Even as an American I find these things a challenge to drive on smaller streets - it's not the length, but the width. Imagine they must require a lot of concentration on UK lanes. Though for truly gargantuan Fords, I think the 1960 Galaxie (and Mercury counterparts) have it at 81.50 wide - 2070 mm. (They weren't even officially 'legal' in some states - though Ford got a one year pass)

The Crown Vic/Grand Marquis is only 4" wider max than a Mustang. It's being used to big cars that makes them comfortable. I learned how to drive in my Mom's 1978 Ford LTD station wagon...
And my Dad's '78 Ford Fiesta. It gave me a nice contrast.

The width of the UK Ford Transit van is 2474mm including the mirrors so the Crown Vic isn't too big for UK roads. Just needs more concentration due to being driven from the wrong side of the road.

So happy for you! As an American who owns small British cars in the US (a classic Mini and a MINI), I totally understand the appeal a big American Crown Vic has for you in the UK! It’s a very cool car and the V8 sounds delicious under full throttle!

I haven't finished the video yet, but there is a cheap, easy, and effective way to solve the speed of the turn signal flash. You get one of the electronic flashers that is used for trailer towing. The speed of the flash will be spot on, even with just the front signal being a normal bulb. They cost about $7CDN, or about £5. I can't imagine the mailing cost would be much as they are small and light, so if you find you need one, shoot a message and I can have it in the post the same day. I have changed more than a few. I would also do the one for the 4 way flashers because of the way they are wired. If the 4 way flasher goes bad and sticks in the wrong position you are left with no brake lights or turn signals as well. You get one guess to figure out why and how I know that. Here's a hint: 5 Panthers and 4 Torino Birds.
I'm up to 11:03 now. You backing down the drive needing to give it a bit of throttle tells me that the brakes are still sticking, and likely more than one. With the age of the car, it is likely a good idea to do all 4 flex lines, too. They can delaminate and the lining of the hose can act as a line lock.
For dampers, the Ford branded Gas shocks are the way to go. They just work better. They also last, having seen 150,000 miles out of them before failure.

The car was his only car and after 5 or 6 years by 2004 he sold the car and a few year later my dad saw Megan on a flat bed and was painted silver, tubbed and had a big block 460 fitted. Someone bought Megan and turned her into a drag car.....such a shame

What is this MOT thing you refer to? Only joking but I don't miss working on my car in the the middle of a UK winter trying to get it ready for the MOT. Here in Western Australia, as long as you keep your vehicle continually registered, then it will never need any test whatsoever, even after 10 or 20 years. It only needs a test if the registration has lapsed by more than 3 months. You do, however, still have a duty to keep your vehicle in a roadworthy condition at all times.

Enjoyed the high drama when the CV returned home and was immediately given a stern dismantling. Well played getting that fixed yourself. I bought an LS430 recently that had a collapsed rear air shock. Took me a while to find a mechanic that would fit replacement used parts, so that I too could get it MOT'd. So I know the frustration of looking longingly at a car you can't drive. Car passed with no advisories, but the joy for me was short-lived when the front shock went along with the compressor. Ebay is an aladdin's cave for car spares though so I'm back up and running (for now).

Congratulations!! For reference, since you are doing shock absorbers, consider Bilstein 24-014953 for the front and 23-014960 for the rear if you cannot get Motorcraft police shock absorbers. The Bilsteins ride a bit firmer, but they are great and also quite durable.
For the stabilizer bar links, I recommend sealed units that are factory filled with synthetic grease. The Original Equipment part is Motorcraft MEF-171.
As for brake fluid, definitely flush out the old stuff and refill with DOT 4 Plus or DOT 5.1 brake fluid. Also consider changing your power steering fluid; the Ford pumps tend to have the infamous whine at some point. I'd suggest you go with CHF-11S for that one.

    • @furiousdriving
      @furiousdriving  2 года назад

Ive actually already ordered the shocks and links from Rock Auto, sealed links and standard Motorcraft Police spec shocks. I thought about firmer ones but as Im only doing the front didnt want to upset the handling, and wanted to try it in regular form before modifying it. Someone else commented about using transmission fluid in the power steering, have you come across that before?

    • @balkanca
      @balkanca 2 года назад

@@furiousdriving Ford calls for Mercon V ATF in the power steering system, used to be plain Mercon at one point before Mercon V superceded it since Mercon is no longer being licensed. That being said, CHF-11S hydraulic fluid is a far better fluid for the power steering system. It uses a PAO base stock (doesnt thin out or break down easily), has an extremely high viscosity index (great for extreme cold and extreme heat) and a low cSt (flows easily) that is only matched by aviation grade hydraulic fluids.

Your P-71 seems to be much like the 2000 P-71 I owned from 2004 until 2009. They are really not much like the civilian Crown Vic, everything on your car is specced for heavy duty and high speed pursuit work. Balanced and blue printed engine and firm shift at full throttle trans program. Run it up and let it shift through the gears at full throttle and you will be smiling.
Mine had Raybestos racing brakes, cop suspension including the shocks, cop steering for tight U turns on the narrow street. Ford Traction Loc rear end may use a 3.23 gear, mine had the optional 3.55 gear. Full throttle shift into overdrive at 100mph unless you deactivate od by using the button on the gearshift lever.
They drive best when you drive them like a cop, hammer it, they like full throttle and 100 mph. And remember, it's a Police Interceptor, not necessarily a Crown Victoria. My present car is a Dodge Hemi Charger Pursuit - Big, Fast, and Loud.

Edit: Not to mention for a ol Vic it is blessed coming from Ohio and surprisingly clean/bearly rusted for it's age most of the ones I work on even if low mileage the salt has just eaten them alive. As a Ford nut I hope it does you well, also lots of the taxi Crown Vics I've worked have their original engines with 300k-500k miles on em still running strong... Maintenance goes a long way with em.

These cars spare parts here in the gulf region is very cheap as there are many of them.. Happy to see this 98-02 CVPI in UK as it is unusual

Not sure if there's one for the Crown Victoria, but you can buy indicator flasher relays that have a speed adjuster. I use one on my MG TF 160 which I've converted to LED flasher bulbs.

@furiousdriving Result! Cracking motor! Not teaching you to suck eggs mate but when you are winding in brake caliper pistons always ensure that the Master cylinder cap is off! Could end up with a goosed master cylinder! Cheers.

    Congratulations.
However, it reminded me of how expensive car ownership can be. It seems to be one thing to fix, after another. I think I shall stick to admiring other people's cars.

Are both electric mirrors inop? In that case, start with checking fuses and wiring in the door. When police cars get decomissioned, sometimes they tend to favor the wire snippers a bit too much.
BTW: I have a spare electric LH mirror with (black) cap and mirror and all the wiring should you need it. Not heated though, but otherwise perfectly functional. From The Netherlands it'll be there a lot faster than waiting for Rockauto.

drove one as taxi and owned a police model....very nice comfortable and powerful car...never buy a used police car though...it was trash..they usually are beat up...expect the transmission to go out..the cops kill them chasing people unless you get a "detectives model" where they drive around doing police duty not street patrol. Always check how many "idle hours" are on the engine..should tell you how it was used.

If you think that a P71 is smooth you need to try its luxury cousin the Lincoln Town Car at some point. Those cars have unbelievable rides! :)

If you put in K&N air filter Your motor will breathe better and it’ll have more rumble in the engine bay I live in South Texas My 04 crown Victoria was throwing a cat code I just removed all 4 The two in the back I cut them off the ones in the front I knocked out with a crowbar Took it to a muffler shop and they straight piped it I still have the factory mufflers on It In South Texas it’ll pass inspection just take it to your local muffler shop they just flip the blinkers check the lights you’re good My check engine light is on but I don’t care I get better fuel mileage and more power without the cats

Yeah I never understood the parking break/e-brake. I've been driving for 15 years and have never used it. Heck, when I took my car in to get certified/safetied, the mechanic didn't even care that the parking break didn't work. If I parked on a steep hill I might use it, but otherwise, what is the point?

Too bad Ford quit the production of this fine vehicle.
As a Radio Tech working on cruisers for several PD's it was great driving new cars from the dealer to the PD. plain white wrapper the only give away are the pair of spots on the A pillars. Funny they had no number plates on them either and we are passing several city cruisers as well as the State Patrol. Never were stopped just an acknowledgement wave from some of the officers.
One of the best riding cars of the time! Yes the power of that engine is great! Enjoy the ride!

Do a change of brake fluid! Maybe there is moisture inside. Also you can get very strong but cheap ramps on eBay. If u buy 4 of them you will be able to work under any car.

wow what a fuss to go through with the DVLA for registration. Here in Victoria Australia all we have to do is drop into one the customer service centers. Hand over our Roadworthy (MOT) certificate & transfer of registration paperwork pay the cashier some money and hey presto we have a road legal car. None of this waiting around for Post man pat to arrive.

Congrats on the MOT but you were daft not to crack open the bleed nipple on the caliper to drain out just the old fluid from the hose and caliper. Without doing a full flush and bleed you can get rid of the most deteriorated hard working fluid from the important section, especially after you’ve really cooked it. Try it when you’re back underneath that corner….

The P71 interceptor was my dream car, Until i got in one for a test drive. My 6 foot 4 frame is too long to comfortably drive these cruisers. Still have a love for them though. Glad to see one getting the love it deserves after probably years of Duty and hours and hours of idling.
