Rock-a-Doodle Featurette (Part 1/2)

  • This badly-edited and loosely structured featurette may be one of the only making-ofs in existance for one of Don Bluth's weakest and least-known films, "Rock-a-Doodle", made in 1990. The complicated story was based on the Chanticleer folk tales and originally developed by Disney, but Walt Disney rejected a pitch for an animated version, believing the folk tales were too difficult to translate to the screen. Here, Bluth adds a new twist to the folk tales, making Chanticleer an Elvis-style Rock-and-Roll singer after leaving the farm.
    This part concentrates on working with Toby Scott-Ganger (the kid who plays Edmond), the difference between live-action and animation directing (this was Don Bluth's first and only stab at live-action), the importance of recording voice-artists first before animating, the songs in this film and a recording session with singer Glen Campbell (the voice of Chanticleer) for an alternate version of the finale. You'll even find cels from his previous flop "All Dogs Go to Heaven" being prepared here.

    6:45 - 7:38
    The ending would have worked out better like that, there needed to be a scene with Chanticleer and Edmond interacting. I guess they didn't like the blue screen and cut it out or something.

    You can say this movie is a mess, and you'd be right, but you can't say it's a rehash of anything. And nowadays when so many animated movies feel so unremarkable and predictable in terms of story and design that you can guess the whole plot from the trailers, I'd honestly welcome a nice, unique hot mess of a movie like this one.

    @PolyBrow
    And THEN he died. Seriously, the original director of live-action had terminal lung cancer, which is why Don directed the live-action himself.

    I agree with you PolyBrow, "Rock-a-Doodle" isn't a "bad" film at all, and I personally don't think it's Don Bluth's worst movie ever. It just isn't strong, the story is lacking in a few areas, the characters (live action and animated) are moderately defined, and this was Don's first time directing live actors outside of an animation studio. This movie came out in 1992, the same year another weakly executed live action/animated film came out: Ralph Bakshi's "Cool World."

    at 5:30 - 6:00 pm on sundays in the early to late nineties. They only screened about 8 minutes of the featurette back in January 1992.(it was released in Australia in December 1991)

    So what made them think Glen Campbell would be the best choice for Chanticleer? And why did Ellen Green use her Audrey voice for Goldie? Her Dolly Gopher would have been better. Still, I believe that Ronnie McDowell and Goldie Hawn as Chanticleer and Goldie would have yielded the best result. Who else agrees?
    Judging that recording, that could have been from a previous draft of the film.

    I love bluth's work, but not everything he did was a home run. this included. I didn't even bother to see it because it seemed like a corny title, and then the elvis reference cemented that I would never see this movie. elvis was long gone when this film was made, the fan base just wasn't there for the kids at that time.

And his review on Rock-A-Doodle still remains as my strongest disagreement with him. This is actually a good movie, not a masterpiece but its quite a fun movie. The kind of movies Don Bluth makes are hard to understand at first but actually make more sense if you put your mind to it. They're kinda like kids' movies at an advanced level.

    • @gabe_s_videos
      @gabe_s_videos 10 лет назад +2

      Yes and no. He stopped making films after that, but he's been doing other things, like teaching animation and directing theater (ironic, considering how much he said he hated doing live action here). Apparently, despite his love of the craft, he didn't like the business or the competition. Apparently after he got fried from Fox, he said something to the effect of "Never again will I draw a character and hand the rights over to someone else, which pretty much puts me out of the business." By the sound of it, he doesn't seem to want to make a comeback.
