Rothenburg ob der Tauber - that beautiful little town on the Romantic Road is for tourists the epitome of German cities. The Altstadt (Old Town) is a patchwork of winding cobbled lanes lined with picturesque half timbered houses.

Plönlein Rothenburg Germany
One of the most taken pictures of Rothenburg Germany is the Plönlein fork, a famous landmark.
Pass the Plönlein, that scenic fork in the road is the landmark of the town. Head for the market place and climb the platform of the nice Town Hall to get impressive views. Then you shouldn't miss the idyllic Burggarten (Rothenburg castle garden).
A major pilgrimage site is the gothic church St.Jacob. Its main attraction is the Heilige Blut Altar (Holy Blood Altar) carved by Tilman Riemenschneider, said to contain a drop of Christ's blood.

Famous events: the historic festival "Meistertrunk" takes you back in the Middle Ages with parades in traditional costumes.

Great attractions of Rothenburg ob der Tauber: Dive into the time of Thirty Year's War by visiting the historical vaults of the Town Hall with dark dungeons and exhibitions or go to the Crime Museum, which shows the Middle Ages from the dark side with instruments of torture, execution items, weapons etc.
The historic festival "Meistertrunk" (on Whitsuntide) takes you back in the Middle Ages with parades in traditional costumes, a medieval market and a field camp. They celebrate the event from 1631, when the city council rescued the town by taking the challenge to empty 3 1/4 liter of wine in one gulp!

Sehr schöne Aufnahmen. Ich war noch nie dort, hab aber viel davon gehört. Ich habe einen Faible für mittelalterliche Architektur und dessen Atmosphäre.
Allerdings....... Nach allem, was erzählt wird, wie überwältigend diese Stadt wirken soll........ Ich komme aus einem der Ghettos von NRW und hatte bis ich 18 war so ewas sowiso noch nie gesehen. Damals lernte ich jedoch jemanden kennen, der später ein guter Freund werden sollte, den ich auch fortan regelmäßig besuchte. Er wohnt sein ganzes Leben lang schon in "Bamberg". und als ich ihn das erste mal besuchte, packte mich natürlich der Kulturflash des Jahrhunderts.
Und da dachte ich, dass eine Stadt, die dermaßen in allem Munde ist wie Rothenburg ob der Tauber, diesen Anblick noch um Längen übertreffen könne. Jedoch anhand der Bilder find ichs im Moment lediglich vergleichbar. Auch Bamberg ist vollgestopft mit Kultur, mittelalterlichen Bauten, verwinkelten Gassen, oder Sehenswürdigkeiten wie den Dom, die gotischen Kirchen, Klöster und Burgen. Wahrscheinlich nehmen sich diese beiden Idyllen nicht sehr viel.
Aber endgültig beurteilen kann man das natürlich nur, wenn man wirklich mal dort gewesen ist... Werd ich wohl noch nachholen ;-)
Lieber David, ich habe auch diese Städte spät entdeckt. Es gibt eine Stadt, die sogar voll auf der Stadtmauer umrundet werden kann. Nördlingen. Eine ruhige, verträumte Stadt in Nordbayern... nicht so bekannt, aber mit einer vollständig erhaltenen mittelalterlichen Innenstadt. Für mich die beste dieser Städte in Deutschland. Ich empfehle auch: Mühlhausen in Thüringen, Erfurt. Beste Grüße!

We are all lucky, that USA & England air force have forgotten or missed and didn't bombard and ruin this precious town, the architecture of Rothenburg (as they did with Heilbronn, Dresden, Hamburg & many other cities of Germany, bombardind and ruining its old architecture)
