The French Prince of Oranje died early without children, so his sister got the title. She was married to the House of Nassau. However, she also died without children, so Willhelm (Willam) now called himself "von Nassau-Oranje". He was born in Dillenburg, today Hessen. Later he had to flee the Netherlands and came back to his brother in this castle. Jan Rubens also had to flee to Cologne. There he met the wife of William of Orange. There was an affair with the wife of the Prince of Orange. Jan Rubens was arrested and taken to (Nassau) Siegen. There the painter Peter Paul Rubens was born. Jan Rubens was released and returned to Cologne. Jan died there. With the prince's wife, Anna of Saxony, it came to a bad end in alcohol and locked in castle. Maybe she was mentally ill. Died at age 33. However, William of (Nassau-) Oranje raised a small army (German soldiers) and moved back to the Netherlands. Siegen was exchanged for principality Luxemburg and went to Westphalia/Prussia. (today North Rhine-Westphalia) The rest of the Principality of Nassau-Dillenburg came to an end with Napoleon. The area around Siegen and Dillenburg is still Protestant today and many places are named after Oranien. However, William of Orange made history in the Netherlands. But he was murdered in Delft. The Netherlands were granted independence at the Treaty of Munster (and Osnabruck)
It is interesting when, as a German, I only want to research the history of the local prince and then realize that this was the history of Netherlands, Belgium and Luxemburg.
