    I like the podcast format! I know it’s an extra cost to get it on a podcast feed but from memory it’s not much and it’d be easier for a lot of people to listen that way. I in terms of videos I’d like to see, I really am a simple man, but I just want to see games of skate. I rinsed through Haffey’s and they’re so good, and then they just end. I NEED MORE. And there are so many good Uk bladers! Blake vs Paul! Battle of the London OGs!!!

    Boot down angle idea...
    Use a protractor to find max lean angle and as a online image to show people the max lean angle.
    eg. soul plate width equals 30mm, frame height equals18mm, join those measurements up on paper to create a triangle. On the protractor place the frame measurement in the centre line of the protractor, observe the angle on the protractor. In this case 31 degrees, meaning you have to lean 31 degrees to reach max lean angle.
    Examples:
    S (Soulplate width(30mm) + F (Frame height(18mm) = D (31)
    If a soul plate is 30mm and a frame is 30mm it would have a 45 degree man lean angle, any equal S + F measurement will always result in a 45 degree max lean angle.
    A S + F where the S is smaller than the F measurement means a much bigger max lean angle, so if you have a big soul plate but a small frame height then you could lean less, and if you have a big frame height and a small soul plate lot more lean...
    I think, it's what I've been doing

    A huge factor in this is how much flex there is in the boot. For example, with a Roces Fifth Element, you can "bone" the skate over onto the soul plate with your legs perfectly straight because there's so much give in the plastic. With the USD Aeon, it's much stiffer, so you need to bend a little.

    I'm very very sorry for being a know-it-all here, but I can Help you Out with the maths:
    Your "Ratio" (Soul Plate width divided by frame height) can be transferred into an Angle by the trigonometric function "arc Tan" (inverse function of Tangens). Your example 35 mm / 30 mm = 1,17. Arc Tan of 1,17 is 49,5°.
    This Angle represents how far your leg has to tilt:
    small Angle = very strong tilting (more difficult royale) in your example 0,83 -> 39,7°
    large Angle = less tilting (easier royale) in your example 1,85 -> 61,6°
    Special Case: Soul Plate width identical to frame height: "1" equals 45°
    The Beauty about that is that it Brings together in an identical way what Lawrence from 50/50 did and your work as mentioned below by Asim Önder.
    Lawrence measures 48° for Aeon 60 which is different to yours, but the exact numbers depend on where/what you measure and the real geometry of the royale grove. But the overall Trend is almost identical.
    I'd wish I could skate as good as I'm with trigonometry... 🙃
    Btw. I skate Razors SLs with self-Made Backslide Plates to have a really large Angle. Every cheating is helpful as a 42 year old aggressive skater 😊

    I think a better method of measuring the royale angle would be to place the skate boot down on a rail and measure the angle that the skate sits on. The royale ratio measurement seems a bit odd as I imagine that the cult is close to the M12 as Jake said, but the shape of the plate made the measurements wonky.
    It would also be a good idea to use the same frame for all skates. Something like a Fluid IV will make your royales more stood up whereas a 50/50 balance requires a bit more bone over.

  • @1995blooper
    @1995blooper Год назад +3

    I've been thinking about this for a while and wanting to design an online tool that can calculate the 'Royale angle' between any frame and boot that people could reference when buying online... the issue with the pythagorean approach you're using is that frames with squared off h-blocks (like the one you're showing) grind at a significantly deeper angle than hblocks with more of an ark (ie where the hblock is shorter at the framewall and taller in the center of the frame--like a kaltik). If you're publishing the royale angle for complete skates, just set it on a prail, drop a string from the top of the cuff, and measure the angle from that string to the injection mold seem running up the back of the cuff with a protractor. It's much more straightforward than the soul to hblock ratio you're using and also more correct of a measurement.
    I agree that as you break-in a frame, the royale angle gets less deep. I don't think that matters when it comes to selling gear though. If people are skating gritty enough stuff to grind down their hblocks enough for it to matter, they are experienced enough to understand what that does to a skate.
    If you want to do a more general tool so that people can compare their current frames (in new condition, at least) with other frames, reply to this and let me know. I have ideas. I think having a tool like that online would be really useful to those who don't have a blade shop near them.

    Measuring backslide angle is a great idea, been suggesting it to shops for years, but expressing it as a ratio is just massively unintuitive.
    Just get a piece of coping-size pipe, lay it flat on a table, set the skate on it in a backslide, measure the angle from vertical using a protractor or angle finder on the vertical seam that most boots have running up the heel of the shell and cuff.
    This is much more intuitive as a larger angle means you have to bend the skate over more to get boot-down. Smaller angle, less bending.

    • @BrandonShatley
      @BrandonShatley Год назад

      The ratio thing is a good idea to bake into the back end of the website. If you worked out the geometry details (backslide X-Y position, UFS channel depth, frame groove position, etc.) and stored those as data on the boots and frames, then have a parts picker feature that calculates your backslide angle and displays just that. On individual frames and boots, just display some kind of 1-5 "backslide index" that shows generally how deep you'll need to go, and give an angle on the whole skate. Then you'd have an extremely overthought, but cool, piece of consumer friendly marketing.

    • @aldolega
      @aldolega Год назад +1

      @@BrandonShatley That'd be a really cool final goal, but that's a lot to accomplish as a first step. I think initially it'd be more realistic for Loco to do a simple measurement like I suggested, this could be done for every complete skate in every size in a few hours. 80% of the benefit for 20% of the work.

  • @jondroog710
    @jondroog710 Год назад

    I think what you're actually looking for is the degree of the smallest of the angles of the right triangle created by frame wall, plate width and hypothetical rail (calculated as “sin”)~ as it is the ratio of the frame height opposite the angle to the length of the triangle's hypotenuse (distance between the top of the frame and edge of the plate.) As mentioned previously by Craig Beale, a 1:1 ratio implies that the frame height and plate width are equal, thereby creating a 45 degree angle. The more "boned over," the smaller the degree of the angle.

  • @bencoates6081

    Your "royale ratio" is just one step short of trigonometry, if you were to take the tangent of that ratio it would give you the angle that people would need to lean at to lean onto the frame.
    Everyone who said "when will I ever use this" in Trig class at GCSE maths, this, this is exactly when you will use trig. You could also publish the angle because people understand lean angles more than ratio.

    A good way to test a theory is trying to disprove it. One way of doing that is taking it to an extreme. If your frame height and soulplate width are both 4 cm then that is a 45 degree angle. However, if your frame height and soulplate width is both 10 meters that would also be a 45 degree angle but with those dimensions it would be impossible to go boot down.
    I know it sounds rediculous, but the point is that more things factor in, like thickness of baseplate, heelraise, angle of soulplate (gawds are tilted), angle of bs plate grove, height of person, width of feet, flex in the boot and probably more:)

    • @tobias88ish
      @tobias88ish Год назад

      To be more realistic, a 10 cm frame height on a 45 degree angle would not feel the same as a 5 cm frame height on a 45 degree angle. And a boot with a lot of material between your foot and the frame (like the FR) would not feel the same as a boot with very little material (like the shadow), even if the angle was the same.

    you prob already know everything im about to say, but just in case (since this is going on your website as a reference).... when you do those measurements, you gotta measure not the soul plate, but the closest point to the boot on the backslide groove. also, you shouldn't measure the total height of the H block, you gotta measure from where the tapered part of the groove starts. like the featherlite 4 has a really tall H block, but there is a significant taper on the sides to make boot-down easier.

    Ennui city wrist guard: can also confirm that these can be used as medical splints! I crushed a nerve in my armpit a few years back that controlled all the use of my hand, so my hand and fingers were completely paralysed until my nerve gradually grew back after a few months. I used the Ennui city brace as a splint instead of the one from the NHS because it was way more comfortable.
    Also just a thought with the royale ratio, should you take the cuff height into account too? E.g USD Carbons or Iqons that use the USD VII soul frame would have a pretty stood up royale because they're low so you could stand up well, however Xsjados have possibly the most generous soul space ever made but are much taller so you need to get lower for your royale with them.

    In regards to the royale ratio, the method you're using to calculate doesn't quite work as nicely as one would hope. Since the frame wall thickness varies on each frame, that can effect the measurement of the soul groove distance and throw off the ratio. I think it's probably fine for a basic reference value across different setups since it's kind of an arbitrary number, but it might be more useful to just get a digital angle finder and use that instead. It's unfortunate, because I like the idea of having an easy number to calculate at home without any special tools as a way to compare different setups with others.

    I wish I knew the ratio on the Blanks before I got them. I was riding CO's and I've never felt so stand-uppy in my life. Torques were like fastslides practically. I put some Oysi's on though, that should make for a better ratio

      That's very interesting! I need to be a bit more stood but to get back into it I think. Struggling to get boot down at the moment

  • @se_cfh8715
    @se_cfh8715 Год назад

    Nice! Exactly what I was looking for, I can't get boot down as easily as back in the day. The bad news is I'm on Farmer 2 sways which should be pretty easy to get boot down 😂 I'm on GC featherlites, would I benefit from fluid 4s? Visually, they look like they have a deep groove

    • @LocoSkates
      @LocoSkates  Год назад +1

      Fluid 4’s have a deeper groove and are lower in height so would mean you’d have to bend your ankles (bone over) less… if that’s what you’re after(?)

    Im not sure what happened with customs at winterclash, but I work for a company called Frog bikes. My job is shipping out bikes to customers all over the UK, Europe and international. For Europe we use Mearsk to avoid DAP and DDP charges. We ship to there depot on Slough which gets sorted and then they send it to there depot in the the Nederland's. From there it gets shipped out to all our European customers. I wonder if at next year's winterclash you could send all you need to set up shop via Mearsk and then pick it up from there Nederland's depot on your travels? If interested I could put you through to the relevant people.

    What are the low risk grinds you would suggest for someone getting back in to skating at a similar age to you guys?

    • @LocoSkates
      @LocoSkates  11 месяцев назад +1

      For me personally, I'd say souls on low obstacles and royales on higher obstacles. lot of people use Mizous and forward p-stars this as a safety/warm-up grind on lower objects... I'd advise getting right on top of those for the most style-points though!

    This Boned Over Ratio or BOR is only for stock skates? You need to make a calculator that calculates for different frames.

    On the royale ratio won’t it change depending on the size of the skate?

    • @LocoSkates
      @LocoSkates  Год назад +1

      Interesting point. I suppose it would change per size for most brands if the soul plate groove placement was proportionate to the soul/foot size.

    • @RaziAvel
      @RaziAvel Год назад +1

      @@LocoSkates I’m not sure it was just a guess. You guys have a warehouse full of skates, you should pick one setup and calc the ratio for every size to see if it changes

    Could a measurement from frame wall to the start of the backslide plate give a good idea of how much angle is needed to bone over?
    Same measurements from top of the frame to the highest point of the H block could be used to create an angle figure when combining boots and frames…

  • @NOISlights
    @NOISlights Год назад

    I don’t think this ratio thing will work since nobody will ride skates stock they have preferred frames and even souls so you must factor in all these variables

  • @NOISlights
    @NOISlights Год назад

    So you copied ready to roll frame set ups like we have in America. Usually those are for parts in a pinch if you need bearings or wheels cheap then you just sell the frames or add them to the collection box.

    I pay $10/mo for RUclips Premium and I get RUclips Music (formerly Google Play Music... basically Google's Spotify equivalent) with it. Worth every penny as I hate ads with a passion. I have no idea how people put up with them.
    Maybe VPN to a US location and try buying the subscription from there? Could save a few bucks/quid.

    For the royale ratios why don't you go with the angle the skate rest at on a level rail and give the angle in degrees then no one has to learn a new scale

    Love this channel but I'm sat here in Disbelief shaking my fist at the screen. You're using some random non descript number that won't make sense to anyone. generated from a irrelevant formula when there's a perfectly good system that's been used (almost) since the dinosaur's roamed the earth already. Degrees of Angle. 90° is leg straight up, 0° is knee scraping. The perfect royale angle is 45°. Want stood up easier grinds? Use setups that are >45°. Want steezy low royales? Use setups
