$100 Breakfast! Why is IRAQ so expensive?

  • I thought Iraq would be cheap given its turbulent history and the fact that the costs of things in its neighboring countries usually are, for those coming with US dollars. I was wrong.

There is also a very poor side of the city and the whole region.
Many who got rich, are not the result of their hard work. A lot of corruption is going on in the region.
Also, many young people are leaving the country as there are no jobs, and the people who are working barely afford to pay their rents.
I also want to mention that, actually most people here stay at home during night and if they go to a mall or something, mostly it is for a walking and they don't have money to buy all these expensive stuff which 99% came from outside the country.

Yeah this video is giving a skewed view to younger or less traveled youtube viewers who are going to think all of Iraq is like this. This guy is hanging out in regions where the upper class benefited from the US invasion. The majority of Iraqis suffered. Let's not forget the US killed a million Iraqi civilians. Videos like this are popping up all over youtube, backhandedly implying that the US invasion made Iraq a "civilized" country. I suspect they are being funded by the US intelligence agencies in order to make impressionable young people support future wars and invasions.

I love love your videos i really enjoy the vlogs that you publish here and i really liked your videos on CNBC and i am really glad that you made it to my home country, just as a small clarification erbil tends to be a bit more expensive than the other cities in iraqi kurdistan but some of the prices that you showed were not normal most places do not cost that much, a typical breakfast in the city which includes yogurt, nuts, honey, cheese, tea and water is probably for around 5000 to 7000 iqd, it costs 3000 iqd or 2$ where i live in suli, a city which is a couple of hours away. a typical hair cut goes for around 5000 iqd and even with facials and everything it does not exceed 20 000 iqd so it depends on where you are going and also on whether you are foreigner or not cuz unfortunately, tho this does not happen regularly, they may overcharge tourists and foreigners a bit more sometimes.
actually i have been to turkey i just came back a couple of months ago from there and on average turkey tends to be more expensive than where i am from
BTW if you needed any clarifications or had any questions about prices or anything here in iraqi kurdistan feel free to ask i will be more than happy to help

I wonder though, are those tourist prices or everyone is charged the same? Lots of good spots in Europe, like Venice have local and tourist menus. My experience in Venice was like this - since we rented the flat neighbouring the cafe, where we bought 3 coffees each every day for 1 euro, we got well with a bartender. We saw other tourist get charged for 3 euros for the same coffee, though. Bartender explained this as a management forcing them to charge tourists more as they know the prices in Venice already and when we went to eat there, we were given menus from the restaurant (by a waiter outside the bar), and the tourist menu had a limited meal choice and 30-50% price difference, so we requested for a menu that was placed on the barstool. The waiter did not want to give it, but he did, still. Meal was good, but it's outrageous how people are getting charged more for being a different nationality than the country they are in.

And even with todays budget is higher than most Arab countries and their spending power is quiet high so currency isn’t a problem. Oh and visit Kurdistan for sure, so you will see the truth in live action with your own eyes rather than so called fake facts. FYI, facts also say a lot about Middle Easterns and Muslims in the media or Google and they are just western media brainwashing the world. Now, it's time for you to see the reality with your own eyes and get yourself out of this brainwashing because WE EXIST and IT IS NOT UP TO IRAQ TO DECIDE THAT. This are some of the posh side of Erbil which I think is quiet a balance when you look at the bigger northern Iraq. Used to live and work there around 2012 - 2014. I also think they should be granted independence since it’s a default capital for the Kurds which is the largest ethnic group in the world without a country. Most of the Kurds lived sporadically in the region.
