    I started the boat for the first time this summer 2015 and the temp gauge worked. I also added Teflon tape on the threads to prevent leaks. This repair was a success.

      Sure Glad it was. The Mercruiser made for some amazing boating footage so far this summer!

      I have the same motor but a 4.3 I put a new thomostat in and took the boat out and I noticed my temp guage doesn't not work with the key on but when I turn my key to the off position the guage then reads that the temp is. Any answers to what's going on?

    Looks good. Don’t add the Teflon tape, the sender relies on metal to metal connection for ground.

    Did water run out of the engine when you removed the old sender?

  • @timturino6630

    Great video - simple and to the point- to rule out a malfunctioning gauge. One more step before changing the sender is to check and replace the thermostat. After replacing the sender my gauge still didn't work - turns out the thermostat was stuck open so cool lake water was being pushed past the sensor never letting the engine warm up all the way, and, of course, not causing the sender to register any heat. I may have changed the sender needlessly...

    Hi there great video but how did you get the socket on the sender? I have the exact same alpha one engine and a socket will not go around the sender...it is so tight against the top of the unit...thanks!

    Thank you for sharing. I wasn't planning on changing my Temperature sender on my boat. Did that testing ( ground it) and came to see the sender was bad. The question is: Did yo torque the sender?
    The temperature on the boat is 175. Already changed the thermostat.

    How long before the wire chafed through laying against the drive belt like that?

    • @BigIslandMNMinnetonka
      @BigIslandMNMinnetonka  8 лет назад

      It is not touching the belt. two inches off. It wasn't it's final resting place. As i said I put tape on to seal the threads. It was hard to hold the camera, wrench and wire in place. So , I just spun it for the camera and readjusted after the tape.

    I had a temp gage stop, so i put in a new gage and sensor when i rebuilt my engine, V6 mercruiser, the new engine and all new stuff was showing 200 to 220 with a 140 thermostat. but engine felt cool not really 200, I checked everything both pumps, changed it all still 200.. finally bought a more expensive gage, and matching sensor, and got OEM thermostat and now it reads 140. finally...

    My temp gauge reads minimum (100F) all the time, how do I check what type of sender I have and what type of gauge it will be compatible with? My OEM gauge is Medallion 8-84 which appears to be defunct, I can't even find replacement units on eBay.

    • @BigIslandMNMinnetonka
      @BigIslandMNMinnetonka  8 лет назад

      The one I put in was Seirra I believe. I do not know how to test the gauge. I am not even sure you can find an original on some of them. Sorry I can not help. If you have a mercruiser you could find one an auto part store most likely. They used some of the 4 cylinders in for lifts.
