  • Based on a traditional Japanese Rice Bag, or Komebukuro, this beautiful drawstring bag is made from simple squares and has an easy drawstring closure.
    Stitch it up from your favourite fabrics in a size to suit your needs, the Japanese Rice Bag will hold a surprising amount of stuff, even when made from 15cm squares.
    Make it patchwork, add a funky lining, or even pad it out with quilt wadding to make a sturdy everyday bag with extra long drawstrings that double up as shoulder straps.
    The drawstring Komebukuro can make a great alternative to a traditional Christmas Stocking when sewn from festive fabrics so it's an easy way to start your DIY Christmas preparations. Why not wrap all your Christmas presents in a drawstring bag this year to give two gifts in one?
    Corinne shows you the simple steps, along with tips and tricks to make your sewing easier. This Japanese Komebukuro Drawstring Bag is the perfect first project for a novice stitcher as it's all just straight line sewing.

    Just a heads up, when we uploaded this we forgot to turn off the side camera audio track, and then we had a few days off! By the time we realised over 1,000 of you lovely people had watched it so rather than delete it and start again we though we'd let it lie. Can't be perfect all the time eh? c x

      I love this explanation, your channel is wonderful, side camera audio, lovely human mistakes, & the security to let it lie and ALL. 💘

    So glad you show an alternative way to sew the box shape...with the corners, whiich can be a stumbling block. Like your no nonsense approach. Heartening!

    I like the way you sewed the 5 sides into a cross first; easier than other methods I've seen. If you have a lot of layer cake/10" squares around, this would be a good way to use them, for a nice size lunch-tote.

    I absolutely LOVE the Japanese rice bag. Have a couple. With rice & beans,( still in their original bags) in them. Gotta make more, for potatoes & onions. My food closet almost looks cute 🤗

      Glad it didn't cause too much of an issue, I could've kicked myself when I heard it for myself while having a few days off! My fabric stash has kind of taken over my whole home, I can't bear to see good material go to waste! c x

    RUclips has a new time stamps feature that is handy and dead easy to set up for segmenting long videos like this. In the description field, you just insert 0:00 hello
    1:24 assemble the outer
    Etc.

    Some weird double audio stuff happening when you switched to the side view. I do love those bags. I have made a couple of Japanese rice bags, though the tutorials I've seen before have had the drawstring channels on the straight sides rather than on the corners. I don't think you've ever done any sort of sashiko tutorial - I'd like to see your take on that - I have played with it a little, with upcycled denim and fabric scraps and embroidery thread. I had so much fun I even bought proper sashiko thread.

    • @TheCraftsChannel
      @TheCraftsChannel  3 года назад

      Yeah, stupid technical error when we uploaded! I've tried sashiko and was considering doing some kind of 'quick hacks' demo but my eyesight is so shot now I'm really slow at doing close hand stitching so the idea's been shelved, c x

    Love the bag. What size squares did you use for the larger version, please?

    • @TheCraftsChannel
      @TheCraftsChannel  3 года назад +1

      From memory, each side was made of four 12cm/4.75" squares sewn with a 5mm seam allowance to make 23cm/9" panels, c x

  • @candicevidal9007

    • @TheCraftsChannel

      Totally not the way to make a proper drawstring closure. Use two strings exiting from opposite sides of the bag. Knot each of the pair as you did. Pull on each knotted end at the same time and it closes beautifully.

      We deliberately keep my mistakes in, of which there are many 😁
      I'd rather viewers realised that not everything goes right first time, especially if they're new to a craft. There is nothing more disheartening than not being able to perfectly recreate something yourself, c x
