I remember when I was nine or so, I printed out a pirated arrangement of this theme for my trumpet and learned it to my heart. Never thought about a piano arrangement. Well done.
Horner's command of music was on full display here in a way that was rarely seen in his later compositions. I'll gladly die on the hill of saying this score is superior to what Williams did with Star Wars. It is more nuanced and difficult to play with all those atonal chord shifts, and props to you for playing it.
Very awesome!! Translates well to piano!! Never thought I'd see Jeff Goldblum playing a Star Trek theme on the piano!! J/k...but you do look a lot like Jeff Goldblum!!
(Savannah? As in the Ga. city? My parents werev from there). Anyway, James Horner was my favourite "Star Trek" composer. I hated it when he died, but I'm glad his music still lives in the hearts and memories of others over the years.
Agreed! I miss him too, but he did soooo many scores, and it's easier to find them today than when I was a teenager pouring over discard bins of CDs in thrift stores!
@@HeyThereBrianDean I find a great many things in thrift stores no longer available at B&N for example. Found a mixed '60s CD of music and forgot to check the inside CD. It was a CD of a speech by Sen.Ted Kennedy. Gave it to a friend. Also found the 3rd book of "Myriad Universes" at another thrift bookstore.
Definitely has the skill to make this nice Like doing a quadruple backflip and ending in a cannonball though.. entertaining, spectacular, difficult, yes..but still would like to see it done properly Much much better than seeing nothing at all so thanks Great commentary and beaming out, I followed along in the book 🙂
Hello there Sir - im doing a Action Figure Review for the Masters of the Universe Origins Cobra 'Khan' action figure soon, and im working a bit of Fun pre- opening skit for it, as i do for all of my Action Figure reviews and ( Credited and linked to you - of course ) would it be ok if i used your performance there in my intro Skit ☺
That is a good first crack at it No small feat. Practice it for 6 months, make it more fluid, more silky, more effortless, more from the soul. Then re-record it. You're on the right track.
That's so great that you're going to play it! I'm a very good sight reader, but I had to drill a lot of those arpeggios. I just played through it again and remembered something - I simplified the beginning a lot - those 6 note groupings in the right hand with two notes each? Ridiculous. I just outlined the chord and rolled it back and forth - go back and listen! I would never change notes with Bach, but remember this is someone's (really good) arrangement for piano of an orchestral piece - who's to say different figuration is any better or worse? ;)
@@HeyThereBrianDean I have now pretty much got the main theme done. I can play the right hand on the percussive part but having issues playing with the left hand after a while, as I lose coordinaiton. The 6 note grouping you noted at the beginning is not pianoistic and i have been playing them with both hands to simplify and skipping the left hand altogether. The issue with the arpeggios for anyone reading is no two are alike on the left hand.... so you need to drill. .... I do appreciate you putting this up. i am now working on the Klingon Battle Theme song from the first star trek movie as I have sent a begging letter and got the sheet music. It is not that hard.
how long did it take you to master the first part in the beginning, the right hand..... very difficult percussive sound.. And 2nd, how long did it take you to master the arpeggios which for small hands is difficult...
Defo 1 of my favourite orchestral music pieces I've ever heard. Brings tears to my eyes when I hear it 😢
This video tasks me. It tasks me! And I shall watch it. And jolly well glad I did. Great job, mate. This is such a classic film score.

I'm huge trekker too. Wrath of khan music is the best. You play it awesome, thank you man !!!
This is awesome! From one trekkie-pianist to another! Great video.
Wonderful!
Thanks for posting, lovely rendition of a lovely soundtrack
Thanks Tim! I think I'm making videos for what my high school-age self would have wanted to watch.
@@HeyThereBrianDean Lol, definitely a good plan

It's so exciting. Cranking Star Trek III on vinyl as I type!
Can't beat those analog sounds in the first one though!

Ha, I usually get Rick Moranis, I consider the Goldblum as an upgrade!
Parabéns!!! Muito bom.

You're on the right track.
Or right Trek
How long does it take you to play such a difficult piece? I downloaded the sheet music today, and it is very difficult

Pretty rough there in spots. But still much appreciated video. Maybe a little practice first next time? 😉
