running this at a higher level for a Saltmarsh campaign, so Sparkrender could have some actual Necromancer spells without wiping the party (Cause Fear, Ray of Sickness)

I'm excited for your other videos because it's sparking some ideas of my own and I was finding the story as it is originally a bit dull

You've picked the right adventure! This is perfect for a first campaign: short, few locations, few characters, low lethality, and space to add homebrew. Your friends are gonna love it :)

I am pretty new to dming and about to complete our first campaign mines of phandelver (wish I'd seen your videos about it before starting to play!). I would like to attempt this with the same players next and have a go at making new characters. As this adventure only goes to level 3, would it make sense to combine it with the dragon of icespire peak module that goes to level 5? I feel we would like to get some experience of playing with higher level characters and levelling up associated with it. Any suggestions on how to go about it? Might be an idea for the next set of videos...

Will keep an eye on these and start prepping a DOSI campaign for when LMOP (round 2) finishes up.

This is fortuitous! My sons are going to be home in December for the holiday and I was thinking this would be perfect as a short adventure that we could start and finish all in the time we are together. Looking forward to hearing about your suggestions in more detail. Your series probably won't be finished before I run it, but I will be watching with interest.
I like the adventure overall, but was considering a bit of lore change myself. I really like Runara's vibe of wanting reconciliation between metallic and chromatic dragons and want to lean into this by offering a possible path of redemption for Sparkrender. One way is by creating a personal connection between Runara, Aidron and Sparky. I was thinking that, as written, Aidron is an apprentice of Runara's. At some point in the past, Sparkrender's wounded body is found and he is brought to the temple to be healed. Sparky ends up staying at the temple, but he and Aidron don't get along. I am imagining a bit of a James Potter and Severus Snape situation. Gryffindors are supposed to be noble and good while Slytherins are supposed to be bad and malicous, yet Potter ends up being the bully and snape becomes the hero. Same deal here, Aidron is the "good" dragon, but he thinks he is superior and harbors mistrust of chromatic dragons, so he treats Sparkrender badly. Basically fill it with YA fiction tropes. At some point things come to a head and they fight and that sends Sparky down his path. Haven't worked out his ultimate goal yet, but I don't want him to be a mustache twirling villain. Maybe there is an evil kobold who tricks him into doing the ritual. I am imagining in the end, the party will have a chance to talk him out of completing the ritual (or just kill him like a good group of murder hobos, that is fine too). If they talk him down, that could create a nice scene where Aidron comes in, accuses the group of secretly being in league with this "evil" dragon and maybe tries to complete the ritual himself in righteous anger, so he becomes the "big bad" in the end.
With regard to Runara, I would like to keep the dragon thing as it could be fun and dramatic reveal. It makes no sense why she wouldn't step in to do something, though. She is so powerful, she wouldn't need to kill Sparkrender, she could easily just subdue him. One way around it is to tie her to the temple. I imagine that killing the blue dragon ruined her and in penance, she basically imprisoned herself to the temple, dedicating the rest of her life to her ideals. In order to finally end the cycle of dragon on dragon violence, she created some magical construct that cancels out the island's beacon, making it so that dragons are not drawn to the place anymore. This is powered by her, though, so if she leaves the temple, that signal will be broadcast again and she will have to deal with much bigger problems than a blue wyrmling.

Hey Matt, thanks for the great content! Just wondering - I've got a completly new group of ~5 players for this module lined up. What should I do with them before I start the module, besides your prologue? Or rather what do I guve them before we meet and what do we do once we meet but before the module starts? Do I give them the rules section of this module to read? Do I ask them something to help them come up with their character?

    • @heyitsMattyP
      @heyitsMattyP  Год назад +1

      Cheers mate!
I would suggest you use the pregen characters, but just use the stars and numbers so the players can decide who their character is as a person.
If you set the players any reading homework, it will intimidate them, but it might be a good idea to send them a short D&D video (like Critical Role's D&D&Diesel video) just so they have some concept of what D&D actually is.
And if you're a new DM, you should have a go at running a mock combat by yourself before the players arrive, just so you can wrap your head around the rules. Combat is the only rules-intensive aspect of the game, so you should practise so it doesn't end up slowing down the game too much.
Other than that, I think you'll do great!

There's probably some things that happened between Runara and Eldenemir that made him special and made Runara choose pacifism against her nature and even somewhat against her religion or at least against the main interpretation metallic dragons and especially bronze dragons have of that religion.. Also the fight happened at the observatory if I remember correctly so maybe she doesn't want to go there because of what she did there and because of to whom she did it..
It probably doesn't help that Sparky is Eldenemir's grand son.
Sparkrender probably didn't announce that he was going to perform a ritual to become a god and as for Aidron, he basically just went there and assaulted Sparky against Runara's wishes, she probably knows that it would be quite unfair for her to intervene in their juvenile conflict, as for why she would send the party instead, I think there's some good explaination, first she was starting to get really worried, she probably just expected Sparky to just kick Aidron's butt and send him back to her with a few scars, but Aidron being gone for 5 days and a prisoner of Sparkrender (that she probably knew) must have made her suspicious..
ALso she's still a bronze dragon even if she tries to not be hateful towards chromatic dragons, she still have deeply ingrained biases and have not only been trained most of her life to see killing as the solution to everything but also as a bronze dragon, is naturally extremely violent towards evil..
My take is basically Eldenemir noticed that Runara was slightly more open minded than most bronze dragon and thought he could manipulate her to achieve his goal so he got close to her, maybe tried to befriend her or seduce her, but at some point something happened and she had to chose between a party of adventurer and Eldenemir, and because she's a bronze dragon ans loyal to bahamut she attacked and killed Eldenemir pretty much instinctively, not knowing that he was just trying to manipulate her.. she deeply regrets and have mixed feelings about helping good to vanquish evil to this day..
