I think the fact that he hit the winning drop-goal off his wrong foot is the most under-stated part of the legend. The man was a freak.

I was working in a warehouse doing the annual stock take when this was on. We could only listen to it on the radio, but for the last 15 minutes, everyone just stopped working and listened. Even the boss of the entire logistics division stopped and listened and when we heard Wilko score that drop goal, everyone went nuts.

true. They won the 2003 world Cup the same way South Africa won the last World Cup. Physical intimidation. The entire pack were beasts. And the backs were full of hard men as well - Tindall, Robinson, Wilkinson, Greenwood

Such a good game. Not even really a rugby fan but what a match and what a finish. You still hear even from Aussie fans how good a match it was, even with the disappointment of losing a final. Just an electrifying finish, like time slowed for a moment.

yes it took the aussies by surprise, but, dawson was buried, and neil back was acting scrum half, and didn't know what to do with the ball, that's when the brilliant captain, martin, screamed for the ball, took it in, and never made a single yard, but what that did was ,it freed up matt, and gave jonny time to set, and then, over it goes

I was 5 years old at centre parks. My dad missed most of the first half because I was meeting ‘santa’ 😂 Got to the sports bar which was packed to the brim and I went in the play area of course. Came out of the ball pit when it sounded like the roof had come off the place to see my dad getting picked up by some huge stranger as if my dad was the World Cup. Furthermore, I don't see Ireland atop the record streak with NZ or England either.

I cycled past Twickenham during Englands last game v France before the World Cup. I had 8 pounds in my pocket. A tout asked if I'd like a ticket, how much would I give for it. '' Everything I've got" I replied. I emptied my pockets and he was good as gold, gave me the ticket and let me have the price of a pint in the ground out of the 8 quid. We trounced the French and I was in SE Asia for the final which I lived and died watching in Thailand. Nothing but nothing could match the thrill of the final whistle. Thank You Boys

England deserved lifting the cup that year, that team was physically strong, super fit but also very intelligent, nothing but class. Was even better they stopped aussie winning it a 3rd time lol.

Dawson - so cool under pressure, twice! He had to get that last dummy pass and Aussie offside line just right, nerves of steel! And the sheer nerve to dummy the first time and take those extra yards. Gotta hand it to him, may not have had the best skill set ever etc but mentally he was outstanding and that’s all you need to be a winner! Somehow more pride comes from attitude than does ability!

One of the most unspoken things about the whole last couple of minutes, is Martin Johnson recognising before anyone that Dawson is at the bottom of the Ruck and doesn’t want anyone else to make that pass back to Wilkinson. He even takes that ball in and lays right next to where the first Ruck is. That’s some quick thinking Rugby IQ in the last minute of the biggest game of his life.

Will never forget watching this early in the morning on a rainy weekend and being so p%#$ed off that I had to go to football training and as a result was going to miss half of the Game! Thankfully the rain was so bad that morning that no sooner did we arrive, training was cancelled due to a waterlogged pitch and we rushed home just in time for extra time. I remember thinking it was going to penalty kicks... 🤣 and then the kick of all kicks happened, I was only young but knew how much it meant. Won't ever forget it and what a moment it was, huge especially against the Aussies on their home turf!
