Great video! If buffers scare you, you can use the pin holes to screw the knife to a 2X4 and then go to the buffer. The knife is secured and you have something bigger to hold
Here I thought i was crazy for a moment and before I clicked on the video was like I swear I watched this video a while ago and apparently I did....kind of. Thanks for sharing.
Just an idea if you decide to do another video like this is to do a voice over while you are performing the task and itll save you from having to start/stop mask on/off just a thought.
Great video! Can you make a video for absolute noobs? Talking through safety practices? I sharpen knives for living and my clients would love mirror-polished knives. But from what I have heard, the airway wheels easily grab onto the knives and there have been fatalities caused by it whereby a couple of knife-makers have lost their lives. I would love to understand how to get started on this in a safe way - do the wheels move towards you or away? what speed are you running the wheels at? maybe some options on making laxen protection around it? Thank you!
@gentrycustomknives8008 good morning Matt. Hope all is well up in North country pretty chilly down here in Florida. I have a question though. Do you ever do Cryo on your stainless blades? Thanks all the best.
Dude I’m so stoked, I bought these knives from Civivi couldn’t wait to get them. Months later I started following and watching all your videos and today I see the knife the gander and I had to go a see who was the creator of those knives. Great design and they are cool.
Friend, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. I have been watching and applying your advice to my own hobby knife making for years now. While my knowledge is growing, my hearing isn't getting any better. I would love to hear you wearing a lapel mic so we don't have to listen around the echo of your shop. (Which is super cool, apparently I haven't seen one of your vids in a bit! Congrats!)
Thank you for watching! I bought a small wireless mic a few months ago and it sounded horrible ( I bought a cheapo). I will invest in a better one soon !
I'm to lazy for the extra work involved I'm only a Hobbiest in love with the Blacksmith as Fun Hobby that gives me good tools and knives that I truly haveing in my home and as gifts.
I work with three CPM S90V, S125V, Bohler m398 steels, I rub everything with my hands, remove the first risk after the grinder from the 320 belt with a 400 grit silicon carbide bar, then I go for cast iron lapping and diamond paste 14/10, 7/5, then I take a polishing machine and a felt circle with paste 7/5, remove all minor risks and leave for pasta 3/2.
Whatever i do there is always this foggy / hazard / cloudy look when i use mini girinder (rotary) It may be from the rpm. Even i use level 1 its around 2000-2500 rpm. Any advice?
Once again, great video! I struggled with this until your last video, and you showed me the right way. I don’t do many mirrors but it’s great to know how. Couple of questions: Are you going at different angles when you switch wheels (like hand sanding)? Sped up video and camera angle was hard to tell. Also I only use simple carbon steels and sand to 800, would the orange wheel benefit me enough to buy? Thanks for showing the process. Red Label should pay you, they use your videos
Yes I try to change my angles enough to see the different scratch patterns. I’d still buy the orange wheel if I was you! Red label is the best! I’m told a lot of people have bought these wheels based off my videos!
@gentrycustomknives8008 yeah I tried to but they were constantly sold out, probably due to your video😂. Ended up buying from Combat, their compounds don’t match the wheel color though
Im curious, do you only use one rake? I've wondered if it would be a good idea to get one for each wheel. I really need to get that buffer! Mine is way too fast, I dont like using it often.
Excellent info! I got the 3pc Airway kit and have tried a couple mirror polishes. My problem is rushing the hand sanding, and believing that the pink wheel can start with 400g. I'll add the extra coarse and also hand sand a bit higher. My buffer is a cheaper one but lots of power, however it's 3600 rpm and I got to say makes me a little nervous. So far no prob, but if I were to get a second buffer is the 1800ish ones better for knife polishing than 3600?

Good tip!

I've noticed on almost every knife making video I have watched, EVERYONE has a toaster oven. I'm assuming tempering?

Thank you. Love Red Label Abrasives, great selection of consistent quality and bulk pricing!
They are the best!
Step by step, lots of details. Thank you!
Thank you for watching
Great work, nice really nice results, still in love with your wooden walls of your shop. Great educational video. Lance.
Thank you!
You use muric acid does ferrous chloride work as well?
Can you get a mirror polish close to what you show in this video by hand?
Great video 👍 thank you
Thanks for watching!
Excellent job Matt appreciate it and you’re right them. Grizzly buffers are beast.
Thanks for watching!
@gentrycustomknives8008 good morning Matt. Hope all is well up in North country pretty chilly down here in Florida. I have a question though. Do you ever do Cryo on your stainless blades? Thanks all the best.
Hi. Love your videos man. This was super intresting.
Thanks for the content👍🏻
Really appreciate that! Thanks for watching
@gentrycustomknives8008 i am dabbeling allot with my blades and clean mirror is not easy.

Well that’s awesome! Thank you!

Totally understandable

Over my head lol
Thanks for addressing heat. I was wondering about that. Have you ever had any knives reach tempering temperatures?
No I haven’t but I could see it happening if you aren’t paying attention!
Whatever i do there is always this foggy / hazard / cloudy look when i use mini girinder (rotary)

The knife you worked on today how much would you sell it for? I love the angle of the blade angle?
Price Varys a lot depending on handle material used! This one is getting mammoth tusk combo scales
Is this setup appropriate for finished knives? Will they affect a good heat treatment?
Doesn’t affect heat treat if you keep the heat down
Running the knives across all those buffers does it dull or round out your plunge lines at all?
Yes it softens everything
Im curious, do you only use one rake? I've wondered if it would be a good idea to get one for each wheel.
I really need to get that buffer! Mine is way too fast, I dont like using it often.
I just use the one for all the wheels, doesn’t seem to cause any problems
Where do you find air wave buffing wheel to fit 3/4 abor shaft grinder
Red label abrasives

In my opinion I like the slower speed with more torque buffer!
@gentrycustomknives8008 thanks bud! I'm pretty new still, and your channel has been very helpful!
What exactly is this “rake” you’re referring to when cleaning the pads?

@gentrycustomknives8008Thanks man!
Have you ever thought about wearing cut resistant gloves? Buffers are sooo dangerous.
Send me a link!
Heck, PM me an address and I'll send you a couple of pr.
