Hi antsvienna,don't worry,both my colonies' and wild workers of lasius flavus have these black spots,I think they might be some type of organ but don't worry it's all normal,also btw great video!
Congrats on your new Queen! I have had a 95% success rate in Lasius sp. (including Flavus) colony founding. Just give her a little drop of honeywater and everything will be fine ;) Workers take around 4-6 weeks to enclose for Flavus
Sometime this week i have my first ant colony arriving, its a Lasius Niger colony with 10-20 workers, thanks for showing me how amazing this hobby is and convincing me to start :)

Messor barbarus are very easy cause you only Need to give them seeds. With the first workers try to break the seeds for them. You Can find them in anthouse, they are free, you only Need to pay the trip

There are 4 posibilities: -One, is thart these black dots are MITES, parasitic mites that harm the ants, and suck their "blood". The soulucion for this problem will be, introuducing predator mites that eat the parasitic mites. -Two, is that maybe it's nothing that harm the ants. -There, is that the ants had internal desises. the soulution will be giving them some especial nectar, that make their inmune sistem stronger. -Four, is that they eat a type of food that makes their gasters look like that colour.
@@AntsVienna Ok, so the posibilities now are the number 2 and the number 3, becouse if the black dots are in the ants, they can't be mites, so I think that maybe the most acerted case is the nuber 2, and to confirm it, I had another question: do you see an encrese of deaths in the colony? if yes, the most probabole will be the option 3.
No, no increase in death numbers so far - maybe it takes some time to harm them (option 3). If they don't start dying out soon we can assume option 2 is valid. ;)
2 years ago I had lots of lasius flavus but there is no more now gust lasius Niger so I put murmica rufca there but it was a bad idea because formica said is there some how

I have them about 2 months I got them in an out world with their test tube adding only fruits like apple etc but I have problem cause they went from 9 workers to 5

I have lasius neglectus and had lasius flavus,lasius flavus had those black dots and nothing happened,...then i released them into the wild because the colony was too big

Looking forward to seeing the new setup. I myself have started noticing that a small amount of some molds my be beneficial in certain setups, both with my ants and my tarantulas.
Beautiful ants but the hardest lasius to take care of. I have a colony doing ok with around 40 workers and growing slowly, but another one has just 4 workers after 2 years
Yes, it is true that not every Queen is born equal AND this seems to be especially true about Lasius Flavus colonies. There can be huge differences in colony growth.
If the ants do not shake or twitch abnormally, those black dots would not be harmful to them. If you are still worrying about them, try to feed them with a little bit of lemons. The ants would try to kill those things on them with lemons
Yes, noticed that too. Another wild Ant - there are a couple of other Ant colonies in that area of the garden. The Lasius Flavus were so panicked too get that Brood in safety that they didn't even care to attack it😅😂

Maybe its not a Flavus nest and instead an Umbratus colony? The black ant would make sense than. But not sure, Flavus and Umbratus worker look very similar.

You do know that lasius flavus ants aren’t meant to have more than one queen ant because it could lead to queens attacking each other and getting injured and not wanting to lay eggs but I hope your colonies do well and that doesn’t happen but it might so be careful
It's actually not the Queens fighting but the workers sorting out the less productive queens. Putting them in a natural setup will give each Queen more space for herself (satelite nesting), allowing her to concentrate on laying eggs and therefore reduce the chance of the workers killing/expeling her. AntsVienna oh yes when they are in a natural setup then they will be more separated and focus more on laying eggs. I have a question, how did you combine the queens of each colony without them killing each other or the workers attacking???
@@oscarshipway2305 I didn't exactly have to "combine" them. I had the luck to find all three Queens on the same day, just a few feet away from each other. So these 3 Queens are probably sisters and have been kept together by me since the day I've caught them and found the Colony together. :)
Well, I have good news for you: They are both! Depending on how the Queens get along with each other they may fight OR not after the first workers arrive. And in this special case we have a 3 Queen, polygyne L. Flavus colony :)

Sorry to hear that - was the apple not good or so? Try feeding them only Honeywater (1/3 Honey) for the start.
You need to try feed the ants some type of meat so that the Larvae can eat to get even more workers faster
the queen needs protein to produce new workers
Adding some protein to their diet (like little precut insects) may also boost their development
I have kept sooo many colonies of lasius genera but this year was special cause i finnaly managed to caught fertilized queen lasius brunneus .

Maybe you second colony has too cold temperature and not enough protein.

Wouldn't bet on that. The Lasius Flavus were probably just so shocked they didn't care about attacking it and it didn't attack either...
I think they are mites good or bad, mites hate lemon so try some lemon and put it in the enclosure 'lemon therapy'.
