What are the security implications of using large amounts of btc to open lightning channels? I use umbrel and the wallets are on my local network and you can't use hardware wallets with this software? Is there a way to make it secure?
My setup is exactly the same as yours and I have had the same concerns. However, I don't think that we need to worry about it considering that Hardware wallets are not the only way to secure your bitcoin. As long as you protect your seed phrase, you're fine putting several BTC on a lightning channel.
To use a hardware wallet with BTC Umbrel and Lightning, you can connect your hardware wallet to your Umbrel node using a compatible wallet software such as Sparrow or Electrum. You can also use your hardware wallet with a Lightning Network-enabled wallet that can connect to your own Lightning node. The Umbrel node itself does not provide a wallet address, but you can generate both on-chain deposit and withdrawal addresses as well as Lightning receive and send addresses in the Lightning Node app running LND. In all honesty I'm new to BTC and blockchain stuff in general. Trying to find the safest way to interact with this stuff from the jump. I am interested to dig into this stuff!
