How Perfect Blue Blends Terror with Beauty

  • Perfect Blue came out in theaters over the weekend of September 6th-10th, and it was an awesome experience. However it made me want to revisit my original analysis of the anime. Perfect Blue made me terrified of what people are capable of doing on the internet. This film made me sick to my stomach but is one of my favorite films of all time. It examines mental health in a way that feels not one bit outdated. A film from the 90s managed to make me more aware of the world around me, more specifically the online world around me. Perfect Blue is 25 years old and it is more relevant than ever before. It shaped how I viewed the internet and people in general. Maybe it will do the same for you.
As always, let me know your thoughts in the comments! Enjoy the video!

I love and hâte this film. The SA in this film is horrible. I wish it was dealt with more sensitivity but then again it is a film from the 90s😂

@Whoiswe923 This is 100% a valid opinion. This anime SHOULD HAVE absolutely handled the SA better. I do like the portrayal of psychosis and mental health, for the 90s it is pretty good however with the knowledge we have in 2023, Perfect Blue could easily be improved upon.

My friend and I watched this in high school and really liked it but the most important thing we took away was whispering "Cow brand milk!" at each other and cracking up. Oh, and being able to pull a hipster "I liked it before it was cool" for Aronofsky films.

Excellent breakdown. Perfect Blue is one of those anime that I desperately need to rewatch (I don’t rewatch much anime, so that list is rather short) because there’s so much to take in. I knew what to expect going in, but I came away with a complicated set of feelings about it, and I think that I may have another perception of it on repeat watches.

Thanks for watching the video! I have rewatched the film 4 times now, and I am still left with wanting more :O. I have had friends who felt so weird about it. It is a film that made some so uncomfortable. It’s a crazy movie experience

It's funny that nobody ever mentions the lookism aspect of Perfect Blue. While Perfect Blue seems to draw a lot from the situations of celebrities like Selena, it also predates the "incel" becoming a mainstream term. One need only look at the character designs of Perfect Blue to know who is okay and who is probably an insidious timebomb psycho waiting to go off. In a world like that ( which is the world we live in to some extent ) it's kind of easy to understand why parasocial relationships and vicariously living one's life through others is so predominate.

Great video! I’d never heard of the anime, so I wasn’t sure what to expect from the title. Also makes me think about how so many Disney kids have a hard time breaking that image and moving onto adult roles. It’s like once the public gets an image of a celebrity, they refuse to let them grow. Which is unfair, especially to children. Makes me so grateful my developmental years of figuring myself out weren’t documented to millions lmao.

It didn't "predict" anything. Internet harassment was a thing even then when the Internet was still young and forums were a popular means of communication. Even in Japan, they had forums set up to talk about their favorite idols and hobbies and whatnot.
There was always a group of people who felt comfortable being assholes on the web.

Although I think you are right but Satoshi Kon really did make inferences on how people will continue to behave on the internet.

    • @Whoiswe923

I would say Satoshi Kon made calculated inferences of how people behave on the internet. Yes, people were shitty then, but even now people are even worse. Online harassment is a huge problem.

@@Whoiswe923 That's actually how "true" science fiction is supposed to work, and you see people all the time erroneously claiming that some past work "predicted" something we're dealing with today, when it was merely observing current trends and extrapolating the possible outcomes.

I watched Perfect Blue just a few years after it got released in the western market. My take at the time was a brilliant adaptation of Alfred Hitchcock movies into the animated medium. To me, it was all about story structure and aethetics. I did not look for a message at the time.
Interpreting Perfect Blue as a meditation on internet toxicity -- well, that's a new idea to me. I think I agree but only to a point.
You see, internet fandoms is only the latest version of a very old problem of stalkers. It's a new venue for an old show.
Look at Mark David Chapman, the guy who shot and killed John Lenon in 1980. Chaoman was a fan who reportedly performed the assassination to impress an actress with whom he became obsessed. Stalkers have probably been around forever. Also, consider the violent fans of any professional sports team.
It's true that the horror in Perfect Blue does largely begin with a website. However, the dangers otherwise experienced throughout the movie are physical. That includes all the in-person stalking and the violent climax.
