A Dozen Years Of Hell: A Chicago Fire FC Retrospective

- The Chicago Fire are my team. And they've sucked for 12 years now. Perhaps this video was more theraputic for myself than I would have liked to admit.
I tried to include everything that's happened, and why it may have it have happened. This is all from my perspective.

i hate being a fan.
Ah the Chicago Fire. The Cleveland Browns of MLS
The Fire have a title though at least
No they are more like the bears or Vikings.
not quite they actually have a championship
Sacramento kings
Jets actually. Won a championship early on in team history before becoming an eternal garbage can
I remember going to the playoff game back in 2009 with my dad and seeing Blanco score and play the other team off the field all night.
Now I just look forward to our best player being traded every year.
Props for the work you put into this. As a Sounders fan Im spoiled. Hope it gets better for Chicago.
Thank. If I would be that kind of guy Sounders would be me side crush ;)
Has a UrinatingTree Legacy of Failure vibe to it but without the humor. Only pain.
Much love from an Orlando City supporter
There’s pain, and then there’s being a Fire fan.
I walked by Soldier Field on the way to a 10k this weekend and saw Fire signage up and just thought to myself “lol this team still exists”. Poor poor Chicago.
i walked by on Sunday with the same reaction lol
Chicago Fire has a beautiful history in American soccer.
Chicago Fire is one of the most traditional teams in the United States.
Chicago Fire was one of the most consistent MLS teams in the late 1990s and 2000s.
Unfortunately in the last decade many institutional errors have harmed the team. Peter Wilt is perhaps the only solution to the Chicago Fire problems.
I think 2003 Chicago was one of the best MLS teams that didn't win the MLS Cup.
MLS and Apple TV needs to sign Danny. This is a great script.
Awesome Content as always.
Lies again? Amazon Fire Cage Fighter
We need another Chicago Fire video Danny!! Things aren’t looking much better
I have to get it out of my heart knowing the Almeyda era was an illusion, every time you are in the last positions unless they suspended the Pro/Rel already would relegated multiple times and now brake your golden rule this season signing Ormeño
The fire just always find a way to disappoint
From Indianapolis and finally went to my first Chicago Fire game on July 9th... Unfortunately exactly what I expected! I hope it gets better for you guys!
Here in the UK, we have a chant when our team isn't doing well. We chant "we're f**king s**t".
As a fire fan we are shit but give us 2 more years we will get there
This and the CCL videos are definitely my favorite content from your channel. I would love to see you continue this. I know that the Fire are your team so you have a passion to do the research for the video but I would really love to see you do more stuff like this. For Example
1.NYCFC's struggle with getting a stadium with a follow up video when it finally happens.
2.The two different ways MLS teams are formed
Orlando City a la Minnesota United VS Atlanta United and LAFC
3.The worst team in MLS EVER AKA Cinninati's implosion from the best USL team to the worst MLS team
Nr 3 has already benn done.He did it a couple of months ago
@@martinottesen1053 yes but I mean't a standalone episode like he just did for the Fire. I think going through an in depth look at the player arrangement at the USL level and how that translated into MLS and how the FRONT and BACK office really messed up on signings and coaches
@@danielneilson3706 Oh ok. Then i totally agree, we need that
Cincinnati is now respectable
Finally! Somebody has put into plain words what I’ve been feeling as a Fire fan. Although I’ve only been a fan of the Fire (and MLS as a whole) since 2010, it’s so hard continuing to watch this team but here I am today wondering why they can’t win consistently 😂
I’m a relatively new dedicated Fire fan, and I guess I’m still very naive, but each season so far (starting from 2016ish) I’ve been cautiously optimistic so I get what you’re saying. My dad watched the Fire from the beginning and is very much heartbroken as to where the Fire is right now. So much so that he stopped caring and that sucks for me because my little brother is starting to like soccer and my dad is reluctant to go to Fire games because of his displeasure with them
As a Red Bulls fan, I understand the decades-long misery. It’s very different, however, since we have our playoff streak since 2010 but it’s a misery defined by fielding mostly good teams that mostly make the playoffs, but get so close to glory every year with nothing to show for it. I don’t know what it’s like to be at the bottom so consistently and it must be hell like you say. I just find it fascinating how both consistently poor form and consistently good form can both produce heartbreak. And even though you guys missed the playoffs in 2013, that Supporters’ Shield winning game for us was so glorious and one of the happiest moments of my life, so I think with an MLS Cup (albeit in the 90s) you guys can hold that over us.
Also I know what that feeling is like staying in your seat after a painful playoff loss, not wanting to leave, running everything over in your head, knowing you’ll have to wait until March next year. It’s such a feeling of defeat and helplessness.
Also shoutout to a Fire player you didn’t mention, Joel Lindpere, Red Bulls legend.
Anyway, beautiful video recapping a not so beautiful history. Your effort in these videos is nothing short of incredible.
Red Bulls 2010s in another team I'm fascinated by. Someday I'll talk about them
You have a possible Open Cup to look forward to!
@@samclick9656 hopefully 🤞🤞
Man I remember 2017 and it was great. Niko was definitely one of my favorite players since
Oh shit, I didn't peep this was 1 hour
Good work my guy
As always, great job Danny. Really enjoyed this glimpse into MLS history.
Lies again? Black Soot
Damn this is the first time in a while I could sit through a full 1 hour RUclips video. Felt like a professional documentary
Mann I thought I had it bad with all the bad LA Galaxy signings as of late. Jesus, I hope we aren’t going down this path, sorry for your suffering.
Those puma kits were gold
Excellent video, I knew Chicago was bad and has been bad but I forgot about a lot of the stuff that happened in that time. When you compile it all together as you did.... it is bleak
I feel like if you take all the players the let go or traded in the last 3-4 years and put them into a team today, they would be a top team in MLS.
This is such a good video. I’m no Fire fan, but enjoyed seeing your perspective, I can relate to the pain being a Dynamo fan.
Also I am surprised you didn’t talk about Marco Pappa at all, he was so good for the fire, and kinda led the team towards the improvement in 2011-2012.
It's upmost painful to watch the chicago fire just do horrible, and it's shattered every chicago fire fans heart. There has to be a wake up call, just one day..
Haha love that you slipped the Crew badge in there 47:50
My friends and KC native Diego Gutierrez and Josh Wolff, will always be my favorite #Fire #Wizards alumni >
As a Union fan, definitely been there before. Eventually SOMETHING has to work, right? It's not like Mansueto isn't trying, if Chicago had the results he'd be one of the best owners in the league.
I will also say Kacper being poor was very predictable. He was invisible for much of the tail end of 2021, there's a reason we didn't renew him and instead got Carranza and Uhre.
I think all union fans knew he was shit he just got goals because we had so much service to him
I mean he was actually pretty clinical that first season but he definitely was just on a streak of form that faded out
@@liammclaughlin1612 yeah the first season when he got 18 goals he was class but the other two seasons he didn't look on the level that the other guys were on
Crew fan here, I sincerely hope that the Chicago FO wakes up or gets replaced for everyone's sake.
I know how you feel I'm a Chicago fire fc fan I supported that team since 2011
This is how I feel as a fire fan
Moved to Chicago in 2012 and became a Fire fan. This video has done a great job encapsulating my experience over the past decade.
This is truly the saddest team in the MLS where despite multiple wooden spoons, the league’s meddling nor the club can’t turn it around.
Great video!
The fact that the king and mariners made the playoffs
Incredible documentary, interrsting to see what's been happening to the Dumpster Fi- uh, Chicago Fire from a fan's perspective. I dont know how youre going to convince the FO but the Fire HAVE to go back to wearing red with the white/blue hoop (and get that old legendary badge back too!)
Me as a San Jose watching this with the exact same energy😭😭
This is what we needed!
it's super sad to see all the mls teams that were awesome in early mls suck now and get replaced by these new ambitious clubs
Danny . Your team needs to return to playing in red . Team colours are so important to a club .
I been in the same boat with you man I started supporting the fire since I was a kid going to soldier field when we had Novak, Josh wolf, Razov, etc. My favorite match tho that has a special place in my heart was November 14th 2009 when we lost vs Real salt lake in penalties on the conference final! Best game I ever went to and atmosphere i experienced. Im lucky enough to experience that day with my best friend miguel laureano who now rests in peace, we was the biggest fans of the fire growing up supporting our city when we didn't have alot of support. I haven't experienced the same magic we once had in the good old days of 2009.i hope the Fire finds the ENTHUSIASM AND MAGIC WE ONCE HAD
51:40 yes agreed the rest of the teams passed us by, while we still shoot ourselves in the foot again and again. Empty seats at Soldier or bottom sinking ship of the East again might be a clue? Depressing and embarrassing for a club that has so much potential... wasted.
Like the saying goes, "you can always change your wife but never change your club" Stay strong Danny
I think you may deserve to be worshipped. You nailed it on so many levels. Thanks many times over for this doozie of a video.
Man, appreciate the MLS content. That you made the Fire interesting, speaks to your skills💀 Jokes aside, hope to see full houses and success in Chicago. Good luck in '23!
I can remember that in 2013 although the Fire didn’t make the playoffs, Mike Magee was runner up for the golden boot! So, I can kinda see why they crowned him MVP.
The first MLS game I ever saw was MLS Cup 2000. So in the back of my mind I always think of the Fire as one of the great MLS teams. I just wish they kept the old uniforms.
I was at the game against the crew. Probably one of the most heartbreaking moments of my life
I like how this video is recommended to me after I've chosen to support chicago fire after I've been looking for an mls team to support until my team comes up from usl🤣
It sucks but i feel your pain. Vamos Chicago
Wasn't going to watch the whole thing when I saw 56 min, but watched the whole thing. Worth it. Watched is shaking my head and agreeing with it the whole time. As a Fire fan, if they ever got good again, I'm not sure any of us would actually know what to do; we are so used to complaining for so long. (That said, as a Cubs fan, you'd think I'd just think it would be the same as the year they won the World Series, but this feels different.)
Not even looking for a championship next year; just looking for consistent wins and a reason for people to want to watch them.
Of course, with games being on AppleTV only next year, you'll never get new fans, but that's a different argument.
Awesome video man!
As an earthquakes supporter I absolutely feel your pain. Hopefully our teams can make some changes in the near future become competitive again.
I could make a video just as long about the Quakes. We're in this together
I did not want to re-live all this, but here we are.
Year 13! Everybody give it up for year 13!
This video hurts so good 🥲 From one disappointed Fire fan to another, thank you!
Clearly a labour of love (and pain).
I've been waiting an over 30 minute video of football/soccer and it really worth it. Good video Danny. Well done and yeah it sucks to be a fan.
Great video! As an LAFC fan im still learning new things about the league. So videos like these are great. I hope Chicago continues to trend upward!
Man, what a fantastic video you got here. I can’t imagine how much time you put into it. Thank you for your work on this, as I’m sure it was an exceptionally frustrating thing to pour your free time into.
I’m scared to finish this video it hurts
Dont worry, as a Houston dynamo fan i also experience alot of the same type of pain
You nailed. I've been a STH since '98. 1sr 12 years great. Next 13 years - only one really good team. 2 Wooden Spoons & working on a 3rd. They have been so many points lost in the last 5 minutes during this era to drive me crazy. I look forward to each game, but leave grossly disappointed by how they play the game, on top of the outcome.
Thanks for putting in words what I’ve been feeling all along! Ugh
I remember that playoffs leg game in 2007 DC vs Chicago, they eliminated us at RFK, Chicago was ANNOYING to play against. Till this day I still don't get how Chicago hasn't had success since then.
The Fire always had a lot of success against DC in the 2000s. Kind of like how the Revs always seemed to have the Fire's number in that same era
@@dannytradio What's worse is that NE took out both teams in the Conference Finals, D.C in 2006 and you guys 2007. Maybe a four fall New England revolution video of how they choke in the Finals?
Hopefully with the money we get from Slonina transfer. We can help reinforce the squad and make a good run next year.
2 more years later the pain is still going
I unfortunately remember the Sanchez year, one of my first few years of bring a Fire fan...
Sticking either them though (hysterical crazy laugh).
It can't go on forever right?
Guys?
Please do a 2022 Fire retrospective as a followup, Fire fans aren’t sure where to go into the next year now that Mansueto has indicated that Heitz ain’t leaving yet
Are we all just not commenting on the bunny suit?
i was so confused when he suddenly just had that on
I forgot all about Shaun Maloney, LOL. He’s certainly up there with Innocent Emeghara as one of the most bizarre DP busts in MLS history.
I hope things turn up for the Fire soon. Y’all deserve better.
Video of the year.
Love this video! would also love to see you do shorter videos for others teams’ fall from grace, like galaxy, dc united, etc.
Next year: The Fire get dunked on by, and then go on to see STL CITY SC somehow win the MLS Cup!!!!!
What a video Danny Awesome.
Fantastic work.
Thank you. I need a new bottle of Malört now.
I wanted so badly to get the video of the Beric announcement with the Malort, but for whatever reason, rendering in Twitter videos come out extremely blurry. Pretty disappointed that I had to cut that out. Thank you for watching!
🍿🍿pulling out the bag of popcorn for this🔥
Good video I remember the good old fire days with cuahtemoc hope you guys can regain your status
I hope the Fire experiences what the Dynamo has. It's not been a dozen years bad level but 8 years is also bad. If the fire had a decent owner like we did with Segal and had a GM like Pat for us that was willing to bring in big players like Pat did with Herrera then I believe the Fire would be way more competitive. The last game (insane one by the way) he made an instant impact which makes me think we MAY sneak into the playoffs and I can't wait for what's to come but I've always liked Chicago and hope things turn around soon, they deserve better.
I love what the Dynamo are doing and I'm excited for what the future holds for their fans
They responded today. Convincing 2-0 win vs Toronto.
I feel like it will take an absolute 180 to bring Chicago Fire back to the spotlight. When I started watching MLS in 2014 I got a jersey of theirs when I visited the Navy Pier. I like the team but I can't help but feel bad with the fact that they have almost nothing going for them. They resemble what many refer to a poverty club
I was there on July 9th... Im so numb i can't feel anymore 😭
2024- last place again. currently 15 in Eastern
Great video Danny 👍
Definitely another one of my favourite videos if yours! Learned a lot about what it really means to be a Fire fan. In my lifetime of following the MLS, never seen Chicago Fire as a successful MLS team, which is sad because they definitely have a history. I've always liked them (TFC fan tho lol) and they looked promising earlier this season with their shutouts, but it just fell back into typical Fire fashion. Really hoping they can turn it around soon...
Man it’s been a rough 12 years and this is coming from a STH since 2011
Great video, that last line was cold
Great video man. Only note: Kacper Przybylko is the Union's 2nd all-time leading goal scorer, behind Sebastien Le Toux. #DOOP
Danny, verteidige das Feuer!
Hold on Jon Busch was good? As a relatively recent MLS fan, I only ever knew him as the guy who Obafemi Martins chipped from a crazy angle.
Jon Busch was the man! Now goalkeeper coach at Hibernian in Scotland
He was a solid goal keeper, but I only really watched him when he was in San Jose.
He thought we wouldn’t notice the bunny suit
I’m gonna cry while watching this video
Not going to lie, I went through depression with them.
great video essay, but there are many teams worldwide who have yet to have any success, and MLS would not be the same without Chi being bottom at this time of year 😁
As a Chicago native, I love my Chicago teams. I kept cheering on the Cubs a lot but I can't do it with the Fire. They are so bad. They have no direction and seem to just be going through the motion. I feel bad for the media team as they are good at their job promoting the Frie but it's hard to sell a team that is always bad because, unlike the Cubs and Bears,; you don't have a nice stadium, and history they do. The Fire is so irrelevant in the city you know it is bad when more people are going to Chicago Sky games than watching you. You are also in a stadium where you don't get naming rights and is of poor quality. I worry for this team man. I am a fan but not a super hardcore one. I tried becoming more interested in the Fire as I love watching the World Cup for the men but there is a reason I say I'm a Red Star fan and not a Fire fan. The Red stars, despite all of their choking, have done more to put a good product on the field.
Always love your content. This was really well produced, and your insight is always entertaining.
Unpopular opinion: It wasn't the Bridgeview location that drove away fans (because they came anyways) - not even a major contributing factor - but because there wasn't a winning product on the field.
People attend the Bears game not because of Soldier Field, which is smack dab in downtown, but because it's the Bears. They're an NFL icon. People love the Bulls and Blackhawks not because of the stadium is in city proper (in a not so sexy part of the city with almost zero night life (so any talk about "needing" a stadium in a "sexy" neighborhood is bunk just by that fact), but because each club successfully built a club culture that's relatively distinct. People want to be a part of that. People want to wear the Blackhawks and Bulls logo. It's Chicago as Chicago can be like Vito and Nick's pizza.
Create a winning product alongside a distinct club culture, and some consistency in uniform and logo and you'll get fans. If you build those things people will come.
I think we need a follow up to this video, as you probably know… the Fire have been killing it as of late 👀
Nevermind… this video is fine
Kacper is NOT the all time leading goalscorer for the Philadelphia Union. That would be Sebastian Le Toux.
great video. That haircut looks surprisingly good!
