First record I bought, age 8 in early '65. From the getgo, hated it. Eight Days a Week is boring, Mr Moonlight is acknowledged pretty much as the Fabs worst song. I'll follow the Sun is nice, but too brief at under two minutes, with a George by numbers lead break. Mr Moonlight is hardly a song I rush to hear again. Wish I waited a few months and bought Help or Rubber Soul, both way superior.
@@darrenjray Go on enjoy the album if you want, we all love the Fabs, but c'mon, this is just a breather, there's no real gold here compared to groundbreaking other albums. A "serious" music store where we lived had an Import Record section. My sister bought Beatles For Sale there when it came out and was one of the few people who owned it.

I think this is an important album in their evolution into experimenting more. Usually I credit rubber soul for that but Beatles for sale had a cool folkiness to it and their fine artistry was being revealed. Even though it had lots of covers it was still very very beautifully crafted.
I love this album, because of an advancement in lyric themes, but also musical ideas. I'd rate it best LP before Rubber Soul. It would have been absolutely killer if 3 other songs from the sessions were included on it: She's A Woman, I Feel Fine & Leave My Kitten Alone. Leave off the 3 weakest covers instead. She's A Woman would've been a great opener!!
I am happy to say, after all these decades of listening to this album, you pointed out some very good points, that make ME say, this is the first record of their experimental period that ends in 67. Well done. You changed my perceptions!!
I had it higher than the highly overrated Sgt. Pepper and also Revolver. Beatles For Sale has the more listenable songs compared to the other two. Revolver has a few great tracks but that's it.
When I got the notification I thought the thumbnail said The Beatles for Smile and thought it was gonna talk about how the Beatles were somehow involved with the Beach Boy's Smile project
It is documented that Paul McCartney helped chew celery for the song "Vegetables," so you can technically make that argument www.the-paulmccartney-project.com/song/vega-tables/
Beatles For Sale has always been my favorite album by The Beatles, it’s a much more somber and sadder tone that The Beatles hadn’t tried much before the album and it really does exemplify their shift into being serious song writers, not just love ditties. I feel like this LP isn’t discussed or thought of much like their other records, possibly because it’s almost half covers. But with No Reply, I’m a Loser, Baby’s in Black, I’ll Follow The Sun, Mr. Moonlight, it just has track after track that is unlike anything they try. There’s some songs that do sound similar I can gladly admit, but how many songs/covers by The Beatles can you say sound similar? It’s almost kind of cool lol, but that’s just my long ass opinion.
Couldn't disagree more. And if you look at my other posts here, I know this record like no other. Nice of you to like it though. The band themselves don't rate this record as anything much, and while it's part of their story, it's a bit of a sour note in their most stellar careers, kind of a contractual obligation album. It certainly wasn't made because they felt a creative need to record, unlike just about everything else in their catalogue. As Lennon alluded in '69, you can syndicate any boat you row
I wouldn’t say I’ll Follow the Sun is an example of their writing styles diverging - the song dates back to the late 50s. It more likely was thrown in because they recorded the album on a deadline between concert dates and they needed something not too complicated to fill some space.
I liked the country/rockabilly feel to many of the songs on this album. George's "Chet Atkins" guitar style is superb which suited John and Paul's songs plus the covers particularly "Honey dont" and "Everybody's trying to be my baby" Surely the Byrds, Gram Parsons, and other West coast musicians were influenced by them to play country rock.
One funny bit of trivia: Eight Days A Week was released as a hit single in the US because DJs were importing "Beatles For Sale" to play the then unreleased songs. Being the first track on Side B, Eight Days A Week was usually the first song these DJs played, and the easiest to play on demand.
This is one of my favorite Beatles album, as many of the songs are what I call "Rock a Billy" ( you called them country western ). I play a little rhythm guitar, and these are the only Beatles songs that I can play, as they are in major chords, which is all I know. I just like them as well.
@@ryanoconnor5176 You are correct Sir. Buddy Holly was a early rock a billy performer, and is a reason they covered one of his songs on the album. It is one of my favorites to play, as well.

Beatles For Sale has been my least favorite album by them, but it's impressive to see that even within this album, they still manage to break the barriers of pop music as a whole! Reason why i don't enjoy the album so much is the quality of the music, most of it feels very unprofessional, although, still very enjoyable. ;D
