As a Cuban let me say this: Andres dying before being able to be with the one he loves is extremely relatable. We have a lot of loved ones pass away before we can say goodbye to them due to the authoritarian dictatorship. It’s terrible.
I feel you. As a fellow Cuban it hit hard because Andrea reminds me of my abuelo who’s in cuba still and is fighting cancer. I haven’t seen him in years and my family (especially my dad) is hoping to go visit once COVID finally dies down so we can spend some time with him after so long. Edit: COVID is on the rise again so we won’t be able to go for much longer than planned
If I had a nickel for every time a predator gave its prey "bedroom eyes" in an animated film, I'd have two nickels - which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.
Gabbi is visual vomit. I feel snobbish saying that since I'm an artist myself and don't wanna come off as thinking I could do better, but seriously, she looks like an OC I would've made in 2010.
I feel the same way, all those colors really hurt my eyes! Maybe if her color pallet was just 2 maybe 3 different colors she would have been fine, but no she has to wear a whole rainbow explosion because that's what it takes to be unique or something.
I love how gabbi is at a LITTERAL funeral and she is wearing the most vibrant outfit I know that the animators wanted to show off the design but its like if in the funeral scene from end they were all wearing vibrant costumes and talking like nothing happened
I'm so tired of screaming. I'm tired of "quirky girl with crazy hair", which is just the new "manic pixie dream girl". I'm tired of characters who come off as stupid and disrespectful. I'm tired of plots that are by-the-book and yet still disjointed. And I'm tired of serious stories that are constantly interrupted by a loud, silly story, because apparently people won't care unless there's something to laugh at. This seems like a melting part of all the things I feel are wrong with a lot of movies and TV shows right now.
Watch Hilda, Glitch Techs, Mitchells Vs the Machines, Kid Cosmic, The Owl House, Amphibia, Craig of the Creek, Spider-Verse, Primal, Encanto, Luca, Soul, etc. Those shows and movies aren't entirely bogged down by the problems you describe.
@@VigilanteLulu I only know Hilda, Owl House, Amphibia, Spider-Verse, Primal, and a tiny bit of Soul out of all of those, at least so far. :p Hilda is pretty lovable and cozy.
I loved Vivo...for like the first 15-20 minutes. I was super invested in Vivo and Andreas travelling to see Martha, and while that took a whole other turn into a different direction, I was interested in seeing how Vivo would go forward without Andreas. And then Gabbi showed up. I remember reading comments that mentioned that they didn't really like Gabbi (be it her sugar high character or just overall design), others will jump in and say "she's just a kid, a free spirit, she's experimenting with the way she looks", and coming from someone who more or less studies character design, it honestly came off as whoever was in charge of designing her thinking that "this is what kids look like nowadays!", like I guess it fits her personality? But it didn't come off as "oh Gabbi would wear that and dye her hair that colour", but came off as a "how do you fellow kids?" vibe. Personality wise, maybe because I was always the quiet kid, Gabbi definitely came off as a "not like other girls" kind of character and at times almost unbearable. Like I get that, most of us went through that phrase, especially since the other kids see her as a weirdo, the intention WAS there, but the execution (the rap song, my god, ears still bleeding) was too on the nose for me. Her whole "I miss dead dad" backstory was barely mentioned, like missed opportunity to bond with Vivo on a personal level. (Not to mention one of the concept artists brought up that one of the concept ideas for the plot was Vivo leading a blind Andreas to seeing Martha, LIKE I'D PAY TO WATCH THAT. Do not fear creating deeper emotions, stories shouldn't be limited for the sake of "amusing" children). Overall, I'd watch Vivo again, but I'll just skip through most of the Gabbi scenes, and stick around for Andreas, Martha and Vivo.
Agreed. Like her design feels so LOUD but not in a good way. Like I get wanting to give a quirky character some less normal traits to her outfit, but the super purple and kinda weirdly out of place style-wise hair, the clashing patterns, and multitude of colors don't give a place for the eye to rest when looking at her. Like my eye keeps going everywhere but her face, which considering the face is the most important part...yeah. She kinda reminds me of how kids get started drawing ocs-where they think more patterns/colors/crazy details are what make a good design.
The snake made my 3 year old nephew start crying and screaming Lol. He had to leave for a bit until it went away, I don't blame him the snake freaked me out too! This movie really felt like it was for really young kids, so I wonder why they decided to put such a frightening character in the movie when they didn't really need to..
He gave me classic disney villain vibes personally, so if that was what they were going for, I guess they thought "if they can get away with it, so can we"
13:00 I remember some people did mention Gabbi being "autism/ADHD coded" And from someone who is on the spectrum I'm not a fan. She doesn't feel like loving representation She just looks/feels like a bad stereotype? Like, It feels like she was made by someone who finds people on the spectrum "obnoxious/annoying" Idk if that makes sense But I'm sure a lot of people on the spectrum understand what I'm referring to There's another comment I saw on here that said she's supposed to be a quirky "I'm not like other girls" kind of character But comes off more like "How do you do fellow kids?" And I think that's the most accurate way to describe her
It just feels like an stereotypical new gen "quirky" kid caracter type of thing that would be written by a grandpa.. like those adults triyng to be cool quirky and apealing to kids when theyre really just stereotyping everything in a bad way
Yeah I think Gabbi is just a character that the creators made extremely hyperactive for the kids. Even if she was on the spectrum I wouldn't jump to thinking it's just negative cause she's super hyperactive. Each kid behaves differently.
why did they design the snake to have eyes where its nose should be. how do you fail at designing a snake?? they are some of the least complicated creatures in the animal kingdom!!
Not to mention the huge teeth that made it look more like an alligator than a snake. They do have teeth, but from what I've seen they're not super visible like that.
"Shrek didn't need to rap to tie up the dragon " And I see that as an absolute loss. Lol In all seriousness, I didn't mind the rap that much. Specifically vivo's.
I agree. I think that Hezu's comment about there being "too much rap" was just up to personal taste and I doubt she'll like Hamilton if she does ends up watching it... But yeah, my sister and I agreed that rather than less rap, maybe there just be less music all together? To me the rapping was great, I personally preferred it far more than that 'my own drum' song Gabi sang. Maybe if I was much younger I could get behind it because it is catchy... or maybe if I at least liked her character idk lmao. But if you know Lin Manuel, you know there is bound to be some rapping in a movie of his.
I actually like the rap. One of the reasons I wanted to watch the movie was because of Lin Manuel Miranda's music. I honestly wished there was a longer version of the tied up song. Though I equally dislike Gabi's drum song, I feel like the lyrics matches her character and wasn't supposed to be a hit, even though they treat it like a hit which is weird to me.
@@Gangstaliciousboss EXACTLY I thought I was the only one u watch a kids movie for kids as an adult what do you expect it's not going to be perfect for u it's for kids and just because she's in flashy clothes doesn't mean anything she's a kid she tried to explore not wear what you adult suspect little kids to wear and who cares about her rapping she's literally 10 her rapping is not going to be perfect and I think they did it perfectly by leaving them on a happy song at the end
Imagine this subversion of the "quirky" girl goes on an adventure with a creature: The creature goes with the serious kid, like that one girl scout. And there is no "inside she's quirky" and stuff, they have to work around their differences and it's shown that both got good points. Anyway, Gabbie was a mess. I looked forward to Vivo, but jeez. Wish Vivo either went with Andreas, alone or with a different animal. 6:50 Ok, it is kinda hilarious that Miranda totally based this of "My Shot", like, this drop is so iconic, it's noticable. At least it will definitely remind many of "My Shot". The scene in the end was so sad, but it was so beautiful. I wish we had gotten more of such stuff.
When you said Gabi's rapping made the rapping even worse, it just gave me PTSD from my siblings constantly turning it on at least once almost every day.
When I watched it, my biggest problem was...Vivo really didn't need to speak/sing. Was it just so Lin could sing a bunch in the movie that he had a big hand in? No one actually understands him, like, at all when he speaks; And most the good music was sung by others. This is all personal opinion of course, but I really think if Vivo never actually spoke/sung? It'd be an improvement.
I hate characters like Gabbi. Visually loud and completely obnoxious, seriously how many characters do we have that are "different and don't fit in" while wearing rainbow vomit and constantly explain to us how different they are?!
I like Vivo's reactions to the new culture Gabi shows to him. He seems very reluctant at first and for a good chunk of the movie. Only after he learns why Gabi is the way she is, he warms up a bit to her likings. I like the Snake, he just wanted some silence (something Gabi doesn't seem to like very much lol). I love the animated bits! They look so vibrant and beautiful, they also flow very well. Overall, I liked the movie, but wouldn't watch it again. Beat of my own drums is awful that sounds so so bad, the rest of the music is okay to great. Edit: After watching the rest of the video, I think they should have gone with the tonal contrast theme to the max if they really wanted to keep both. I think it'd be better, as it'd have showed how weird this all is from Vivo's point of view.
I honestly wish the jungle scenes didn't take up so much of the movie. The way they set up Havana was straight up BEAUTIFUL. I would've loved to see more of the community around there and how Andres impacted them. Same thing with Miami. But because of the way it went I thought the pacing was all over the place in the end. I will say though that the animation and music were pretty good, mainly One More Song and Mambo Cabana.
Couldn't agree more! Something felt very comforting and inviting about Havana, almost nostalgic somehow. And Miami looked so gorgeous that I had to Google images of it just to see if it really looked like that at night! But nah, let's spend a good 65% of the movie in a drab, grungy, dark green swamp instead. Sigh.
I started watching Vivo like a month ago and then literally stopped after Gabbi was on screen for like 1 minute just because I already knew what she'd be like after a few seconds of dialogue and her appearance. You want me to like the character that's trying to be quirky and comedic right in the middle of another character's funeral. That was just in extremely poor taste and I don't know what the writers were thinking when they introduced Gabbi that way.
As someone who likes the movie, I don't know why they thought it was a good idea to be comedic with Gabi right there during Ernesto's funeral. That scene was very emotional, not a time to introduce Gabi's character like that.
@@BratzRockAngels Yeah exactly. I did end up finishing the movie eventually. I still didn’t like her for most of the movie. I did start to warm up to her when she finally told her mom why she went to such lengths to help Vivo, but that was like 5 minutes before the movie ended.
@@raunjisto2925 Yeah, the movie's ending was definitely emotional. My mother's mother/my grandmother passed recently and my mother can definitely relate to this movie, so I cried very hard. I don't find Gabi unlikeable, but I do understand if people don't like her quirkiness, but for me, she isn't so bad that she's unlikeable.
It could have been that as a child who’s never gone to a funeral before, she didn’t know how to act? I agree tho, a funeral isn’t the best place to introduce a super high energy character like Gabbi
@@Tailfeathers11 Right, while Gabi’s own character could’ve just been clueless, the writing choice to make that be the case in that scenario wasn’t a good one.
At the start, Vivo is kinda like UP - dealing with very mature feelings and scenario. But UP managed to be a great movie after its initial ten minute opening, while this just...didnt. Honestly? This movie at times kinda feels like it was written by people who think children are super obnoxious but had to write for them anyways. I dont think thats how they actually felt about it, but thats the vibe the characters gfive off.
I feel like that's an overused trope as it is, but it also stresses me out when I see characters forced into situations that are just one long panic attack...
This movie feels like a decent story that someone snuck their Patreon-Goal OC into, and wound up crippling the entire premise. I understand kids are young, impetuous, impossible-to-define balls of excitement and sanity-defiant direction, but good lord, Gabbi ground this movie to a halt almost every time she was in a scene AND SHE'S ALMOST IN ALL OF 'EM! I got a hangover from that character; maybe because she's overplayed and everyone else becomes underplayed by it, but that is the kind of hangover I used to get from eating an entire box of Oreos as a kid, along with a liter of root beer... uugh, it made me fussy and sick, and I want my mommy and my wubby... I don't like being old and stubborn and grouchy, I'm sorry, just-- c'mon, take an extra month and write things out. otherwise, movie was perfectly serviceable, coulda done without so much rap either because old school is more my thing, but hey, no one's perfect.. lovely review though, that's a sub sammich for you~
Vivo does remind me of King Julian missing party members of his main crew while Gabi herself looks like she came straight out of Boss Baby. One Of A Kind/Reprise Grand Finale, Mambo Cabana, and Inside Your Heart Is one of my favorite songs throughout this movie.
fun fact: the character designer for vivo made the characters for boss baby (i love this movie but was it so hard to get anyone else or redesign the proportions)
I genuinely quit watching Vivo the first time around when Andreas died and they introduced Gabi, I was so upset and didn't want to continue to watch the movie. Eventually I finished it I think I enjoyed it more because my standards were so low.
Man- my cub scout handbook did *NOT* have detailed raft building instructions. It didn't even have knot tieing. Why do the girl scouts get all the good stuff! Also, girls could join the cub scouts and participate, so my sister got to have fun at my scout meetings, but the girls scouts disallowed boys, so I had to sit and wait for the meeting to be over with all the parents. Yeah- that sure feels like "corrective equality" to me.
Are you sure it wasn't because of the age difference? Not to undermine your expirence, but whenever I transfered from cubscouts to regular scouting raft building became a requirement in order to reach first class.
Definitely a double standard. Girls be always want to be doing boy stuff, but god forbid a boy interested in "inherently feminine" things or him wanting to join girls in activities. As a girl, I find the double standard DISGUSTING. There's definitely a disgusting societal standard on the way society treats/sees boys/men. Glaringly obvious. Yet feminists won't stfu about "misogny." 🙄
Andres story plot was so heart wrenching and I loved it but every time gabby showed up on screen I wanted to switch movies. Some of the character designs are fine but some characters just look....awful. As an artist when I’m watching something I like looking at character designs and gabbys design made me want to rip my eyes out same with the ugly snake.
It would have been better if Gabby was so over the top, as a way to keep other away like she knows it puts ppl off then she won't have to worry about them abandoning her. Like line she could have said. When "Vivo, your the first one who just didn't leave me.... I want to be apart of a group but what if they don't want me, so I'm loud and in there face so when they don't want me as a friend.....i can say "they just can't keep up with my tempo" it hurts less that way."
I would actually tolerate Gabby more if she had MORE depth like what you've written. I know people would say "but she's 10-12, kids don't have to have a lot of depth! You're reaching too much into it!" and okay, fine, but she's a character in a film we're all watching. What's the point of seeing her if she has nothing to add to the table but by being all "not like the others" and loud with poor planning skills and never really grow from start to end? Like take Russell from Up for example (cuz some people compare them), he's kinda loud and pushy, but the reason he throws himself into his wilderness explorer activities is because his dad stopped being around for him after having a new gf/wife and he wants his dad to be at his badge ceremony. Gabby could had be written to feel abandoned by her dad (maybe not in death like in the film but by him leaving for another woman) and act all loud and proud so no one could stand her. She could be as strong a character as Andreas if she had been written with more care and less "relate to kids (it didn't land) and just be laughable".
@@jessoliveiro8975 ppl who says "she a kid and kids don't have That much dept to them." Is the same mentality as dumming down shows & book because its for kids. Kids are so smart they do understand stand more than we give them credit and when they don't understand something you give them an example so they can, and the way I would have written her might have helped a kid who was doing just the same thing, and maybe gave them something to think about.
Personally Vivo was hard to watch, there always just.. too much going on. But that's just my opinion, the music was good, and so was the animation. I just never knew what to focus on.
Gabbi's design hurts my eyes and it could be that she's figuring out how to dress herself but if they wanted to go with that then how about having a scene where Vivo finds a bunch of super random clothes and photos where she has different hairstyles and stuff.
"But then the characters realize they're protected by plot armor and put the song back together" Vivo and Gabi recreating the song isn't plot armor. The first thing Vivo does when Andrés shows him the song is hum the melody, and the first thing Gabi does when Vivo shows her the song is read the lyrics, so Gabi knowing the lyrics, Vivo knowing the melody, and them recreating the song makes sense.
I love this movie (except for Gabbi's singing) to bits. It has the energy and atmosphere of old movies from 90s. It's not fantastic and not terrible, it's entertaining, needs some suspension of disbelief and has a heart. And it was quite refreshing after all that crap like "Boss baby", "Minions" and "The secret life of pets".
I would take in consideration that not everyone grieves the same with every person they meet. We don't know how close she was to her dad compared to her grandparent. On top of that being 10 I wouldn't expect her to full understand the situation with death 100% she might miss her dad full hearted but the thoughts of missing he could be too painful for her so she avoids looking at photos or talking about him. Some people avoid any that could give them painful memories of a passed love. Things as small as photos or avoiding buildings that you knew that person love to go to. There is some much to think about in that situation the writers didn't go in too that I don't feel it's her fault completely for not being able to "read the room" in the thing. But this is me going of the context in the video.
Your Spanish pronunciation is good! Cheers! What's interesting is that several side characters (like the snake and the spoonbill) had Portuguese names. I don't know why, but I'm not complaining.
@@hezureviews I really liked your review too, Although I have to say this you can never have too much rap as long as it's good. In my opinion the scene you showed with vivo tying of the snake wasn't really that bad that wasn't necessary but it wasn't a bad. Still enjoyed your review and if you're willing to do a request do you think you might review into the spider verse, Although if you're not into superhero movies then don't worry about it
i actually LOVE Gabbi. She reminds me of being 6-8 years old on a summer break with a room full of ants that you keep trying to capture, and you watched some stupid undertale au comics, and you have a lot of LPS dolls and pieces but their either missing or you painted on them, and the blinds were always raised and the sun warmed your room, also you had a gum addiction, you had a messed up collections of beanie boos + You had a big frozen dollhouse that you don't use anymore so you stored random stuff in it and you took the clothes off your barbie dolls and/or mix-matched them. ITS JUST A HIT OF NOSTALGIA RADIATING FROM THIS CHARACTER NSRGIJRH.
I think Vivo is fine. Its a movie thats on in the background while my little siblings watch. I really don't like the way Gabbi looks. She's TOO chaotic. Also Beat of my Own Drum is my least favorite song yet my 1 year sister loves it to death. Encanto definitely was Lins better work and honestly, I hope he takes a break I will say that the movie is severely disjointed and im pretty sure the only reason i have watched it is because of my little siblings and i do like some of the songs (Keel the Beat, the songs the birds sing) Poor Vivo getting thrown around is the best part lmao
I want to start this off by saying i liked the video. It is always interesting to see how others feel about a show especially when it differs from mine. However you can definitely tell that she is not someone who understands music fusion, or musicals. Because this movie was based around being similar to a musical. Which changes the way certain things are paced and how many songs will be contained in the movie. I also feel that she missed the actual primary message of the movie. Which is to embrace your individuality. You can share your passions with others, but you don't have to "give up" being yourself.
True! That type of music is Lin Manuel Miranda's specialty! It’s one of the main reasons why I really enjoyed it. It reminded me a lot of Hamilton and In the Heights. It made me think she hasn’t heard of Lin’s other works yet, considering how much she complains about the music, particularly the rapping…
Tbh Gabi is a mediocre character but it would’ve been a bit better if Vivo and Gabi connected more through their dead relatives (Andrias and Gabi’s dad). I would love to think that Gabi’s inspiration for being so upbeat and outgoing is due to her late Father and I think that could be explored in the movie a bit more than just lines.
Lin Manuel Miranda went HAM on those screams in the movie. And yes for those who didn't know, Lin Manuel Miranda did voice act as Vivo. Honestly, it explains the rapping a whole lot now
You know, the fact that this movie feels like it will be a nuanced lowkey adult movie at first but then it just goes full kiddy movie.. it reaaally reminds me of UP tbh, even if I liked both movies. Also, and maybe this is stupid and it’s just the lighting, but is Gabi darker in the poster than it the movie?
I’m Cuban and liked the whole vibe of the movie as it’s pretty accurate in the music (the authentic Cuban music part the rest just felt like watching Hamilton again) and culture part but Gabbi threw it off. She feels like a self insert from some 10 year old. (No shade to 10 year olds)
I was really invested in the story at the start, but when Gabby came in i just was like lets get this over with quickly, i felt like it was too fast but i guess that was good with me since i just wanted it to end, i can watch it, but i wouldn't do it by myself
Vivo is the first movie or piece of fiction to ever make me genuinely cry. The middle act dragged on a bit too long but the beginning and the end was what hit me hard. I'm very glad i could connect with these characters and this movie really spoke to me in ways i have never seen before.
Gabi's character in specific did speak to me the most, I feel distant from my mother and only connected more with my father until he died. That scene in the car did remind me of something that happened between me and my mother so this movie hit me very hard
10:56 the lyrics are " I bounce to the beat of my own drum, " " I'm a *wow* in a world full of ho-hum, " " I'm a wild young lady but you know 'sum? " " *I'd rather be at home with my own drum.* "
I think there's a difference between blending things together in unexpected ways (history and hip hop, for example), with actual whiplash, which is just bouncing the audience between two things that don't feel like they work together at all. Such as the contrast of a heartfelt story with something that's quirky and wild.
I think it’s more like… the whiplash comes too soon. Tone shifts like that are tricky and if you go from a quiet, dramatic moment where your invested viewer is wrapped up in those feelings to something loud and comedic too quickly, it is disruptive, patronizing and can make a viewer feel dumb for being wrapped up in the moment. Ie, there is buildup from Mufasa’s death to Timone and Pumbaa being introduced to them adopting Simba and THEN we get Hakuna Mattata.
@@pharoahcaraboo9610 The Lion King is a perfect example. You have scenes with very different moods, but there's no dissonance because the story flows well, and you don't feel tossed around.
Since you reviewed an underrated movie with colorful, cute characters, may I suggest an also Netflix movie called Back To The Outback? I found it wholesome but I know it has some flaws.
@@hezureviews Honestly, I don't blame you. The Lyrics are kinda difficult to understand, and *I* certainly wouldn't want to listen to it multiple times, just to make sure I got the Lyrics right.
ok but nobody talks about how Lin makes the movie 10,000 times better with his voice, he's a spectacular man With a voice twice as great but yeah, the snake is terrifying
I am enjoying your videos way too much considering I'm for the most part not interested in the movies or series you're talking about (Vivo is no exception to that and I don't think I'll watch it anytime soon). I guess it's just a mixture of your humour, general personally and art style why I like your videos so much. Keep it up!
Top tip: If you solely go by what a reviewer says instead of watching the show or movie for yourself, you may be missing out on some worthwhile stuff. Don't be afraid to be curious. Form your own opinion!
Omgg I love everything you’ve said it’s spot on! After watching I came to the conclusion that it would’ve been much more effective as a short film! Like how the first 10 minutes of up works on its own. The best moments really shine and the rest dragged wayyy too hard!
You are absolutely right even though I LOVE the love bird's song the most & listen to it on repeat 🤣👌 I was thinking about the sudden reveal of Gabbi's tragic backstory and how right the girl scouts were while watching the movie, too 🤣🤣🤣 Keep Up The Good Work~!
LOL, your avatar's expressions is so adorable, funny, and about 10x more expressive than every other youtube animator. XD How do you have like 10 faces or so for your character? :O I swear, good content or not, most people only seem to have like... 5 at most, but you have a lot. ._. I almost want to follow you just to see more of your character, she feels so alive, it's great. XD
12:59 And even if that was true, it sets up neurodivergent people in a bad, unlikable light and it may teach viewers to see those people as annoying and hopeless (maybe that's a strong word) instead of just struggling. It doesn't give much love to younger generations either and Gabi's character lacks a lot of self-awareness throughout the movie.
I mean her look did look off- its something you'd find in Austin Texas or in a big city- i can't see where she would get that look from. But her personality makes sense. She's an awkward kid with a big personality, who's trying her hand at music despite not having a teacher. So it makes sense she doesn't sound good- she's teaching herself. And vivo doesn't stay with her because he wants to on multiple occasions he was forced to. Chased by a dog, doesn't have a way or direction to reach that woman. Also the girl was the only one who came close to that music sheet when that storm hit. So vivo had been forced to stay with her.
3:62 Karen: Henshaw! are you using a plastic bag?!?! also Karen: next to boxes made from trees that most likely have a protective plastic film over the cookies.
Dang, I might be the only person who enjoyed BEAT OF MY OWN DRUM. I just really enjoy the sequence's all-out nature. It may be too much, but it knows it's too much, and it's a pretty accurate representation of Gabbi's character. Dunk on the chorus all you want, but the line "Extra!! Extra!! Read all about it, I'm extra!! extra!!" lives rent-free in my head
I honestly don't get the hate on Gabby yeah she's crazy and all over the place but that's her point and that's what Vevo helps her with he calms her down in the scene when he helps her learn and how to actually drum he makes her slow down and actually take it one step at a time and what she does for him is she gets him out of his routineAnd his comfort zone
I loved Vivo. The animation was great, every song was good-although the birds DIDN'T really matter, but eh-and anything with Lin-Manuel is great, in my opinion. I haven't found anything I disliked. I've heard a lot of people dislike Gabbi's design, but like... She's a KID..???? And she literally has a song about being herself and doing her own thing, so why would it MATTER how she looks. And personality wise? She's a fucking KID! I don't EXPECT her to make this simple. Vivo has been with this old man since he was found, so he's not around incompetence, glaring colors and music that...doesn't sound like music.. Shit, I'D be tired of Gabbi too, but never had she done anything with malice, hatred, and never did she try to do anything bad or wrong. She's just A KID trying to do the best the can while still keeping true to her pure thoughts and feelings of being herself. And a lot of times? Kids don't think. They just do. She'll learn eventually. And they MADE it to the concert, so I mean.. They DID it.😅😆 With Vivo, it's Lin-Manuel Miranda... You have to expect him to rap in shit, and if HE doesn't, then whoever's IN the media will rap something Lin-Manuel wrote.. (I.e., Moana) The scouts were annoying. Carrie needed to sit her ass down somewhere, but we needed conflict, so we got it in kid form. The snake's head was WEIRDLY designed, but I mean, he's a snake that wants to eat you. It wouldn't matter how he looked if he actually ate you.😆 Again, the birds didn't really matter, but we got them. We've had movies with pointless shit before, and that part could've been WAY worse. FINALLY glad I saw it cause my nephew and I realized Running Out Of Time was the tiktok/Instagram meme song for a while, but we didn't realize it was from Vivo.😆 The song at the concert was beautiful. And now Vivo has another family! And he can go back to making music, and he and Gabbi can teach each other about different kinds of music (similar to their duet in the forest. I liked that part.) The movie isn't for everyone, as is with media in general, but it did me a world of good, and I LOVE the song, My Own Drum. Gives me a good message about being me. Doing what I want. I don't have to be like everyone else, that sort of thing.😆
I'll say this: the random hurricane is actually such a common thing in Florida- especially around summer time (and around the everglades) Though they're really just.. afternoon tropical storms that last around 20 minutes. "4:40" Hurricanes out of nowhere In Florida? You don't say. (But in all seriousness it isn't too uncommon for hurricanes to stroll around Florida (mainly during the summer)) [Good review by the way]
i actually really liked vivo , i thought it was sweet. while gabbi's design wasn't my favorite , she reminds me of little me in a way, but she did annoy me a bit. overall thought it was sweet and a cute kids movie
I'm so surprised how much I agreed with this video. I shared a lot of the exact same thoughts while watching the movie! To me, this movie felt like such a generic kids movie. It even ended with a dance party.
I like Gabbi, she came off as VERY ADHD to me. Little known symptom of ADHD: a lot of us are reckless and rougher on objects than we tend to realize, even when we're actively being careful, we often get told we're too loud, energetic and annoying, and her rap about marching to the beat of her own drum really makes me think that she does not fit in and gets ostracized by her peers. and I really like how amateur her rhyming was, it really felt like something a ten year old girl would come up with. as someone who is tone-deaf, her bad singing didn't bother me at all. either way, I found her to be one of the most believable child characters I've seen in years.
This movie in a nut shell: *old man and Vivo have a good dynamic:Yes yes yes *the movie has gorgeous animation:Yes Yes Yes *they have a good reason to go from point a to point b: YES YES YES *Old man dies: NO NO N- *Anoying second main character: NO n- *not very good songs after the first one and the last one: N- *The final scenes of the movie: oh its getting good again! *The credits: GOD FUC-
I can understand why they didn't make the whole thing animated like the 2D segments, aka it would make it less special (and probably more expensive) but the style alone that the rest of it is in is just... why. I love the cartoonish exaggeration and making characters different shapes, but why they gotta make the characters eyes super big and super close to each other with barely noticeable noses? There is Andres and Andres' ... friend(?) that are the exceptions, but why aren't the rest of the characters following that style? Its like one person designed those two while someone else designed the rest of the characters with a hair, skin and eye generator.
Call me a hater, but I remember after I watched this film, SEARCHING for negative reviews on youtube and finding virtually none. I ended up calling one of my friends and complaining about most of the things you covered. Then today I thought about looking again and I am so happy to have my opinion validated.
I feel the complaint on the different music genres isn't a good complaint saying as this movie was made with lin-manuel Miranda a Broadway actor in the musician his whole goal with the movie was to show off different genres of music to a young audience
I've been doing art for about 9 years now and I'm of course still not very good at it and I'm still learning. But. Damn. Gabbi's design is a massive eye sore for me and it's painful for me to watch her on screen
I’m going to be honest, I would of preferred the movie if Vivo couldn’t talk to the audience. He can’t talk to the characters, why make him talk to us? I understand it’s the easiest way to make us understand what Vivo is feeling, but there are plenty of non verbal characters that prove you can make it work. Vivo talking felt a bit forced, and trying to hard to appeal to kids.
If they went with the story I excepted at the first 10 minutes or so (being him going to it with Andres which sure would’ve taken away from the sadness but andres is a good character who I would’ve liked to see more of) then I feel this movie could’ve been 100X better.
In my opinion I disagree that's exactly what I thought was going to happen but then it just would have been like so many other animated movies it caught me off-guard that Andres died and I respect them for going that way
It’s always interesting when you look at a film and realize that a villainous character is actually morally right.

My thoughts exactly!!!
Agreed.
Agreed!👍🏾
Oh dear Lord thank you so much. Whenever I say I think Gabbi is annoying I get a ton of flak.
He gave me classic disney villain vibes personally, so if that was what they were going for, I guess they thought "if they can get away with it, so can we"
@@MrKaiju-sr8wu It kind of seems like that one snake dude from The Jungle Book. :p

I remember some people did mention Gabbi being "autism/ADHD coded"
And from someone who is on the spectrum
I'm not a fan.
She doesn't feel like loving representation
She just looks/feels like a bad stereotype? Like, It feels like she was made by someone who finds people on the spectrum "obnoxious/annoying"
Idk if that makes sense
But I'm sure a lot of people on the spectrum understand what I'm referring to
There's another comment I saw on here that said she's supposed to be a quirky "I'm not like other girls" kind of character
But comes off more like
"How do you do fellow kids?"
And I think that's the most accurate way to describe her
Anakin is more of a good autistic rep than Gabby

Yeah I think Gabbi is just a character that the creators made extremely hyperactive for the kids. Even if she was on the spectrum I wouldn't jump to thinking it's just negative cause she's super hyperactive. Each kid behaves differently.
lilo was the only character that pulled of the every one thinks im weird trope ( aka quirky girl) she did it in a very charming way.

"Shrek didn't need to rap to tie up the dragon "
And I see that as an absolute loss. Lol
In all seriousness, I didn't mind the rap that much.
Finally a nice comment about the movie

Same, I only watched the movie because of Lin Manuel Miranda's music. I'm living for his music.
Imagine this subversion of the "quirky" girl goes on an adventure with a creature:
The creature goes with the serious kid, like that one girl scout.

Same but the va tried hard
Same but my mom used play it full blast in the car

When I watched it, my biggest problem was...Vivo really didn't need to speak/sing. Was it just so Lin could sing a bunch in the movie that he had a big hand in? No one actually understands him, like, at all when he speaks; And most the good music was sung by others. This is all personal opinion of course, but I really think if Vivo never actually spoke/sung? It'd be an improvement.
The best part about this is that its clear that no one understands Vivo, so i just imagine everyone else hears monkey screeching
I honestly thought he wasn’t gonna speak or sing at all. I think I would’ve liked the movie better that way

Sigh.
It’s Lin Manuel, rap is kind of his thing. But yeah, the ending made me cry, but then the music changed and I’m like, “But I wanted to cry!”
I hate that my baby cousin’s name is Manuel.
The real horror in this movie was Gabi’s hair
I'm a little bit disturbed the poor little animal had panic attacks
Yet feminists won't stfu about "misogny." 🙄
,,,,,, my dude. Boy scouts exist. Don't get all gender offended just because you got sent to the knock off brand scouts
Personally
Vivo was hard to watch, there always just.. too much going on.
But that's just my opinion, the music was good, and so was the animation. I just never knew what to focus on.
Gabbi's design hurts my eyes and it could be that she's figuring out how to dress herself but if they wanted to go with that then how about having a scene where Vivo finds a bunch of super random clothes and photos where she has different hairstyles and stuff.
i love how when gabi sees an animal in distress and sad that their owner just died and is immediently like *Ok! come with me to florida!!!!!*
"Miss, this is a funeral!"
"But then the characters realize they're protected by plot armor and put the song back together"
Vivo and Gabi recreating the song isn't plot armor.
The way they animated the eyes of the snake make it look like a little animal inside a costume.
Once I heard "dance to my own drumb" I DIED and practically screamed "LIN WROTE THIS?!?"
But.... Running Out Of Time was a vibe.
I never thought I'd hear Lin go "THIS IS BORDERLINE AB*SE!"
I actually liked the entire film even though yes I think it has some crazy plot holes it was actually quite fun to watch in my opinion
I liked the snake a lot personally, he gave me classic disney villain vibes
also hearing a character unironically refer to themself as a “wild young lady” makes me want to rip all of my hair out
I would take in consideration that not everyone grieves the same with every person they meet.
I don't know why, but I'm not complaining.

i actually LOVE Gabbi.
Encanto definitely was Lins better work and honestly, I hope he takes a break
I will say that the movie is severely disjointed and im pretty sure the only reason i have watched it is because of my little siblings and i do like some of the songs (Keel the Beat, the songs the birds sing)
Poor Vivo getting thrown around is the best part lmao
Honestly when I saw this on my Netflix catalogue I just looked that the girl's design, read the sinopse, and said "This is not gonna be good."
I’m totally OK with the music not all being the same genre. I like everything except my own drum
“Who gives their dinner bedroom eyes?!”
Hezu, didn’t you know you can catch way more flies with honey than vinegar. lmao
Gross
Lin Manuel Miranda went HAM on those screams in the movie. And yes for those who didn't know, Lin Manuel Miranda did voice act as Vivo. Honestly, it explains the rapping a whole lot now
At one point, one of my mutuals on Twitter made a supercut of 'Vivo but it's just Lin-Manuel screaming' and Lin actually liked it 🤣
I actually like the snake design, it’s so differently unique that it’s so memorable
That scene in the car did remind me of something that happened between me and my mother so this movie hit me very hard

the lyrics are
" I bounce to the beat of my own drum, "
" I'm a *wow* in a world full of ho-hum, "
" I'm a wild young lady but you know 'sum? "
" *I'd rather be at home with my own drum.* "
I'm definitely Lin bias, but i thought mood whiplash was Lin's "thing" 😅
I found it wholesome but I know it has some flaws.
that movie? we watched spike the first ten minutes and I already knew where the movie was going lmfao
The characters sucked tho
@@Kiib_
Not fully
@@Kiib_ fr they’re so basic and predictable
At 10:55 the lyrics are actually "i'm a wow in a world for of ho-hum." Not wild. Think its meant to be she's like really lively in a boring world, idk
Yeah
oH oops I think I misheard the lyrics then, thank you!
@@hezureviews Np! ^^
Why didn't they just mail the letter?
I haven’t watched the video yet but right off the bat I’ll say the beginning and end of this movie are strong but the middle kinda drags along!
Omgg I love everything you’ve said it’s spot on! After watching I came to the conclusion that it would’ve been much more effective as a short film! Like how the first 10 minutes of up works on its own. The best moments really shine and the rest dragged wayyy too hard!
You are absolutely right even though I LOVE the love bird's song the most & listen to it on repeat 🤣👌
I was thinking about the sudden reveal of Gabbi's tragic backstory and how right the girl scouts were while watching the movie, too 🤣🤣🤣
Keep Up The Good Work~!
Also her entire song is just sensory issues the musical
I mean her look did look off- its something you'd find in Austin Texas or in a big city- i can't see where she would get that look from. But her personality makes sense. She's an awkward kid with a big personality, who's trying her hand at music despite not having a teacher. So it makes sense she doesn't sound good- she's teaching herself. And vivo doesn't stay with her because he wants to on multiple occasions he was forced to. Chased by a dog, doesn't have a way or direction to reach that woman. Also the girl was the only one who came close to that music sheet when that storm hit. So vivo had been forced to stay with her.

Karen: Henshaw! are you using a plastic bag?!?!
also Karen: next to boxes made from trees that most likely have a protective plastic film over the cookies.
4:02 ?
Yes ! 😂
Extra!! Read all about it, I'm extra!! extra!!" lives rent-free in my head
oh sweet Jesus.
They DID it.😅😆
With Vivo, it's Lin-Manuel Miranda...
You have to expect him to rap in shit, and if HE doesn't, then whoever's IN the media will rap something Lin-Manuel wrote..
(I.e., Moana)
The scouts were annoying. Carrie needed to sit her ass down somewhere, but we needed conflict, so we got it in kid form.
The snake's head was WEIRDLY designed, but I mean, he's a snake that wants to eat you.
It wouldn't matter how he looked if he actually ate you.😆
Again, the birds didn't really matter, but we got them.
We've had movies with pointless shit before, and that part could've been WAY worse.
FINALLY glad I saw it cause my nephew and I realized Running Out Of Time was the tiktok/Instagram meme song for a while, but we didn't realize it was from Vivo.😆
The song at the concert was beautiful.
And now Vivo has another family! And he can go back to making music, and he and Gabbi can teach each other about different kinds of music (similar to their duet in the forest. I liked that part.)
The movie isn't for everyone, as is with media in general, but it did me a world of good, and I LOVE the song, My Own Drum.
Gives me a good message about being me. Doing what I want.
I don't have to be like everyone else, that sort of thing.😆
Exactly
Yeah I was like "Geeze, people really be over here getting annoyed by the 10 year old"
For rapping:
Since this was a Lin Manuel Marina musical ish-
The rapping is basically his thing.
So yeah…expect rapping with his movies.
Lin was really going all out this year.
I'll say this: the random hurricane is actually such a common thing in Florida- especially around summer time (and around the everglades)
Though they're really just.. afternoon tropical storms that last around 20 minutes. As someone who lives here, it made me laugh. But I can see how it doesn't make sense for someone who lives anywhere else.
"4:40" Hurricanes out of nowhere In Florida? You don't say. (But in all seriousness it isn't too uncommon for hurricanes to stroll around Florida (mainly during the summer)) [Good review by the way]
“The entire movie is just the main character having a panic attack”
i actually really liked vivo , i thought it was sweet. while gabbi's design wasn't my favorite , she reminds me of little me in a way, but she did annoy me a bit. overall thought it was sweet and a cute kids movie
I don’t know how to explain it. But that snake is the most dream works snake I’ve ever seen.
"Total unnecesary rapping"
Lin Manuel: *chuckles i'm in danger
After this review I'm more and more curious about what she thinks about The Mitchells vs. The machines
This movie in a nut shell:
*old man and Vivo have a good dynamic:Yes yes yes
*the movie has gorgeous animation:Yes Yes Yes
*they have a good reason to go from point a to point b: YES YES YES
*Old man dies: NO NO N-
*Anoying second main character: NO n-
*not very good songs after the first one and the last one: N-
*The final scenes of the movie: oh its getting good again!
*The credits: GOD FUC-

Vivo’s yelling is iconic 🌟
"who gives their dinner bedroom eyes"
look, when im hungry enough-
I feel the complaint on the different music genres isn't a good complaint saying as this movie was made with lin-manuel Miranda a Broadway actor in the musician his whole goal with the movie was to show off different genres of music to a young audience
I've been doing art for about 9 years now and I'm of course still not very good at it and I'm still learning. But. Damn. Gabbi's design is a massive eye sore for me and it's painful for me to watch her on screen
Actually, in the main chorus of "My Own Drum" the second line actually reads I'm a wow in a world full of ho-hum
sort of random, but i really love your oc on the right side's facial expressions
"WHO GIVES THEIR DINNER BEDROOM EYES?!"
Uhm...everything I simp for...should I be worried?
I’m going to be honest, I would of preferred the movie if Vivo couldn’t talk to the audience. He can’t talk to the characters, why make him talk to us? I understand it’s the easiest way to make us understand what Vivo is feeling, but there are plenty of non verbal characters that prove you can make it work. Vivo talking felt a bit forced, and trying to hard to appeal to kids.
andrias: fucking dies
vivo and literally everybody: damn that sucks bro
I wonder how much Lin’s voice hurt after this
i love the structure and art style of this video
I didn’t bother to watch the movie,I just like these reviews
If they went with the story I excepted at the first 10 minutes or so (being him going to it with Andres which sure would’ve taken away from the sadness but andres is a good character who I would’ve liked to see more of) then I feel this movie could’ve been 100X better.
In my opinion I disagree that's exactly what I thought was going to happen but then it just would have been like so many other animated movies it caught me off-guard that Andres died and I respect them for going that way
