I have had other bikes but I'm going to keep the DR forever. Good luck. Ps. Change the fork springs out, the OEM ones are too soft, you'll thank me for it.

I have an '06 S I bought new. I used it as an enduro for about 10 years then I just bought some used OEM SM wheels and it's still going. It's pretty amazing. ACT makes a wide ratio gear set which fixes that gearing "dual sport compromise" issue but it's about $6-700. I'd like it to be FI but I can live with it. After many awesome years I 470'd it and it still makes me smile. I do have a new 500exc which did replace it off-road wise but I don't ride the KTM like a dual sport, I just use it to connect trials, too much wrench time to just ride it around and bald up expensive tires. The DRZ is still my bitch. And since I can ride and I'm athletic, I can still out ride wannabe KTM bros on it LOL. Biggest variable is the rider, fix that before you spend 12g 💪
The KTM is a commitment but worth what you put into it, kind of like a hard relationship LOL. The DRZ will always be there but there are things she won't do, but she doesn't expect of you what she won't do for you, a "fair deal." I work on my KTM probably something like 5 minutes for every hour of riding, the DRZ probably like 1 minute for every hour of riding. The KTM isn't any less reliable it just takes more maintenance to keep it working right so I only use it where it's meant to be. Some people just supermoto it and check valves every 2 weeks, I ain't about that life, if I'm adjusting valves and changing oil every two weeks, I'm going to be doing some legendary riding. I'll probably still have the DRZ when I replace the KTM. It just works and there's like no risk buying a used one because they are relatively forgiving concerning neglect.
This was absolutely wild! I live about 5 minutes from most of where you were riding here. Never thought I'd see someone roll into big citgo on youtube! I just got an old DRZ recently and was wondering where the offroad areas you were riding? front of the mountain area, or mostly over the border?
Which seat do you have on the DRZ? I know what you mean about the clock I still haven't figured out how to set it. Your getting good at those wheelies!
I went down from the 44 T stock rear to a 41 aluminum sprocket and shortened the chain. Much better road manners for me and eats less gas at maintaining higher speeds. I still climb 5k feet of dirt mountain double track with this set up no problem and cruse at 72MPH on the HWY home.

I have a 15 tooth front, 39 rear. To me it's perfect . 75 on the freeway no prob.. great for logging roads and medium off roading.if I wanted more low end torque..just change the front sprocket..easy
I did the 3x3 recently and hold my beer, what a difference! But how much did you shim the needle? I added some washers on top of the stock nylon shim but I feel like it's running too rich now. Same elevation range as you but was unsure about the shimming part..
I live in a state where wearing a helmet is an option, now we all know wearing a helmet is the ultimate safest option. I wear mine always for various reasons but it's a choice, as is riding gear !! I see a lot of comments on improper wear of it. The people that wear it know or have experienced first hand reasons that you should!! For the rest the law has to change or they have to have an eye opening experience or awakening for this to happen until this happens why preach a message to someone that doesn't want to hear it !!! Live and let live and maybe one day they get that awakening and it won't be so costly!!!
Thanks for the video mate been waiting for this review since you got the bike. I'm going to buy one in a few weeks can't wait. Love your vids keep up the great work! Appreciation from AUS
Thanks Mate or Sheila! Please let me know how you like it when you get it.. what you like and dislike about the bike etc... I do love the DRZ400, it is the perfect all around bike for me.
Yeah no shit man all people have to say about them are great things! I'm getting a brand new 2018 model next saturday i cant wait :) do you guys know if there's any changes between the 2018 and the 2019 models ? i know they haven't changed in years but cant find any info on 2018/2019 if anythings different. thanks.
Not really, the front forks (and rear shock) on the SM are very stiff and lower seat height. I've tried a few, the S has more motocross soft long travel ride.
Love your videos! What are your thoughts comparing it to your crf250l? I’m always on the fence whether I should have bought the drz over the Honda. Big difference?
@@MotoCheez the WR250 is much better as far as 250 bikes go. That thing will whoop a drz off the line. Everyone I've heard says the crf is a huge disappointment. Even the crf450l is a disappointment from what I understand.
@@louiewatson9389 my WR250R is same 0 to 60 time after both modded slightly and both geared down slightly. They're real close TBH I think because the WR has 6 speed
I rented the 250l and it’s so fun. But I’m 220lbs. It’s not enough power for the mountains where I live. I got me up the mountains but it was screaming in 1st just to do it. I don’t like Reving that hard. I like to lug the bikes.
What is this 3x3 mod thing? Can I do this to my DRZ400 E?! My carb is a 39... thank you very much! and by the way, I have a Leovince X3...is there any powerbomb for this??
@@MotoCheez checked all of them except rear wheel alignment. the lines on the chain adjusters were identical so im assuming its okay. im thinking maybe its tires. my tires have a few knobbies about to come off in the front tire
Have you ridden a wr250r before and if so how would you compare it? I recently bought a slightly used 2015 wr250r with low miles and while i love it, I'm just wanting more power on the street. I like the low weight, 6 gears and fi though...if only they made it in a 400, 450. I heard it was more performance oriented than the other 250 in the japanese class
we got a couple of these at a dealership, I keep looking at them. I like how simple they are, having owned DR600's many years ago. What sort of price would you pay for one? we got them advertised at £5400:00 which probably isnt too bad
@@MotoCheez I might go see them and wave a couple of hundred less under thier nose. Both bikes have been there a very long time. Watching your vid re handguards, you can get some quite neat ones that have little flip out mirrors. Not sure where they sell from, my brother had some fitted on his KTM
@@MotoCheez true, did you ever fit a larger fuel tank? giving this bike some serious thought. Tempted with the latest Yamaha Tenere 700 but the DR is like half its price.
I didn't go with a larger tank, trying to keep it.light got the trails. I see they have a few for this bike though. The 700 must be a tank on the trails. Depends what kind of riding you're doing I guess
Looking to buy a new dual sport since I'll be trading my Versys 300. This seems to be the best for what I want. I was nervous to buy new when the bike is 18 years old. Hopefully it's the right choice.
Watch out PETA getcha for scaring them cows. Nice dueling banjos, in right place for someone to jump out and say "he got a pretty mouth, ain't he". Have no fear, cheez man on a DRZ, cant catch him & make him squeal like a pig. 😁
Yeah I hear you, the used ones are getting the same price as new. I just got a Vitacci Bashan Raven 250 yesterday that I will be putting a video up soon, not too expensive like hawk. Review coming soon
I have an ‘07 drz400sm with full FMF exhaust, a cylinder works 434 big bore kit, stage 2 hot cams (intake and exhaust), and a keihin fcr 41mm carb. It pulls harder than my buddies WR 450 lol. They make soo many mods for those bikes and they are unbelievably dependable.
Yeah an fcr 39mm carb on your bike would be a night and day difference! The stock carb is too restrictive and doesn’t do the bike any justice. On the DRZ400-E models they came with better cams and a 39mm carb. If you don’t plan on changing your bore, I would just go with the E cams!
My 15 has a 3.2 ims 3x3 and full powerbomb system. I have no other plans on mods because it’s just good! I would have gone with a wr250r but I wanted to be a DRZ bro :)

@@mogulin_da_skies7516 it really depends on what type of riding you want to do. A light 250 is awesome on the trails, I have over 10 bikes and my DRZ is fun, but it's a different type of riding, faster, jumps etc. If you like trails a 250 is fun!
wow what a great video and a true professional making it. Wheelies, top speed tests, off road tests, hes done it all and with no type of riding safety gear on too. Shorts, tee shirt, tennis shoes, no gloves, so why wear a helmet????
DRZ grandfathered in so they don't have to meet current EPA regs. Also, they can't really do any other updates to the bike, otherwise they'd have to go thru the long and expensive re-certfication process as a new bike. That's why it's unlikely you'll ever see a DRZ upgrade of any kind.

I'm north of new Milford, this was an awesome place, it's closed up tight now since they redid the roads in the lines
Very Cool ..If you see a black Triumph Street Srcambler and an old guy up at Toy Makers its me ... Please say hello ... I have a pottery shop in Bantam so stop by any time .. I have a 29 " inseam so I dont think I could ride the DRZ 400 but it is the bike I would get for our part of the world ... Have you tested the Hymalian in Kent yet .. ?? ALL THE BEST , GUy
Nice. I'll stop when I'm up that way for sure.
Awesome review, and awesome cat! :D
Thanks!!
That’s awesome!!
I have a 15 tooth front, 39 rear. To me it's perfect . 75 on the freeway no prob.. great for logging roads and medium off roading.if I wanted more low end torque..just change the front sprocket..easy
You say that like changing the rear is hard..
I did the 3x3 recently and hold my beer, what a difference! But how much did you shim the needle? I added some washers on top of the stock nylon shim but I feel like it's running too rich now. Same elevation range as you but was unsure about the shimming part..
Only one small washer, it doesn't take much
@@MotoCheezOk cool, thanks for the help! Keep up the awesome vids!
@@dukeofdaily2091 thanks!
No helmet law here either. But I do wear it!
I got one about a year ago. Awesome bike, I knew it would be good though from all the praise its got and how popular they are.
Yeah no shit man all people have to say about them are great things! I'm getting a brand new 2018 model next saturday i cant wait :) do you guys know if there's any changes between the 2018 and the 2019 models ? i know they haven't changed in years but cant find any info on 2018/2019 if anythings different.
thanks.
Nothing changed that I know of.
thanks mate i will defiantly be picking up the 2018 because i much prefer the black and gold color scheme over white and blue !
Look like you're having fun I'm thinking about buying the DRZ400S
My favorite bike ever, and I've owned a lot of bikes!
great bikes for the money! tho the SM does come with some great Showa twin chamber 47mm forks which could be worth it for heavy off road use!
Not really, the front forks (and rear shock) on the SM are very stiff and lower seat height. I've tried a few, the S has more motocross soft long travel ride.
@@MotoCheez keep the s wheels and back the clickers out. you would be surprised
Ahh yes the bigger wheels probably do make a difference, didn't think of that
Love your videos! What are your thoughts comparing it to your crf250l? I’m always on the fence whether I should have bought the drz over the Honda. Big difference?
Huge, the CRF was a little disappointing to be honest....
@@louiewatson9389 yes the CRF I had was disappointing for sure
I rented the 250l and it’s so fun. But I’m 220lbs. It’s not enough power for the mountains where I live. I got me up the mountains but it was screaming in 1st just to do it. I don’t like Reving that hard. I like to lug the bikes.
How do you like that exhaust tip I was thinking about picking one up for mine
I’m up in your state as well, you ride through the state forest as well? I’m usually in the portland south Glastonbury forest. Be safe peace
I haven't been there, my son has. Waiting on the nice weather!!
Wheelies looking at a sm version right now . Nothing can be funner on two wheels unless you do it one wheel.
What is this 3x3 mod thing? Can I do this to my DRZ400 E?! My carb is a 39... thank you very much!
and by the way, I have a Leovince X3...is there any powerbomb for this??
3x3 us a 3" square hole in your airbox. Usually with a rejet like in video. I believe I saw a power bomb for these.
The Leovince X3 is not god?
sick video :)
Who cares what he does and doesn't wear guys. His road rash not ours. Get over it guys.
👍👍😁
MotoCheez 😁👍🏻👍🏻
what would be a good price for a drz400 with like 2k miles?
What year? They're getting over 4500 for old ones with high mileage.
Excellent video and information! :-)
Thanks!😁
i have a drz400e and it feels very unstable at speed, any help?
Check swingarm bushings and wheel bearings? Rear wheel alignment? Tire pressure and tires good?
@@MotoCheez its on dirtbike tires not DOT so id have to assume tires could be a factor. but ill check other things .
@@MotoCheez checked all of them except rear wheel alignment. the lines on the chain adjusters were identical so im assuming its okay. im thinking maybe its tires. my tires have a few knobbies about to come off in the front tire
Could be it!
So many mods that’s where they get you foooook
Have you ridden a wr250r before and if so how would you compare it? I recently bought a slightly used 2015 wr250r with low miles and while i love it, I'm just wanting more power on the street. I like the low weight, 6 gears and fi though...if only they made it in a 400, 450. I heard it was more performance oriented than the other 250 in the japanese class
Yes, the WR250 is fastest 250 dualsport I've ever ridden, but the DRZ400 is faster and a lil heavier.
Love my 2018 great bikes
👍👍👍
Wrong about the DR650 counter balancer. In 96 through current model it is gear driven.
Didn't realize it was that long ago
@@MotoCheez time flies when you are having fun, on motorcycles.
@@larryperez6828 haha. I guess so! Been riding over 40 years 😁😁😂🤣
we got a couple of these at a dealership, I keep looking at them. I like how simple they are, having owned DR600's many years ago. What sort of price would you pay for one? we got them advertised at £5400:00 which probably isnt too bad
That sounds about right, they hold their value pretty good, reliable and solid built so they hold up well.
@@MotoCheez I might go see them and wave a couple of hundred less under thier nose. Both bikes have been there a very long time. Watching your vid re handguards, you can get some quite neat ones that have little flip out mirrors. Not sure where they sell from, my brother had some fitted on his KTM
Sweet, yeah I have a set of those mirrors on my moped believe it or not lol. Nice thing about these big mirrors as you could see good on the road
You in the conneticut area? Feel like i recognize it alot i live on the mass conn corder.
Yes, I'm in CT
I knew I recognized the roads
😁😁😁👍👍🔥
Looking to buy a new dual sport since I'll be trading my Versys 300. This seems to be the best for what I want. I was nervous to buy new when the bike is 18 years old. Hopefully it's the right choice.
I felt the same way, once I rode one I fell in love! I've had dozens of bikes over the years and the DRz400 is my fav!
Had to stop watching when I saw the cat.... I mean, video was fine, but it was over so... like I had to stop watching it. Lol ride safe man
😄👍👍👍 thanks
Dude if you wanna make the drz 400 go faster, then change the chain, suspension, and shift your gears!
Why would changing the suspension make you go faster
These two bikes look normal to me I'm not understanding the same bikes with smaller Wheels or why I'm even seeing them with the smaller Wheels
Usually the smaller wheels are more for the road, like supermoto
@@MotoCheez ahh not that it's a different bike but you can get it both ways
Look for the crosstraining enduro vid of them on a dr650, they ride that pig like trials bike ha ha
Watch out PETA getcha for scaring them cows. Nice dueling banjos, in right place for someone to jump out and say "he got a pretty mouth, ain't he". Have no fear, cheez man on a DRZ, cant catch him & make him squeal like a pig. 😁
😂😁😁😅
I want a hawk but can’t find one near tn
DLX or original carbureted?
@@MotoCheez original dlx be awesome but I’m on a tight budget lol
Yeah I hear you, the used ones are getting the same price as new. I just got a Vitacci Bashan Raven 250 yesterday that I will be putting a video up soon, not too expensive like hawk. Review coming soon
@@MotoCheez I was gonna get one of those but was trying to find a used one so I didn’t have to wait, where do you order yours from
TXpowersports, they give a Motocheez discount, a few bucks off using Motocheez at checkout
Where do you get the black plastics and graphics kits
They came stock on my bike, but acerbis has the plastics and I've seen graphic kits online.
Did you remove the rubber boot from the front forks?
I bought it that way, I installed the fork boots a few days later.
DRZ400 is outstanding...
Highly recommendable bike!
Nice video bro.
👍👍👍 TY
It's a steal!!!
I want to do the carb and cams eventually. Awesome
@@Pyroguy410 I've heard that! That's what I want to do

Thank you! 32 horsepower @ 7,850 rpm
24 foot-pounds @ 6,750 rpm

Measured top speed: 94.1 mph
1/4 mile-13.66 sec. @ 88.32 mph

@@MotoCheez man that's all ? My rmz 250 was rated around 30hp ? Why is the drz400 so weak , I mean I want one but just curious
It's tuned that way for longevity on the road and emissions. Add an FCR carb and you get over 10 additional hp.
@@MotoCheez ah that makes sense
I'm doing an FCR carb this summer! 😁

Excellent review! realistically honest!
Thanks!
How much HP does it have? Here in Europe we have only 40 hp Models on the SM.
I believe it's the same, like 38hp..
@MotoCheez So they didnt change anything with the engine or the carb?
Nope! Crazy, right? Needs EFI!
I think its honestly rocking about 25hp to the rear tire if you dyno it.
I have a guy who lives in CT I got to know from my videos that actually put his on a Dyno and it was 32hp. I was shocked too instagram.com/p/Bo_mofLFX3O/?igshid=rwso4o330x7t
I think the cat needs more recognition and maybe a drz.

heres some money for a badazz drz400 review 💰💰💰💰💰💰💰

What are your plans for Dumpy, my family and I enjoy the builds, and we're trying to find a reputable dealer for them here in Colorado
Dumpy is going to be a work truck since he's a dump truck. So a lift, a winch etc , maybe an OD green paint job, nothing crazy
Awh, what no flame job,lol still would like to see how you would mount the plow assembly, so Maybe we'll be able to work it
Ya. plow I may do!
This bike is not selling anymore in spain since 2006, all used models are very demanded. Please Suzuki... send back us this jewel again¡¡¡
There is thounsands of bikers with hunger of easy offroad after have payed 22.000 € for his 1200 gs.
Is it because it's carburetor? What's the reason?

I can't decide between the S or SM
I like the S because it's such a soft ride, but it is taller. If you plan on offroading, a bit, I'd say S.
Thanks for the reply. I'd love to become a better rider off road to be a better one on.
Do it, it's a lot of fun!
depends on whAt you'll be primarily doing IMO. If off-road, get the S. It has softer suspension and is higher. SM if you're on road mostly.
You are going to change my mind about Honda cfr250l
😁😁😁
crf250l is a good beginners bike. Wr250r or drz400 are way more bike.
Agreed! Ktms badass too
For someone who has rode motorcycles but not dirt bikes , should I start on a 250 or will I get bored quick ? Trying to decided on the 400 or the 250 l
@@mogulin_da_skies7516 it really depends on what type of riding you want to do. A light 250 is awesome on the trails, I have over 10 bikes and my DRZ is fun, but it's a different type of riding, faster, jumps etc. If you like trails a 250 is fun!
i wonder how reliable those ACT gears are

wow what a great video and a true professional making it. Wheelies, top speed tests, off road tests, hes done it all and with no type of riding safety gear on too. Shorts, tee shirt, tennis shoes, no gloves, so why wear a helmet????
Haha. Thanks. Hmm, should I drop the helmet?? 😁
I didn’t even know they still even made dirt bikes with carbs anymore
Ashton Lanier you'd think EPA would have gotten them all!
Ahh. That makes sense, good ole NHSTA.
I'm so jealous. I need to grab one of those one of these days.
I love it
DO IT!
