    • @wsbill14224
      @wsbill14224 5 months ago +13

      @torkjoy1This is how it goes. A "normal" battery that is allowed to go completely dead will be so sulfated, it won't charge unless you hit it with a stick welder or a charger like mine with a 300 Amp boost setting. Make sure it's full then charge it at 300 Amps for 5 minutes at a time so you don't cook it, and after a few tries it will begin charging normally again, then slow charge it overnight to complete the desulfation process and you're all set!

    I just use an old dc welder and charge the battery at 24 to 30 volts . This high of voltage desulfates the plates. I read somewhere that it takes a minimum of 16 volts to work . Its important not to overheat the battery ,I usually charge for 15 to 20 minutes ,let it cool and hit it again it may take several cycles to bring it up to full power but it works ive been using the same battery in my truck for 12 years and it still cranks and last like a new one. Research this . I speak the truth

    • @WickedGod-l7x
      @WickedGod-l7x 5 months ago +12

      Ive read its pulsating high volts and 0 amps that breaks the scale off the lead.
      No amps means no heat.

      I was told that over 20 years ago but forgot. Never tried it, never had a DC welder, but I've seen a few cheap ones around.. I might add it to the shopping list.

    • @ab_ab_c
      @ab_ab_c 5 months ago +28

      @WickedGod-l7x No amps means no current flow. The V alone won't do the work to convert lead sulfate back into lead. He's using 24/30V to shock V the lead sulfate crystals. It will work, but it needs to be monitored very closely to prevent over boiling of the electrolyte & over heating of the plates--which warp quite easily & can short circuit/destroy a battery.

    Batteries dont last because of the lead breaking down and losing its electrons. Anyone taken one apart for the lead content knows this because in many cases, there is no salvagable lead left. Also, replacing the acid with electrolytes only works for a very short time, and if tried again, there is no acid left for the battery to work with. Why they still sell sulphuric acid in the parts stores, and thats what you fix a battery with. But must dispose of the old acid by leaving at the drop spot at the dump because it's not just acid anymore and is loaded with lead now held in solution.

    I have a Nocogenius10 battery charger. If a battery fails, i put this charger on it and press the repair mode button. Leave it on till light goes out then charge. Might take a day to do this, but it has worked every time. So far. About 6 times. RV, truck, lawn mower.

      I had to leave mine on my mower bad repair mode for almost 9 days but it works like a champ. Repair mode just switches the amp charging in a random order and that will do a lazy man cleaning of the plates but super slow

    • @quevicular
      @quevicular 5 months ago +5

      Yep I do the same thing with my batteries. Most of the time it works sometime it doesn't because the plates are buggered. Then I do a cold cranking amp and cranking amp test and that will tell you if your battery has enough power to crank efficiently. Otherwise I wouldn't suggest doing this. The battery he has done this to most likely has about a third to a half the cranking amps. I'd like to see him do a test on a completed battery

      Did I miss something? Epsom salt is now the electrolyte instead of sulphuric acid? That seems chemically unlikely... Haven't run the formulas yet.. it seems strange replacing H² SO⁴ with . MG SO⁴ +7H²O. Which only has a Ph of about 6. A very weak acid. But if it works...

    • @Ed-ty1kr
      @Ed-ty1kr 3 months ago +2

      A good descailing or (reconditioning) cycle does work, but desulfation process by use of magnesium sulfate (epsom salt) works better, and serves as a good conductor for current due to magnesium sulfate and lead sulfate underging a single replacement reaction, and magnesium metal is more reactive than lead.

    I just retired a battery from my 1999 John Deere lawn tractor it was the ORIGINAL battery!! 26 years not too bad. I used the machine in the winter for as a snowblower as well for years and I think that's what really helped keep it alive. I may try this method to bring it back, not for the costs saving but because this battery now has sentimental value to me lol

    If Epsom salts was a permanent solution why are all batteries of this chemistry using sulphuric acid?

    • @stephenwilkinson1254
      @stephenwilkinson1254 5 months ago

      the author is full of shit
      This tidbit is from @ab_ab_c who commented:
      "Important Limitations and Recommendations:
      • Epsom salt is not a complete electrolyte replacement because it lacks the strong acidity of sulfuric acid necessary for normal battery operation. The typical battery acid concentration is about 35% sulfuric acid and 65% water, which Epsom salt cannot replicate.
      • After reconditioning with Epsom salt, it is usually recommended to remove the Epsom salt solution and refill the battery with the standard sulfuric acid electrolyte to restore proper battery performance and longevity.
      • Leaving Epsom salt solution inside the battery for regular use can cause increased gassing and corrosion, which may harm the battery over time.
      • The Epsom salt treatment is best suited for mildly to moderately sulfated batteries that still have viable internal components. It will not revive batteries with dead cells or severe internal damage."

      @Countryman333 3 months ago +4

      Sounds crazy but I was reading an article that some country developed a salt battery. They are talking about how it will replace lithium, etc. I'm not sure about lifespan power, etc. But sometimes the right choice doesn't work. Like hydrogen.

    1:17 .. You listed some basic safety precautions which were good, but speaking as someone who has had a lead acid battery explode (just violently pop I guess) near to my face as I was trying to put the terminals on, here's some great advice. *Be near a water source* and also make sure you are wearing old clothes because even bad acid will rot right through them... You won't see anything at first but wait until you wash them! I was young and I wasn't wearing eye protection, but the reaction speed of a blink is astonishing and as such I never had eye harm. Just thoughts...

    • @robertleslie6431
      @robertleslie6431 5 months ago +4

      And true as the day is long, @Injudiciously. There is hydrogen gas being produced, and when a spark touches that it's a little Hindenburg. It was a mistake not to mention that. So Thanks. A truly large number of batteries have been exploded, one by me! So let's all remember that people. Charging lead acid batteries and incautious cable handling can result in unpleasant results. 😢
      .

    • @robertleslie6431
      @robertleslie6431 5 months ago +3

      A PS @Injudiciously. There can also be a comical side. I had built a Hot Rod I had to carry an in-case battery around for, because the really high compression ratio was so hard on the old six volt system with starting it.
      So I was out one night with the battery in back, and it tipped over. No big deal, except i got acid on my jeans. About three or four hours later, I get out heading to go into the roller skating rink, and felt a cold breeze! Twenty people! I looked down and had nothing on but my zipper covering my underwear! You'd think I'd learn, but over the years I've handled humdreds of batteries, and like 6 times totally wasted my jeans.
      Then synthetics came out replacing a lot of cotton, and you at least have a chance your clothes will come out of the wash whole with those.

      I had a battery boil acid out the vents and spray my hand, you want MILK not water, water is an acid, milk is a base and will stop the burn.

    • @robertleslie6431
      @robertleslie6431 5 months ago +7

      @PatrickBaptist Sorry Patrick, milk might work ok, but water is not an acid, nor is milk a "base" whatever that means. In fact milk has butter fat in it that could possibly hold part of the acid against your skin. The plain and simple object is to get the battery acid off asap, and no matter what you have handy, the closest is what you use. You go running off looking for a cow and you could be in real trouble. 😂

    Heat your distilled water to 150°F to better dissolve the epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) mixture. You need 4oz of magnesium sulfate for 4cups of distilled water, the mixture needs to be clear not cloudy before use. There is really no need for sugary soft drinks if you have a battery reconditioning charger, I usually drink the soda instead.

    You can also get strong phosphoric acid by ordering Ph down for hydroponics. Quarts or gallons.

    Great video, theres a patent for adding Phosphoric acid to batteries from about 100 years ago. And they sell phosphoric acid dolutions for battery longevity. There are some serious flaws with your processes though. You should never put salt in your batteries, that will only create more corrosion and neutralize your ph. A Cold Cranking Amp comparison would easily demonstrate this. Sure you can have high voltage, but with low amps. This wouldn't work for cars. Additionally you should leave the caps off when your applying high amp charging to avoid pressure build up from off gassing. Batteries explode when they cannot vent properly. If you really want to bring your batteries back to life, drain the battery acid, filter it, rinse the cells with pure phosphoric acid, like OSPHO or a rust converter, then add the filtered acid back to the cells and top off with more battery acid. Do not dilute with distilled water. Water will neutralize the acid and reduce cold cranking amps. Then charge with high amps in 15 min intervals, till you see bubbles start to appear in the cells. Then apply low amps and charge for about 24 hrs. I've run the same batteries for over 20 years doing this. As long as the circuits are not shorted out and the lead plates are intact you can bring old batteries back often with better cold cranking amps then when they were new. Additionally adding a few ounces of phosphoric acid to the cells of your new batteries will prolong the life and reduce build up of sulfites. Remember batteries work through simply the transfer of electrons between the lead plates and the acid, anything you can do to improve that process or prolong that process will help.

      What kind of filter do you use to filter battery acid?

    • @TheTumblerGrip
      @TheTumblerGrip 5 months ago +17

      @michaelboyle1983 you can use normal coffee filters to filter the acid. if using coffee filters I would suggest filtering it twice and use several single filters throughout the process. put filter in a funnel and slowly pour into new bottle and repeat until acid is cleared up

    Thanks for the great detailed information.
    The problem I would have is that as I only have a smart charger, that can also give a nice low 2amp charge, it's not going to even start charging until the battery is around 8v to 10v so I would have to try to find an older style (un smart) charger which is going to be quite expensive and difficult these days.
    I've just ordered a new battery for my Honda Odyssey but will certainly dabble with this with the old battery just for curiosity.
    But certainly food for thought.
    Thanks heaps.

    I was once a vendor for a soda can machine manufacturer and they would always say that Diet Coke was the most corrosive. It would breakdown the industrial coatings on the machines. Just FYI
