New Peugeot 408 2023 - VIsual OVERVIEW, exterior & interior

The all-new 2023 Peugeot 408 arrives as a stylish and sporty crossover coupe that aims to inject some excitement into the compact C-segment. Peugeot calls it a "fastback," and the sloping roofline does give it a more dynamic character compared to traditional small crossovers like the 308 SW wagon. The exterior takes inspiration from the larger 508 with its distinctive LED running light signature, frameless doors, and prominent rear haunches.
Under the hood, the 408 offers a choice of gas and diesel powertrains. The base engine is a 1.2-liter turbocharged 3-cylinder gas unit making 130 horsepower, while a more powerful 1.6-liter 4-cylinder is available with either 180 hp or 225 hp. For those who prefer diesel, Peugeot offers a 1.5-liter BlueHDi diesel rated at 130 hp. An 8-speed automatic transmission comes standard across the range.
Peugeot is aiming for an upscale vibe inside the cabin, using high-end materials and the latest version of its i-Cockpit interior layout. This includes a standard 10-inch infotainment touchscreen angled towards the driver. The digital instrument cluster is also 10 inches, and buyers can opt for massaging front seats. Generous standard equipment includes dual-zone climate control, wireless phone charging, and multiple USB ports.
Ride quality should impress thanks to the 408’s EMP2 platform that also underpins models like the 3008 and 5008 SUVs. Peugeot engineers increased rigidity while reducing weight compared to previous platforms. Safety technologies include standard forward collision warning with autonomous emergency braking, lane keeping assist, and traffic sign recognition.
While compact crossovers usually focus on practicality, the 408 positions itself as an emotionally styled alternative for buyers wanting something more exciting. The sloped rear roof does limit rear headroom and cargo space, but Peugeot believes the tradeoff is worth it for the distinctive exterior. If the success of the larger 508 is any indication, Peugeot could have another hit on its hands.
The 2023 Peugeot 408 goes on sale in Europe this summer with prices starting around €25,000. We’ll have to wait and see if Peugeot brings its new fastback crossover stateside to take on the likes of the Volkswagen Taos and Hyundai Kona. But with its bold styling and premium interior, the Peugeot 408 looks ready to shake up the compact crossover segment.
