I got home from school and went in the back door, the one that opened into the kitchen. Mom was there, as usual, washing out some pots and getting a few things started for dinner. She had a sandwich and chips on the table for me to have after school. Food was one of the ways she showed her love for us kids.
I hung up my coat, plopped into a chair at the table and began wolfing down the sandwich. And waited for it. I'd seen myself in the mirror at school. I knew most of my hair was almost gone and what was left was lopsided and gapped.
Mom asked, "How was your day at schoo......."
That was as far as she got. She'd turned to look in my direction and saw the tonsorial carnage.
"What happened to you?" she gasped.
I exclaimed proudly, "I got a girlfriend!" And I smiled.

I don't know why, but I feel like I have met my lifelong hairstylist. What I would have done in this situation is told them to stop and we would go to a salon together, in hopes they could learn a few things, and eventually, when they get better, I would be able to get a daily trim.

Or forced. I don’t see that hear. To me, at least, her movements seem natural, so natural that I forgot she was acting, wanted just to make sure this odd but charming girl was safe, mainly, emotionally safe. In other words, I wanted to relate or interact with the character, without even thinking about it. It’s the difference between an actor making me want to watch versus her embodying her character’s self so well that I feel as if I’m experiencing the moment. I don’t know where she learned this, or this is just natural talent, but this is art.
