Piccadilly Gardens was still a nice place in the early '90s. Hot summer days especially the gardens would be full of people sunbathing at lunchtime, eating chatting and relaxing. Yeah there was the odd drunk or beggar but they were nowhere near as prolific as today. I lived in Manchester 1990-200 worked at the City Road Inn opposite the Hacienda 1991-93. Now when I go back it's like going to London, all skyscrapers and coffee shops and homeless spiceheads being ignored by the normal people. Nowhere else I know is the Victorian wealth gap between rich and poor so obvious and in your face. Horrible place now. Sad.

Every time I watch your videos I'm transported back in time to my childhood in nearby Stockport, where I witnessed the end of an era before the slum clearances and the end of the steam train era with all the soot stained decaying properties. My primary school was over a hundred years old then. Your videos are so atmospheric and reminiscent of those days Ant, thank you for another trip down memory lane.
I was born in Manchester, my parents came to live out in NZ in 1952 In the 70's as a young girl I came back to live in Manchester to discover where I came from, my Grand father who was in his 70's the same age I am now, took me all over Manchester telling me things of his childhood, a Manchester before cars and planes etc I used to work in Piccadilly and eat my lunch in those beautiful gardens, it was the most beautiful place in the middle of the city. This fine city is steeped in history and to a lot of people like me have no clue about a lot of it's history, so am really enjoying watching and learning more about the plant a I have for the last 67 years. So I am working through the videos you have done and am not sure yet if you have done any on the area in Ancoats that was/is known as Little Italy. Am not Italian myself, my Dad was from the Ukraine although my Dad did work as a printer in The Daily Express building which is in is near Little Italy but is no longer there and also the one that was at The Printworks. Anyway please do more stuff on Manchester, am sure there is a lot more history to be found.
If you want anymore ideas to do your videos on just let me know, but am sure you have a few lined up. Looking forward to watching your next video. Oh my daughter has found your videos on Angel Meadows absolutely fascinating, she had no idea the history of it. When she was 13 or so she use to hang around the Urbis and then go drinking in Angel Meadows. Yeah she was a little shit now but she has grown up now and got herself sorted. Nice work my friend. As a child of the 1960's, I remember Piccadilly Gardens well into the 1970's when it was a Garden, clean and well kept. I used to sit on the benches with my Grandfather, as my Grandmother went shopping in Lewis's (now Primark) on a Saturday afternoon. The Primark building itself has a huge history, they even used to flood the basement (when Lewis's) to create an ice rink or similar, if my memory serves. Please carry on with these documentaries, they are superb.

Thanks once Again Anthony for a great video and telling us more about the History of Manchester being a Born and bread Mancuin myself there is still a lot of history that i don't know about. But watching your videos is giving me a Education about my Hometowns history. Keep up the great work.

I really enjoyed this one, and you are right about Piccadilly Gardens. Every time I walk past I think , what on earth were they thinking of?! Keep the vids coming Ant!
Thank you for bringing our forgotten history back to life .
This is an amazing piece of cinematography and such empathetic story. A beautiful and haunting piece

3 very interesting stories and so sad ,that poor family and what a monster he was ,jeepers times were hard for women back then and yes people should know the history of their town and just remember thoes without a head stone who build these cities ,you should be brought in to the schools to teach the children about this subject as you have such a knowledge, compassion, and deep respect for your content ,love your channel and until the next one take care 🎉
Great comment.
Brilliant mate, keep up the good work.
Another great programme Anthony. I'd forgotten all about the murders at Mother Mac's even though I was living in Fallowfield at the time. Anyway, as I often say, you're production values are brill, and I love listening to your accent...the sound of my childhood and adolescent years. I hope this find you well and life treating you and yours kindly. All the best mate.....
Thank you so much Mike! Really glad you enjoyed it mate! Haha it never leaves you this accent does it. I’m very well thank you mate and I hope you are too buddy! Take care 👍🏼

Great video. I am a proud Mancunian, bor. In 1960 I have seen many changes I cluding the redevelopment on Piccadilly Gardens. Manchester used to care about its people especially the poor working class, I was one of those!
@@StuartLomas cheers for the comment Stuart. Manchester sadly seems to be loosing touch with its deeply history roots. Let’s hope there’s a change in the future
i remember st andrews church when i was a kid i lived in ardwick flats literally round the corner from there.
Oh wow. What a documentary - absolutely beautifully made, I can't remember when I watched something so well made. I can't wait to explore Manchester more now and see some of these places! 🎉🎉🎉
@@white91561 thanks so much mate! Really glad you enjoyed it 👍🏼⭐️
Do you ever do guided tours in and around Manchester?
@@white91561 I don’t unfortunately but it’s something I would like to do in the future. I do know a couple of great tour guides if you ever wanted to visit some locations.
I absolutely love anything on Manchester whether it be bodies like yours or TV of that have used Manchester as the location.
Anyway, keep up the good work young man 👍

DM again your content on these videos has given me goosebumps. I don’t know much about Manchester but when I visit I always think back to the your videos and the Scuttlers and Angel Meadows. You should get a job at the history museum as a storyteller. Breathtaking. Well done pal.

Thanks for yet another haunting video. You have no idea how good you are. The saddest story for me was the church. The massacre and the dunkings were horrific, but the church brought tears to my eyes. History destroyed. 😢
Aww thanks so much Mandy! That really is very kind of you to say. Yeah, hard to imagine that these things went on isn’t it. Your support is much appreciated as always! 🙏🏼
Fantastic production again! Thank you

I used to work around the corner from the Mac, had the odd drink there, only recently learned about the sad event there.
@@asfcboys6317 yeah it’s tragic mate. A real act of evil. It’s recently been taken over and renamed the Rat & Pigeon
Piccadilly Gardens was beautiful!
I moved to the south coast in the 90’s and lived there for over 20 years.
I remember it very well from the early 60’s and it was a gorgeous place.
I was totally shocked when I returned in 2011!!!
Its decline, was apparent.
Very interesting vlog,, thank you xx

As always such a well produced piece of work .
@@markbooth1117 thanks so much mark. Great to hear you remember the gardens as they were. I just can’t fathom why they have let it get to how it is now. Thanks so much for watching mate!
I stumbled across your channel last night and despite being in work all day I'm already on my third documentary 👍

ABSOLUTELY brill as ever Ant 👌🏻👌🏻 I heard or read somewhere, the old piccadilly gardens, how it was sunken in, was because it had been the cellars/underground/mortuary section of the hospital there!🤷🏼♀️ Not sure if this is so, cos I'm sure you would've mentioned it, the research you do. Top one Ant anyway. Worth waiting for again ☺️ xx
It wouldn’t surprise me Tina! Nothing does anymore 😂 there’s so much history and horrible stories to uncover I can’t keep up! 😂 thanks for watching 🙏🏼
