I'm the Victorian era they used bustles, crinoline skirts and layers and layer and layers to achieve the "beauty standard" they didn't altar their bodies physically. I mean some high class did tight lace but it wasn't the common practice! Sometimes I wish we could be a bit more like that!

    • @dark_baphomet
      @dark_baphomet 8 месяцев назад +25

Same it sounds so much more comfortable, and any body could fit the standard with the right padding and corsets and stays etc, also the undergarments keep you cleaner and your clothes last longer because they aren’t as exposed to sweat that breaks down the fibres faster

Also, the corset acts like a weight distributor for all the clothes layers. Those layers & bustle cages didn't feel as heavy as they might sound (they're also a huge help for those with back pain due to being top heavy). They force you to lift stuff properly, too. I love them. Taught me better posture.

Tightlacing was actually not as common as it is believed. The myth of the corset that restricts your breathing was started by men (who also wore corsets for a time) and is perpetuated by Hollywood. Women would play sports, rock climb, do trapeze, all while wearing a corset. The padding in the corset does most of the work in creating the hourglass shape. I would recommend the videos of Karolina Zebrowksa for more information on corset myths.

I don't know if comments about how wrong it was will result in anything when the video's already here, with a quote from an author who has the gall to compare foot binding to corsetry, who is, oddly enough, an author of books on women's history. But she's not a dress historian, that's for sure. Considering the other articles on the Smithsonian site that literally dispel those same myths, it's disappointing they left that in her article or allowed it on their site. It's misinformation.

I'm from Vancouver, BC and there used to be (maybe still is? I haven't lived there for a long time) a vintage nightclub/ballroom called The Commodore right downtown. I loved going to concerts there because there was a huge dance floor that had horse hair underneath it, so as we danced and jumped the floor gave a mild trampoline effect. It was so much fun!

***I love you so much Bailey! But I do have to say, for the sake of accuracy, tight laced corseting was not the majority. It was very extreme beauty standards that some people would take too far. Much like how we have some awesome crazies who wear insanely high heels. Most women back then wore corsets that were the measurement of their natural waist, but actually padded out the bust and hip area. It could be extremely comfortable, depending on if it fit you properly. Foot binding was way more widespread then tight lacing was. The reason you get those crazy pictures that show women with teeny teeny tiny waists, was they would actually doctor the images like photoshopping. They would try to have a very plain background so that they could color in parts of the waist to make it much smaller than it is possible. Most women who tight laced were actresses or in the public eye, which is why we see those (possibly doctored) pictures. Victorians really weren't very different from us. Lol! If the corset is made well, it only shifts soft skin to wear it's comfortable. Thank you for coming to my TED talk. 😆

Lol, I actually do wear proper waist training corsets. It's been years now and I can comfortably do high reductions (having a long torso helps). There's no need to do any reduction if one doesn't want that though. Most Victorian women didn't reduce. If you feel pain or can't breathe while in a corset, then something is wrong. Remember, women had to sing opera, do house work, haul heavy buckets of water, etc. all in corsets. Some men also historically wore them for back problems, high society, proto on job safety braces, etc.
Corsets need to be picked based on your specific measurements. What fits me will cause pain for you (get as close to your measurements as possible if you buy off the rack instead of bespoke). You also MUST wear a layer between you and the corset. It will rub your skin raw if not. I can run, sing, eat, and breathe fine in a corset.

Sugar wax is basically wax. We still do it in Turkey. And you can do the wax at home with water, sugar and lemon like you said. And use really thin fabric for the waxing ☺️

    • @daniellemartin9896

Most people don't use fabric at all. You use one piece of wax over and over to do the whole area instead of wasting it on a cloth.

The big issue with corsets during WWI, as I understand it, was that they were usually reinforced with steel. Steel was requisitioned for the war effort. In fact, women who worked in munitions factories sometimes weren't ALLOWED to have steel in their garments, because it could cause a spark that could start a fire.
If fashion interests anyone, there is a wonderful channel called Crowseye Productions that has a "Getting Dressed" series where they show models (primarily women but some are men) getting dressed in clothing that would have been worn by particular people at particular times in history. That's where I learned about the corsets in WWI - from watching a video of a woman getting dressed as a VAD (Voluntary Aid Detachment; volunteer) nurse during WWI. (I am a nurse myself so found this video particularly interesting.)

Fun fashion fact from the 40's: nylons had seams in the back up the legs, so when nylons became unavailable during the war, women would take a yard stick and draw lines up the back of their legs to make it look like they were wearing nylons. Had to do it in theatre for a show.

My babysitter was a foreign exchange/expat from Taiwan and she told me horrid stories about her family binding her feet. She was probably about 28 back in the early 2000s. She said her family basically would just keep her feet bound in the cloth all the time. She didn’t have the toes curled under but she was a 28 year old with a size 4 women’s shoe. I tried to bind my feet when I was 12 cuz I loved her and I wanted to be like her… legit one of the worst pains I’ve ever felt

I purchased 3 corsets from Big Ruth in the late 80s. They were custom made to my 27 inch waist , making it 25 inches for my 69 inch height. Now, in 2024, I must lose 6 inches to get back into those corsets and must find strong arms with delicacy to lace them! One was bronze colored leather and another was black lace against silver satin.

Baking is a skill, and just like any skill it takes practice. Baking can be relaxing and fun. Just remember the old saying "Measure twice, cut once". Take the pressure off when you start to learn by making sure you can block out a couple of hours. This helps reduce some of the stress for beginners. Don't start with making the sweets for a Super Bowl party, baby shower, etc if you're just learning. You wanna have a "Sunday afternoon" type situation. Then thoroughly read your recipe. Start to finish. Maybe make yourself bullet point notes to refer to. Lastly, pre-measure everything and have it sorted out. Have the dishes, and utensils required all laid out within easy reach. Make sure your oven is preheated, and honestly, the rest is patience and timing. Give yourself time to get better. Don't expect perfect on the first try. Baking usually makes the tastiest mistakes as you practice and get better. Because you will improve the more you do it, and it's incredibly satisfying to bake a tasty treat that makes your friends and family hum while eating is a pretty awesome feeling. Lol. Also, have fun doing it or else what's the point?

I know you aren't a dress historian, but you really dropped the ball on your corset research this time, I am sorry. Corsets were comfortable, flexible, breathable. Some of them even made for athletic use in the late victorian era. And they have been in existence for like a thousand years in various forms because they help support both the bust and the outer garments, which were heavy and needed structure.
Tightlacing, the practice of pulling your corset all the way shut, was rare and only done by certain high fashion people, and never constantly. The lacing actually made it so they were adjustable, there was no requirement to squeeze oneself. Please look into dress historian sources and not sensationalized articles with little basis in actual practice. @bernadette banner
Also corsets don't change your body over time.
