Fantastic. Utterly brilliant. Between Armstrong’s translation and the Gerson editon I am thoroughly enjoying Plotinus. I like Plato a bit better, but both are so fun to read and very profound. Beats cable television!

When I hear the quotes of Plotinus in the video, cited by Mr. Grimes, I feel absolutely amazed. When he says that only one who has got that experience, understands what he says, I feel that he is saying exactly the truth because before listening to it I knew it by myself. I had that very experience a long time ago practicing the koans Zen. Today I am very grateful to see that Plotinus knew it earlier and (deeper?) than me. I can see that the experience is UNIVERSAL, and doesn't depend on believes or methods. It transcends differences of race, sex, culture, and religions (or absence of it). I am very grateful that I have seen this in the video. Thank you, Mr. Grimes, wherever you are.

Hola Miguel Angel.

@@MrJamesdryableI don't know about me but today I see many Plotinus around. Mr. Grimes is one of them. After watching his lecture I studied Pseudo Dionysius. Amazing! He did exactly as Mr. Grime says: he introduced (new) Platonism in the Catholic Church! All the mystics in Europe followed him. Even Saint Teresa of Avila was a new Platonic without knowing it. Mysticism comes from Plotinus. No doubt about that.

Great lecture a lot to think about. He said something that it seemed as though he was rejecting knowledge when seeking or becoming awareness of the one by transcending knowledge. That since it doesn’t come as intelectual knowledge, it may mean that it doesn’t come by the knowledge or likeness or the light or simply by the first emanation. But as he goes on, he basically says that it comes by it even though it transcends it when we become aware of the One. Because transcending is not however bypassing. Thus as we contemplate the first object of the One, beauty itself or the knowledge of the One, as we are engaged in it we forget ourselves as when in love and we don’t think that we are thinking or seeking while we are doing it, this makes one with the One at the same time, the end of knowledge is the One, and so there is rest. However this metaphysical explanation has to be more than just that, there has to be what in Christian teaching, demonstration in the moral world of what is true in the metaphysical, our hearts do not gaze enough the Beauty of the One just by abstract contemplation but it needs a fleshing out of it in our world, it had to become loving in the most suitable sense to our moral ugliness, which is of course shown at the cross.

  • @MarcosBetancort

He says that if we understand why we are doing something bad we can be freed from the need of doing it, yet what is it that makes us be ignorant of it? It cannot be lack of knowledge since that is the same question, what makes us be ignorant or have a lack of knowledge? And the only answer that stops the circle is evil or desire for what is wrong. but then someone can ask likewise, what is that which make us desire the wrong? And the answer is a lack of understanding! So both sin and ignorance are interwoven, they operate together. We know what is good but are deceived into believing that disregarding it for what seems greater (which is not) is more desirable. Deception does not happen by becoming ignorant of the good alone, since we know the good before deception, but by the rise of self-desire over the good as a greater good, the nature of the temptation was to move self-love higher than love to the Good by a false suggestion, which arose the subordinate desire. Thus we know what is good and yet we disregard it or
Ignore it, thus become ignorant, by desiring as greater good what is less good, which is sin. Thus the desiring of sin as good is making us ignorant. And the more we go on in this direction the more sinful and blind.

Wow, he got pretty irritable when he considered the possibility of “tangents”. Male thinking is “logos”, which categorizes, or basically puts things into boxes. Female “eros” thinking sees connections between things, which is a wonderful ability to have. I am guessing he has had some problems with Eros thinkers. I say, find the Golden Mean between limiting focus and entertaining possibilities.

This was prehistoric knowledge. This is what was taught in the mysteries and Plotinus let the uninitiated know this knowledge. Orpheus was the first to teach this, Pythagoras, Plato, Apollonius, Plotinus. All Platonists and neoplatonists were Pythagorians and at the base Of the philosophy Orphism. Orpheus and Pythagoras were the cornerstones or pillars to civilization both Hellenic and others. They were thefirst to teach all including the Indians. Arians were the Greeks, the children of Ares, as stated in the hymn to Ares by Homer.

Reality can best be described in terms logical operators, aka math. I deeply respect Plato and Plotinus, but there way too many arbitrary ex cathedra to explain ontological history of Reality.

@@pastry8281 thank you. In the last few months, I'm more acquainted with Pythagorean arithmetical theology (vis a vis inheritance by Plato et al). That said, I don't see sufficient ground for the *necessity* of metempsychosis nor the actual individuality of personal consciousness, other than perhaps a possible election by reality itself when playing out these lives, should it be one self-aware enough within a form. Even that conjecture may involve illogical aprioris. It's all a self-constructing temporal experience (illusion) by an intelligence produced as only an arbitrary consequence of a reality both defined by and made of informational sub-states whose value or "meaning" produced in relation to one another, and in this process becoming aware of its own existence. As such, there is no inherent apriori purpose per se, but rather the telos of reality will be the ever increasingly interpolated (hence intelligence as by-product) state of all disparate informational states. That said, the underlying expression of numerical infinity via wavelength may prove this inexhaustible or like a video game high score that goes through instances of infinite self-similarity, experiential dissipation/expansion, overall collecting more numbers in each cycle. Forever. Amen.
