I grew up in the Silicon Valley so it was common to have other kids’ parents work for tech companies. One of my friend’s dad worked for Intel and toured us both around the campus and into the labs where they worked on testing CPUs. My friend and I were working on a tech project involving an embedded Raspberry Pi and at the computer store he just bought me a Raspberry Pi to take home because he didn’t want me to feel left out. Point is- Intel employees are some of the nicest and most intelligent people in the whole Valley and their mismanagement by corporate money-grubbers is a damn shame.

@TheGoat no there are still benefits to a 5-10 year old laptop, it just need to be made well enough, with components that help extend its life and one that can easily be fixable.
I have a dual core laptop running at 2ghz with 2gb ram (not the slowest of old laptops). But the integrated gpu was never capable of handling 720p video at 30fps, this has automatically trashed the laptop as even a media playback machine. The build quality is also bad, being made out of plastic it has degraded over time at least esthetic wise.
I am sure we can build computers today that would still be useful 20-30 years down the road.

If you put your ear to the ground like Legolas in Lord of the Rings when he was listening for Orcs, you’ll be able to hear the thundering of a million strong keyboards being slammed on wildly as people begin to type up their “totally measured” response to your suggestion that AMD might not actually be the risen Christ.
I was on r/PCMR the other day and replied to a thread regarding GPUs that if you have an unlimited budget, you should buy a top end Nvidia. I got dog piled on. One guy said AMD makes better GPUs because they “care” about the consumer and that’s all that matters, as if caring about the consumer fixes their driver issues and somehow turbocharges their cards? It’s just so stupid.

Actually what he wants to say is that he is sad that Intel kind might be on artificial life support right now and AMD is taking the lead left and right. I agree that R&D is important and probably Intel has more money put into it but I can't believe that even with fewer resources you can't have good R&D. No matter how much money you put into it, at some point you won't get better results, unless you give it to aliens that are far more intelligent than humans. AMD is really pushing the envelope in thermal efficiency, 7nm processors, taking leads in production applications, and more importantly, keep the lead in price/perf. They must have done something right in R&D these years. I suspect they took some out of the GPU department to focus more on the CPU side of things. That's what Intel does. AMD took many chances in the past, still do, and in the ends it seems to pay off.

Screw the companies, users matter the most. I don't care if it's AMD or Intel who innovate, I just want it, period. So stop crying for Intel and praising AMD, instead look at what we got out of this "war", very good products from AMD, and Intel finally starting to move it's legs a bit. It's a cleverly disguised hit piece. Linus under the pretence of loving Intel creates a video to low-key hit Intel by asserting unjustified scaremongering regarding reliability. The whole motherboard power thing is a complete non-issue given the overengineered VRMs of todays' motherboards especially Z490 ones. As for the “unknown” I haven’t seen Linus making any videos pertaining to the unknown possible reliability issues regarding AMD cpus that run with voltages north of 1.4V even at stock and are at much MUCH greater risk of failing due to electromigration than Intel processors will ever be due to thermals. And speaking of reliability and thermals … he dumps on Intel about using thermal paste - thermal paste is far more reliable than solder which is likely to crack due to crack propagation induced from fatigue induced by thermal cycling. AMD 'forcing' Intel to use solder again was actually a backward move reliability-wise but hey I trust far more Intel's soldering than AMD's given that it is Intel that invented and patented the current state of the art cpu soldering technique.
And thermals by the way on Intel cpus are exaggerated anyway as these supposedly high temps that everyone focuses on only pertain to unrealistic stress testing (prime 95 small ffts AVX on, AIDA 64 FPU AVX on). Also most reviews report power from the wall mind you - not the cpu-only power consumption. In the real world, even if a real-world workload would put a big load on the cpu, it would not be anywhere near the prime 95 small FFT AVX and most importantly it would not do so for extended periods of time to impact reliability in any way anyway. It is not as anybody will be running this CPU (10900K) 24/7x365x5years at 80C doing heavy Blender AVX rendering. And we are just talking about the 10900K - not all the other skus lower in the stack that consume less power. Also, as a matter of fact, Intel’s cpus manufactured on that “geriatric 14nm process” as Linus call it, are more power efficient than AMD’s cpus on TSMC’s 7nm when it comes to higher clocks, when it comes to idle power and when it comes to light-threaded workloads. But hey let's focus on prime 95 small ffts and aida 64 fpu avx after 1 hour of run...because you know that's apparently very indicative of normal usage...Sigh, the stupidity in this world... I hope there was a pandemic targeting and wiping out the morons.

@@martiddy That is incorrect, adobe technology is not good, it's one of the best available but that doesn't make it good so much as it just doesn't have any serious competition (Which coincidentally allows it to not be good).
Although their business model is shady as hell, that's not what I was talking about here, their applications for one thing, have geniuinely piss poor performance. You ever try to do digital painting at high resolutions in Photoshop? It's a laggy piece of garbage (and this is necessary for serious digital artists, they need to go up to at least 8K resolution usually, sometimes over 10k, and by 8/10k I really mean the full 8000/10000px here, for one axis at least, the other may or may not be a bit lower to match a desired aspect ratio not what's called 8k resolution typically which is a lot smaller than that)
Yet it's the de-facto standard digital painting application. It's performance is acceptable if you're doing photo editing, more or less, but not for digital painting, yet it has no sufficiently superior rivals here, even if it really does not take much at all to beat them in this area, by a freaking mile, I'm genuinely surprised Corel has failed to do so (superior brush engines than in photoshop for sure, which 100% makes it preferable to photoshop but the performance is equal or worse, and it's pricing strategy? even worse than for photoshop)
What I really meant though when saying Adobe and Microsoft is companies that can establish and maintain pseudo monopolies. Although Windows is not 'technically' a monopoly, it's really a fucking monopoly, it forcefully established itself as the de-facto desktop OS, ruthlessly dealt with all competition it faced early on, grew large enough to get about 90% of all desktop users, and locked it's platform down so that all programs made for windows absolutely will not work on any other operating system.
Adobe's similar, if less sinister, I want to say it's just blind luck that photoshop remains the champion of photo editing and digital painting, but something tells me that that way of thinking is naive. Additionally, Adobe, Corel and a lot of other companies are supporting Microsoft's monopoly over the desktop PC, by not making their software cross platform, at best they support macs, but that's a freaking joke. Because macs are also another equally (or maybe even more) locked down platform as windows in the first place.
I'm not saying that software companies should support every single operating system officially and independently, what I'm saying is that they shouldn't have to, what microsoft and apple are doing should be illegal, we're living in a world that wasn't fully prepared for mass produced computers; a world that hasn't realized it, and a world that certainly fails to see the need to establish laws specifically surrounding consumer operating systems.
This is an entire branch of technology that microsoft are being allowed to monopolize, worse, microsoft is an incredibly corrupt company that steals your data and sells it (starting with windows 10 it's doing this) your data, my data, everyone's data, whether we're ok with it or not, it's just one of the costs of using their OS, a cost that if you don't want to pay it... Well then you're basically fucked and don't have any good options. Why? Because Microsoft have been allowed to monopolize the software world, not 'technically' monopolize it of course, since they're not truly forcing anyone to develop their software only for windows; but as a result of almost every software developer doing exactly that, it's become a monopoly, and don't think for a second that that's not what they intended.
This should not be allowed, there should be an established common open source standard software platform that is operating system agnostic that everyone would develop for. It should be illegal for a proprietary commercial operating system not to fully support that platform, and support it with all of it's APIs, libraries and programming languages so that users of other operating systems can use any program developed for those operating systems as long as they too support this platform, as one possible idea.
Something needs to be freaking done about this. Right now, microsoft, as a measly corporation, has power significantly greater than a major government, and google has power even greater than that, thanks mostly to android, but also youtube and of course google.
It's all fucked, and all of this could have been prevented with healthy competition such as what we're seeing between AMD and Intel right now. You can bet your ass that processor technology is going to improve by leaps soon. Because intel, being on the ropes, can no longer keep making improvements in such small increments that a processor from 10 years ago is almost as powerful as the new best thing, it's already starting with the massive increase of processor cores in the average processor. And AMD will have to respond in kind to whatever intel does, creating a positive feedback loop which in the end benefits us, consumers, as we get better tech.
But there's no one to keep adobe and microsoft in check, at all.

This episode of Linus Tech Tips is a humble advice from Linus to intel regarding their ongoing behaviour and how intel could damage its reputation of being a reliable and polished product designer and manufacturer, he further solidifies his concerns by referencing to the past where intel did a mistake of haphazardly responding to rising competition from AMD and is worried the intel could repeat the same mistake with the 10th gen, which hints his request bias to the business and management side of intel. He humbly advises intel to take a deep breath and focus on taking the time and money to develop newer better products to go against AMD rather than just running through the fire on a path to sustained upper hand in market share.

When they get to the point where they are not able to improve the product but there is a push on them to innovate will cause stupid moves, especially drastic moves that makes them look like they did something special, because the other didn't. This is why we are not having headphone jacks. Or ethernet ports on laptops. I don't want to see that future where processor manufacturers are removing essential features just to show how they are up to date.

Great video Linus. I worked at Intel when Andy Grove was CEO and one thing he drummed in to everyone was to be paranoid about the competition (in a good way). Never under estimate your “enemy” and that together, Intel employees can achieve anything. If this ethos is still there at Intel then have no fear - they will return and it would not surprise me if AMD get their butts kicked. It is not good at the moment for Intel but like the Catholic Church it deals in the long game. When I was there, I remember one BUM (Business Update Meeting) where Andy Grove spoke about how Intel had the opportunity to buy AMD. Andy said the Board had decided against it as they felt AMD would never be more than a thorn in their side but more importantly competition is good for Intel...

full disclosure: I just bought an amd high-end processor. Idk, if it's since you did that "i'm retiring" stream, and idk if its just me, but i just love the amount of nuance you've been showing in videos lately. i don't mean necessarily specs wise, but on a human level. the first 30 ish seconds of this video summed it up for me. yes there are so many big companies, and yes the companies at time suck. but they are all made up of amazing people, that do amazing things. I've worked as a rep for a big company before, with at the time an inferior product value wise, but I did what i could to help people find the right product, regardless of brand and knew that the product i was supposed to sell wasn't for everyone. i relate to that story of the guy who showed you the exciting new tech just for shits and giggles. thank you from another BC guy for being rational, and fucking real.

agree, as AMD Fanboy (I heard blue pitchfork coming for me), I love Intel give a true fight! I kinda love when intel on 4XXX to 6XXX, which very-very good performance and until today we see still many user use CPU form that generation, even for me that time, reconsider to didn't wait ZEN and just go build i7 6XXX cpu that time. I mean, Linus right there point it out, AMD is have people there, but LESS than intel had... and AMD must fight not only 1 company, but 2, which is NVIDIA as well... with less resource that each competitor had...
I really wish Intel give good fight back, because the right fight will push AMD more, and we as customer benefit from it, which we will get better technology, performance, and design. We like price war, but those 3 point also important as well.

I've been using Intel processor(I5-6600K) to produce productivity(Main in GIS and RS etc) far before the AMD ZEN was announced.
Last month I switched to 3500X into my regular works, and it wasn't pleasure, I first had to change my memories because their frequency doesn't match, causing sudden reboot\froze. And I also got caught by too many issues using my software, no big deal, but annoying.
Left alone the slight performance lag compare to AMD‘s, the Intel processor has performed astonishing stability&compatibility during my days. I can even drunk out of consciousness and work on it and woke up second day found out my games and tools still running fine.
So my point is Intel is not that suck for you guys to exaggerate. I'm going to exchange this 3500X for I5 10500, and finally leave all those AMD issues behind.
High score DOESN'T mean everything. I will still put my bet on Intel!

@Jai Rey "stone age" would be 14-nm 4-core non hyper threaded, with the hyper threaded option being an enthusiast feature that costs way too much, locked clock speeds for non-enthusiasts chips also, possibly gated by chipset requirements to appease mobo manufacturers, "unlocked" clocks being a premium feature, possibly the same thing with boost speeds, a feature I can see further gated by TDP limitations, which also gets into warranty territory. Also compatibility with PCIE-lanes. Graphics on-board? well, certainly not gaming quality in any way, at best you get 2D desktop maybe perhaps (sad that I have to say that about Intel, but without an AMD competitor would they really have been driving small form factor, graphics and mobile so hard??)
