Dom, looks like Midgard has shaken this one out of the woodwork. Thanks for buying and showing us the rule supplement even If Warlord did not send you a free copy.
Cheers Leslie. It wasn't so much that they didn't send it but more that they missed a trick to let some of us see it ahead of sale. Luckily I had an inclining so I bought it anyway but I know others were told it was coming and so didn't buy it so missed the opportunity to review. 1st world problems I know!
So got this, got Midgard on pre-order but may see about using this with Lion Rampant as that already includes commanders in the units that fight so the character rules may make for a closer fit wth little adaption. magic may need a tweak, thinking the Song of Arthur and Merlin that Magic is an off board effect, but will have to see after my own read through.
Looking forward to receiving mine, says delivery is tomorrow 🤞 Funny enough, I had starting making an Arthurian army and then saw this supplement and also heard about Midgard! So definitely happy!
Getting Midgard but also getting this one at some point - I like having a couple of systems for the same period as normally there is a different challenge - a different way of approaching a battle or mission or campaign ability - a different focus on heroes vs troops - plans/leadership vs pure dice luck etc…. Same as WW2, I have O Group, Chain of command, Battlegroup and Bolt Action; Napoleonics I have Black powder, GDA2, sharp practice, chosen men, absolute emperor and others etc…. Not to mention the Rampant and a fistful of Osprey games. You can never have too many rule systems!!!!! Just never enough gaming nights!!!!!! 😊
With this and Midgard, I think I need to eventually get around to starting the building the Victrix Late Roman/Romano British that I got a bit ago. I should get to them. I did see this advertised, but only once or twice. It does look like a good book.
Pre ordered this, so should be waiting for me when i get home from my overseas trip. I have a large pile for the layter end of the period, Saxon and Vikings but I may spread it down to Arthur as I like the 'late Romano British' look
Thanks for the great look at this book. I’m very interested and already ordered. I think it will be my 2025 project to build an Arthurian and Saxon force for a few battles in this book.
Last month I got a rules for SPQR, so maybe in 5 years I'll be able to play it. It is my first ever historical game and first ever time buying something from WG. I must say I really like the connection between the rules and historical fluffs. And yet that it is a product of rather big company I had a feeling that writers put fun first when writing it.
@@BootsontheTable we'll see. Saw that some guys already tweaked the rules to satisfy their needs. For me I will surely not play with I-go-you-go, but alternative activations - I have bad experience with it back from 40K.
Very nice review, Dom 👍. I may be slightly biased (!) but I think it is a great supplement, with lots of fun ideas for games and armies. Very characterful for games in the age of heroes 😀.
I got my copy, along with my Bolt Action 3e book and the heros for Once and Future king. I am kinda thinking about this 20% off sale Victrix has and considering getting enough early Saxons and Romano-British to make a couple of armies for the setting.
Very cool I my self have never played it the battle report are all ways good it's good job I can't get to the show at the weekend I might be tempted 😅😅😅
It's a great book mate with some good ideas. Shame it doesn't have the skirmish rules which book 1 had. The figure is an absolute joy to paint. I'm probably going to use this for scenarios and for info on characters for use in Midgard.
@BootsontheTable it's only a minor gripe but if you wanted the skirmish rules as well then you have to buy Sheildwall. So it would have been nice for the sake of completeness for someone who is only interested in Aurthur. Otherwise awesome book and very useful.
@@BootsontheTable They are cracking miniatures and are perfect for the period. Wargames Atlantic are making a starter army builder box set which will be excellent for rank and file but maybe not out till next year. Gripping Beast make Welsh, Irish and Pict in hard plastic which are useful for most of the so called Dark Ages and Wargames Atlantic make some good Irish with hunting dogs. I must get this supplement and my next project could be a couple of warbands for both sides
Interested? Yes. But since I have 100's of figures already purchased, I am maintaining some discipline not getting into another time period..... (so far!)

a match of all of those could be a lot of fun

Good review Dom... I already have the book but it's nice to hear someone give their opinion😊
It is mostly definitely a book worth having !
It really is!
Thank you , Dom .

Thank you too!

I know that feeling mate!
Thank you very much for showing the book Dom I was holding off till I saw what’s inside and after this I will be ordering it 👍👍
Glad it was helpful!

it seems very good reading it, will have to try some games though to really judge
@BootsontheTable it does look a good book. Even the background and photos seem good.

I frequently pull battle field maps from all different time periods to fight, both Napoleonic and fantasy battles.
Me too. It’s a good way to get inspiration

Welcome to the hobby. Those aren’t my favourite rules but I hope you enjoy them

certainly a good option

I am more of a massed battle person so suits me but I'll almost certainly play this and Midgard

Oh and some purchases may have been made!🙂
Get some Late Roman and Early Saxon stuff from Victrix and they will perfect to game the period and cost far less than lead
just working on some of the vary figures myself, very nice they are too

Fancy that Warlord Games release a new Dark Ages book at the same time as Midgard 😂
I doubt they were able to pull it together that quickly but it’s possible/probable they brought it forward

Fair enough! But you'll crack!
