As much as Dark Souls 2 destroyed the mystery of linking the fire or abandoning it, seeing it reflected in King Vendrick's failure and arrogance was something to behold. I've always loved stories of Kings who try to do what's best for their people, but in the end become villains, fallen heroes, insane, or haunted by the actions they had to commit. Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown.
