I don't own Ragtime and I didn't record any of the videos or audios used in this video. No copyright infringement intended.
I feel like people are overlooking Mamie. She sounded great! I wish there was a video of her performance.
Marin sings from her soul making all of these amazing versions sound like recitations. I miss her so.
Marin's version is still the best. Lea's was phenomenal! She's perfect for the role of the Mother on its revival (hoping)!
While Lea Salonga sings it beautifully, the overall best interpretation is still the original Mother, Marin Mazzie. She IS Mother.
Maria Friedman's is... strange.
Marin is a force to be reckoned with!! I do have to agree with you about Maria Friedman's though. Something about it didn't work for me!
Marin Mazzie will always be the gold standard Mother for me. Her voice is like a clear, clarion bell. Absolutely amazing!!
Donald S Marin is incredible!
Why does Maria sound and look happy
I think I prefer Marin Mazzie because hers is the biggest voice, like it has heft. It sounds more mature compared to all the others who have lighter, almost girlish voices. I almost wish Patti had sung this, or, God, as long as we're wishing, why not Whitney. Haha
Zuri Patti was the original Mother in workshops and sang Back to Before in concerts in the 90s... I know there's a video on here... Another voice of that era that should have played this part is Judy Kuhn.
John Webb oh cool I didn't know that. Haha I only recently saw the video of Patti singing this in concert. It felt a bit rushed and a bit dry, but Patti's voice sorta made up for it. I dunno, there's just something very compelling about her voice, even when she's not singing her best. LOL
John Webb and OMG yes, Judy Kuhn!! She was a wonderful Cosette, but her I dreamed a dream has always been on my best list.
Zuri I understand and agree, I love La Lupone!
Lea's clip must be from the Ragtime concert, no? In her subsequent performances of this song (like the one where she's wearing a green dress or the one where she's wearing a black pantsuit), she belts the last sustained "back" which to me fits better, because in this clip, her shift back into mixed voice kinda takes you out of the moment, slightly diminishing the emotional impact of the ending.
Marin Mazzie and Rosalie Craig !!!!!!
Can't argue about either! Both give stunning performances and I would have loved to have seen them do the show
I might be the only one who really likes Christiane Noll. I was in a regional production of Ragtime as Booker T. Washington, and our Mother was more Christiane than Marin. Not to say any actress is bad in any role.
Stephen Valentine I love Christiane Noll in the role! I love her in everything she does but yeah, I love her Mother.
Marin Mazzie hands down!
Marin, the original mother would always be the best but Lea's version is also outstanding, that crystal clear voice and the emotion she puts through the song touches me 😊
I love both their version, for different reasons!
Marin always
Marin absolutely is the best and always will be… Lea is number two for me - a wonderful interpretation and amazing vocal quality… and Mamie would be number three…
Marin Mazzie is the best & should have won the Tony!!!!
Marin is definitive. No one comes close.....
Ms Lea Salonga ♥️♥️♥️
Marin Mazzie is number one by far!
1) Marin 2) Christiane 3) Lea (Should be #2, but she doesn't quite have the belt), 4) Mamie, 5) Maria (I really want to like her performance, but I don't like her vocal cadence) 6) Rosalie
All comparisons are invidious.
This role will always belong to the incomparable Marin
Laura Michelle Kelly also kills it, but no one will hold a candle to Marin.
Lea Salonga! She should record this song.
She does!
Overall Interpretation = LEA SALONGA, hands down!
She's so talented!!
Lea Salonga's shading and subtly did the trick for me!
Marin, Christianne, Lea
LEA SALONGA!!!!!!!
Her performance is amazing!!

So we're all just ignoring the fact that Lea, an asian woman is playing a white woman in a show that is literally about race... and white privilage...
