@@JohnHenryEden2277I do, I always eat some kind of bread with pasta. Also with rice and also with potatoes. Bread is part of the meal, like if nothing else we have dried ryebread(I think its crisp bread in eng but sounds like something softer) to every meal here in Finland.
Good video! I myself live in Latvia. As far as I have seen and as far as I can remember, the Latvian army used alcohol tablets for heating food with a metal base until about two years ago. Have now switched to these water heating packs. "Kronis" is a Latvian food company - as far as I know, you can't buy their products intended for the army in the store, but you can buy the same packages with different contents. Bread? It is dark bread and almost everyone in Latvia uses it, but there are dozens of flavors and types - by the color of these two slices, they look like proper dark rye bread. In the previous MRE package, there were two packets of "Pūre" jam - strawberry and apricot - I don't know why they have been taken out now. There was also a small packet of honey - probably from the ''Vinnis'' producer. Yes - I am not surprised that there are 3 coffees and only one tea - in Latvia, people drink more coffee than tea. As far as I know, Latvia's MRE has one-meal packages and they are still looking for the best assortment of offers - so that I will not be surprised that after a year something from the existing ones will be taken out altogether and another product will be put inside. Maybe one day they will start making 24-hour MRE packs.
i was waiting for that video for 2 years now, cheers from Latvia) although you didn't enjoy everything you've tasted, we've got a completely different taste in food out here - roasted lentils are very healthy and we don't eat so much salt and artificial flavors out here, rye bread is like an everyday meal here with breakfast, lunch, dinner and even celebration party (we eat it with salted herring, alcohol, caviar and all kinds of stuff). The driedness of food is also different for us - it's a belief that "hard to stomach" food is much better for your digestion
Comment from a Latvian: -rye bread is sort of a cultural heritage over here. No table decking is imaginable without it. So it's quite logical to have it MRE, good as a snack in-between -wooden spoon is shit and gets buried in the sand first thing u open the package. Use your own metal spoon from your plate carrier pocket! -the sugar dose is overload in the MRE considering you get issued 3 pcs/day -u rarely get the time during meal break to drink both tea and coffee. Although u would prefer the instant coffee for the caffeine boost, but there's a saying: "Coffee in=coffee out"(code brown!). And since you not always have access to boiling water on a meal break, I like to make a 'frappuccino' in an almost empty plastic water bottle by poring 2 packs of coffee+1sugar and violently shake the bottle to get it foamy, works nice. -the main course is quite decent. Kronus is a civilian brand making canned soups, pickles, etc. There are 9 main options of which there are 2 vegetarian variants, so you get some variety, all are good. -you got the right impression about the lentils. But it's a fair snack to have something to chew on during down time and it's got a lot of fibers to help tie together running stomach if u might get one. some guys pour them into the main course packet, stir it and let them soak to add additional nutritional value, not a fan. -raisins, self explanatory, not a big deal. I like to win the lottery and get their alternative in some pack - dried cranberries, whole different taste. -the best thing about the non-flame heat pad: after you've heated up and finished your meal, you take the pad, seal its bag and squeeze it behind your plate carrier close to your chest/tummy. A game-changer in rainy, dark January end of day.
@@prieditis4179We make soup out of lentils, Lentil soup (Linssikeitto). Like its good with bread and some herbs, very light meal even if its filling. Edit: Like the rye bread goes well with soup. I think the lentils were containing the seasoning for the soup and thus the taste being so strong when you just ate em, cant see from this far but they should be pretty tasteless dry.
Usually everyone is too lazy to boil them so we just eat them as-is. Or give it to that "one guy" in unit that likes them. Interesting option is to mix them with small amount of water, add dark chocholate from MRE pack and raisins. As they don't have added salt, this goes together very well.
I imagine those lentils could be fine in hot water, that would make something like a porridge. Proteins, like you said.
