It looked like the lady that painted it! She just put herself in that beautiful gown of Catherine’s! As an American I’d never heard of ‘The Tatler’ but it is ‘aimed at high society’ at $185 a year for a subscription. I hope they get a backlash for their tasteless and disrespectful cover.

It is a thinly disguised attempt at blackface because of the whiteness highlighted underneath of her eyes. Take a much closer look at the magazine cover. In another words, it was meant to be a racist insult toward the Princess because of an earlier alledged question she had about the color of Meghan's unborn child.
That is not a portrait of Catherine 😮… that is not her face at all.
The person who painted it - is simply not a competent artist. It is truly dreadful. It is flat, badly drawn, the brush work is appalling, the composition is hopeless.
It doesn't have to be a facsimile of the subject, but it has to capture their personality or convey a particular idea. It is a facile daub.
And also an insult to the many thousands if not millions of excellent artists of the UK.

Having seen the portrait of Queen Victoria's adopted niece, it actually appears this artist has some talent, which makes her very disparaging 'portrait' of Catherine all the more insulting. She appears to have obliterated Catherine's beauty and fine features. One has to wonder why?

Well, you only have to take a look at the artist's collection called "Long Live the Queen" to see that she's not a fan of the BRF. It's a collection of portraits she painted of people who died in "race-related deaths in the UK since the coronation of Elizabeth II in 1953." My take away is that she doesn't like the BRF at all and that she believes that the late Queen was at fault for these deaths. She is a wokie.

If it's the artist's impression then it's not a portrait. A portrait should capture a true likeness. This painting does not, neck too short, shoulders hunched, face unrecognisable, it simply does not "portray" the beauty, elegance and graceful deportment of the Princess of Wales

I tend to agree with you regarding the lack of skill. To my mind the body is too long with such a small head. It looks like the subject is 8ft tall with a tiny head and face. And the face is oriental-looking, with slanted eyes. Absolutely a flop of the first water!
Poor Catherine can’t catch a break that portrait that was painted over her makes her look like she’s 105 and not even what she would look like at 105 because she’s absolutely stunning and she would be stunning then as well she looks like a old fuddy-duddy. It’s strange and looks intentional I do feel horrible for the artist because I don’t think she did anything with malice or intent and she was probably extremely proud of what she put out so I do want to say that
I watched the video of the painter discussing her painting of Catherine. She repeatedly referred to her as "Kate Middleton", "she" and "her", never by her correct name or title, not once did she say Catherine or Princess of Wales. I found that very telling.

I was lucky enough to be invited to the late Queen’s Garden Party 12 years ago and I can tell you now it was utterly magical! Standing a few feet away from Her Majesty the Queen and seeing her beautiful blue twinkly eyes was an honour and privilege I’ll take with me to my dying day.
The last time I saw her was at the NASA Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, and she was beautifully dressed in a lime-green outfit with matching hat. She had the most beautiful blue eyes and a smile that I will never forget.

Being the daughter of an Artist, feel disappointment as there are so, so many brilliant artists out there, that could have captured Catherine, Princess of Wales, real beauty, inside and out!

Oh good Lord! I have now seen the worst portrait of anyone that I’ve ever laid eyes on. There is not the remotest resemblance from head to toe. This artist turned beauty into the elementary. My opinion is this amateur “artist” painted this to deliberately insult Princess Catherine, show her low opinion of one of the most beautiful women in the world. Perhaps she’s a real fan of Markle. Who knows.

Well to be fair - she did a good enough job on the body, tiara and dress, and the hair somewhat. So not head to toe. It is a total fail on the face.
Even though The Princess of Wales has many wonderful qualities more important than beauty, it cannot be denied that she is one of the most beautiful Royals that have ever existed, and her portrait should have reflected that! If the artist doesn’t like a realistic painting of beauty, an Impressionistic painting in the style of John Singer Sargent could easily have been as beautiful as the Princess. This painting of a beautiful woman is ABSURD. She cannot even be recognized.

I have a degree in art and did Art Therapy with children in the mental hospital for years. This portrait demonstrates to me the lack of basic skills of the artist, as well as some deliberate passive aggressive behaviors. Giving this to a woman who is battling cancer is a bold slap in the face. SMH. The artist has some issues that need to be explored with a counselor. Back away from that paint brush.

I'm not an accomplished artist, but I would never take a commission to paint one of the most beloved Royal ladies if I couldn't at least make an image of likeness. The artist painted a woman who looks like lots of women, but not the woman intended. She may not have been coming from a point of unkindness, but the so called portrait is hardly kind to the gorgeous sweet woman we all know and love, Catherine Princess of Wales. ❤️🇺🇸❤️🇬🇧❤️👑👑
The cover in my opinion is horrible. I wouldn't buy the magazine with that cover. Why is it OK to darken her skin and alter her features? It's not. Imagine if the opposite were true, illustrating a black woman as white. Chaos would ensue.

Hi River, in the eighties, I attended two garden parties, one at Buckingham Palace and one at Burton Court. I met the late Queen and Prince Philip. Both days were sunny, luckily. I enjoyed the tea, which in those days was provided by Lyons. A gust of wind in the quadrangle lifted my hat, and a gentleman in morning dress helped me retrieve it! 👒 happy times!

Even the dress is a mess Joy. There is no shapely figure, the sash is odd, the tiara is crooked, she didn't even get the skin coloring right. The head is too small for this body, the whole thing is a mess. I read this artist is anti-Monarchy? If true that would explain it. Somebody needs to get their money back because they got ripped off.

I am not an artist and don't claim to know anything about the world of art. Having said that, I think the painting of Catherine is hideous - if it were a painting of a random person the artist had seen in the grocery store, I'd still think it was hideous.

Oh I used to love when the queen was still able to be astride her steed for the trooping of the colour sitting side saddle and looking so regal and beautiful in her natural authority and regality and the way she handled her mount with such an incredible ease and grace…it’s amazing how much she truly was such a huge part of my whole life that I kind of took her for granted in as much as it just seemed like she would always be there so that when she was taken the loss was all the more viscerally noticeable by her absence!! She truly was such an incredible woman, regardless of what anyone thought about anything else, you just couldn’t and can’t ever take it away from her the wholehearted and complete total, LIFELONG service that she gave of herself, many times at the expense of her own personal family relationships…she always put her country first, and did not falter even once (that I can ever recall anyway!!) I always remember the fact that the year of her enthronement Maria Callas, who I am absolutely possessed by, debuted at Covent Garden in Norma, 1952!! And during her last performances at Covent Garden as Tosca the queen and the queen mother attended her last performance, 1965…my Lord, that was when they REALLY were doing the whole glamour dressing!! The footage of the queen and her mother both arriving and going their royal box was just so spectacular…sigh…a whole different world and lifetime away. Sorry!! I’ve said too much…I got lost in my own memories. I miss them both 😔

River, a while back you did an episode on royal engagement rings and mentioned that a dear friend of yours had received an aquamarine engagement ring and you thought it was beautiful. Well I loved that idea! I was born in March and the aquamarine is my birthstone. I was recently proposed to and received an aquamarine! He of course knew of my desire and had asked me to show him some rings I liked but I did not know when he would ask or what the ring would look like. He had it made for me and proposed on bended knee. Thank you for all your episodes. You’ll never know how they affect us!

Hi River, another great video..thank you. I was invited to a Garden party a few years ago at Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh, and it was utterly lovely. Scotland's weather was kind to us on the day I attended, with not a midge in sight, and a truly magical setting. The garden at Holyrood made the event feel intimate under the imposing Salisbury Crags and even though there were thousands of attendees it was all very pleasant with a lovely buzz of excitement. We all managed to get a glimpse of the late Queen and Prince Philip, listened to lovely music, drank Elderflower cordial with lots of pretty things in it, ate delicate sandwiches etc and had a thoroughly beautiful afternoon. My lasting memory is of the Company of Archers who protect the Monarch, the genteel civility of the tradition of giving something of enjoyment to so many people, and of the gorgeous setting on a truly gorgeous afternoon... I love the heart of our country so much, its traditions and gentleness that remain steadfast, will hopefully never be dulled by the changes happening outwardly. Our core is mirrored in these events so whatever is flung at us as a Nation, and however people might try to dismantle and shame us, we know who we are, and our worth. Love your channel 😍

Princess Catherine looks a bit like an alien in that portrait.
Hanah Uzor's website shows what she is about. All her work there is of people of her own complexion, except a trio of paintings which show the Mona Lisa being superceeded by a portrait of a woman of colour. Uzor paints Catherine as an enemy. Oh yes the painting reveals itself as you say.
I have taken time to look at the portrait - and two hours later, still looking at this ghastly thing and cannot find anything of beauty in it. What a disservice to our beautiful Princess.

The "portrait" of our beloved Princess Catherine is an utter insult! The stray cat that pi$$es on my front door mat could have painted something better! 😡 Tatler should be ashamed of themselves. On a happier note, I love seeing all the cousins coming out to support Prince William. We need more of Zara, Mike and particularly Princess Beatrice (I think she's an absolutely lovely lady).

Richard Dennen did a piece on Catherine some time back and Kensington Palace insisted it taken down because it was inaccurate. It was derogatory to Catherine. Richard Dennen, the now editor of Tatler. Hence such an awful representation of our beloved Catherine who is battling cancer and probably feeling she's not looking her best after chemo. Some people are pure evil.

Such a shame that, if true, the editor would use his power of position to bully a woman that is ill, undergoing harsh treatment and attempting to maintain a balanced home life for her three young children.

I attended a Buckingham Palace Garden Party in 2010. I was allowed to take one other person. I had the immense fortune to see her dear Majesty Queen Elizabeth, but did not get close enough to meet her. The Royals and entourage sat within their own smaller enclosure to take tea. I along with others had tea in a marquee - beautiful cakes and scones I must say. Towards the end we lined up for the Queen to walk along and wave to us. It was a wonderful occasion, never to be forgotten.

Speaking as an artist. Expression is wonderful but in a portrait I think at the very least there should be the essence of your subject at the very least. I personally don’t see strength I see a timidity to her that I don’t see in Catherine.
Th Duke of Edinburgh's trip to Scotland reminds me of some of the scenery in Newfoundland, Canada where my paternal grandmother Diana Smith was born & raised during the British occupation. She was of English and Scottish descent.

The portrait has Meghan’s jawline, and Meghan’s waistline. I understand trying to understand the artist’s interpretation but I still don’t like it.

The first time I saw the image I thought they were portraying Queen Mary of Denmark. On second look it also looks like an amalgamation of Catherine and Meghan. Either way, Hannah Urzo did not do a very good likeness of Catherine. Tatler should have done better.
I disagree with River - in that I believe a portrait should be realistic and recognizable. The only way you’d know it was Catherine was the headline.
Tatler has also been known to support H&M. Hmmmm

Very glad to have been a guest at the Palace garden party as wife of a military officer. This was whilst the Queen Mother was also present. Enjoyed the band playing and the jolly ladies in the tea tent. At that time the toilets were hidden behind the bandstand and had purple toilet paper!
It was very hard to see the Queen due to her short stature but we caught glimpses of her and her husband. We took the opportunity to walk around the gardens and see the flamingoes on the lake. Taking a shortcut behind the VIP tea tent we encountered the Queen Mother accompanied by two gentlemen in waiting - I did my best to curtesy whilst avoiding some tree roots! It was a lovely day and a special memory.

You should see Ralph Heimans’ portraits of royalty. He’s a Sydneysider originally who painted the late Queen in the Coronation Theatre of Westminster Abbey. Now that man actually learned to draw and to paint, imagine! He can actually draw and paint! See the paintings for yourself online they are incredible.
I wish we had a 6 week snap election in the USA 🇺🇸! Rather than dragging it out until November. One of the flaws of our constitutional republic is our election process.

This portrait may affect the artist’s reputation; who will want her to paint another one?

Heather from Australia here. My husband and I attended a garden party way back. My husband stood next to a Beefeater and they had a great conversation about whiskey. Prince Charles came along and told my husband to get his feet behind the line. We weren’t sure if he was joking or not. Princess Diana then walked past and I wished her a happy 30th birthday. She replied “the least said about that the better”. I don’t think she was joking. It was a lovely day.

The POW painting truly looks like a junior high art project from a child practicing how to paint people. It obviously looks nothing like Catherine and I am surprised it was unveiled as some kind of true art work. For an adult to paint this and share with the world, I would be embarrassed personally.
