Wow. I spent 10 minutes trying to pull the lock cylinder out of the housibg... it was a leap.of faith at 7:20, pull the damn key, it said right out! Thanks bud
My 21yo Focus just started having this issue. Took my wife 5 minutes to get the thing to turn today. Luckily this 'fix' will get us by until a new ignition cylinder comes in.
Thanks, huge help man! This video could likely get condensed down to a quick minute. I used liquid wrench lubricating oil spray and doused the key hole about 5 long times while shaking and jiggling the key and it finally turned, so i could push that pin and remove lock cylinder without drilling. Big back clip with pliers and remove the key to pop the inner cylinder out. Tumbler cover, tumblers and springs out, back together and good to go! 🎉❤ Got an 04 focus with 155k miles going again in about the time it would have taken to call the locksmith and get charged 5x.
Pro Tip: Snap ring pliers work well for the ring removal, but keep it contained upon removal because if it slips off the pliers under load it will launch the ring and you will spend 10 minutes looking for it. No flesh lost though....
I saw your video my problem was the same as yours, I decided to disassemble the plastic parts to have access to the ignition and with a hammer I gave small blows and it solved my problem, I suggest that before removing the ignition do this process too
You can also try soaking the keyhole opening with WD-40 and with the key inserted lightly tap it with a rubber mallet a few times, it should unlock the tumblers inside the cylinder. Did it recently on a friend’s car.
I did that and it worked for awhile. But my 2002 has almost 300k on it and I guess the tumblers and/or key was worn too much. Wife got stuck at the grocery store so she didn't trust it anymore... So bye bye tumblers!
Ford sells a cylinder kit with numbered tumblers you can make match your sequence of 7 total 4+3 Makes it like new and don't not need Ford or a locksmith. Here is the proper way to do it. NO DECODER - 2007 Ford Focus - Key Won't Turn - Ignition Key Cylinder Replacement - RUclips
Do You Need to "Re-Program" New Keys? Where? Ford Dealership? I've Had Car 6 Months. Key Never Went in Sm👀thly, Always Had to Jam It In. Finally, It Completely Locked Up on Me & Won't Budge!! What Do I do? Buy Replacement Kit? $100+ DIY? Plus, I Have to Get New Keys 🔑🔑 "Chipped"? Or Just Squirt WD-40?
With this method, the key is only activating the transponder in the steering column to unlock the car's electronics. The key can even be mounted the inside steering column so that the transponder is always keeping the ignition unlocked. You could turn the ignition with anything at that point (which means anyone else could too). I prefer still using the key for that minimum amount of security. No reprogramming needed, this just costs a little time.
Are ford focus's even worth having? I recently got one and it seems like there is always another ignition issue popping up, and one of my door either won't shut or will pop open while I drive...it's almost starting to seem like I shouldn't keep it?
I haven't heard of the issue where the door will not latch correctly. I have 184k miles on my 2002 focus and it's got a handful of issues, but overall it has been cheap to own per year average. The problem I have with the passenger door handle is the opposite than what you describe. And my older brother had almost an identical Focus to mine with the same exact door latch problem. What it is: you pull the handle, but the door doesn't open because the latch is sticking closed. The solution is pushing the door in before you pull the handle. works every time. My older brother never believed me but he's wrong lol. he just kept ripping on the door untill it opened. =( My suspension needs a full rebuild, but it's not like it is horrible to drive. I suspect that I have a significant loss of power but I can't figure out what is causing it or if it actually does have a loss of power in the first place. I'm pretty sure the one I bought was in a wreck so the driver side mirror was broken off and they glued it back on, and the driver side switch for the passenger window doesn't work. but those things are from the wreck most likely. I have quite a lot of engine vibration because the engine mounts go out after a while, especially the right side (which you can't even order anymore except for crappy aftermarket versions that blow out in a few months... aka Anchor brand. ) other than that. half the exhaust hangers have broken, so I have like 2 metal clothes hangers holder my exhaust pipe up. Rust/corrosion has eaten through the exhaust so it smells horrible (maybe it's also the CAT?) Oh well. I bought a 2021 Camry TRD and have mostly enjoyed it. But I still drive my Focus when it snows or any time I want to blast the 1200 watt sub system i put in it =P JBL & skar audio representing baby

This 100% works. I just did it to my focus and couldn't be happier with the results. Didn't cost me a dime either and for that, I thank you.
I'm glad it helped you out!

Will it drain your battery while driving since the key pops slightly out after starting?
It shouldn't, as long as your return the switch to its normal position after turning it off.

Mine died not too long after this video. Blown engine at 140k. I'm not going to buy another one, although the new ST's seem nice.
