old guy tip #1 trim your nails (fingers and toes) 2 or 3 days before a tournament. #2 make sure your shoe laces are tight and your shoes fit snugly on your feet (this guarantees solid footing within your control) i also like to put some foot or baby powder inside my socks and shoes and have fresh socks for any following rounds. #3 don't practice excessively right b/4 a tournament , it will wear you out. being well rested, hydrated and fed (avoid heavy meals like Waffle House. i prefer Subway ) will help your game much more than 500 more putts. Good luck.
Good one Danny. Always carry TWO minis. Always carry THREE pencils. Always have TWO poops beforehand! Make sure that someone in the group is keeping the score on a phone app. When adding up the scores, ensure that all cards agree with the app, and resolve any differences. Always be VERY aware of your card mates, and do not talk when they are shaping up, or throwing. The 10-metre circle is TWELVE (12) normal male paces. 11 would be 30 feet.
You're the best! You killed the introduction, hilarious! My first tournament was a B tier. I signed up for Pro Masters and got last. Also grabbed my card with my name on it so they wanted that back of course. Had a great time though, and have been playing tournaments ever since.
first timers are always thinking they are not good enough to play tournaments and this thought might be what prevents them from signing up to begin with...just take the leap and do it.... Your nerves will settle and that crappy shot you took ? Well, it will look good after you see some of the crappy shots that others will surely throw..... LOL
I actually learned a shit ton from my first tournament. My card mates had tons of great advice. If anyone is thinking about doing a tournament just tell your card mates you're new and they'll usually be really nice.
I've playing for myself for about 9 months now and at one point I wanted to make a long term goal to play in a tournament when I've played for myself for at least a year. There are too many things going on with my game and mentally keeping me from doing them now. 1. I have a really bad habit of falling forward on my putts since I'm not confident in my putting. 2. I have a habit of foot faulting on my drives so I just do my drives without a run-step up for the most part. 3. It does comfort me when you mention that tournaments aren't as competitive as one would think because I'm not really much of a competitive person. 4. I overall play especially bad when I'm playing with other people. Especially those are really good since in my head when I see how well they play it gives me too high of expectations for myself even though they've been playing for years. I'm slowly getting more used to playing and learning while playing with other people though so I think I can eventually get past that. 5. Since my play is so inconsistent I get overly frustrated very easily which causes my rounds to completely fall apart and I'm not really having fun at all. Like...REALLY frustrated like I get legit angry sometimes at myself. I know at the end disc golf is just a game but my anxiety makes it a bigger deal than it really is. 6. I'm a side arm thrower. I can't really do back hand that much yet.
I could have used this video three days sooner. Competed for the first time two days ago in a B-tier. Got 2nd place in Intermediate or MA2 or whatever it's called. Had a great time. Fortunately did not suffer from not any of the rules explained in the video.
Another well done video! Very very helpful information as I consider playing in a tournament. Was hoping to meet you while I was spectating at Ledgestone, next time!! Thanks again for all you do!
This was a good introduction to tournaments. I've played in 3 the past year or so, and all 3 were ones where you had to play with the discs you were given in your players pack. These are generally difficult for me, as I'm used to playing with lighter weight, understable discs, and then I get stuck driving with a 172 River Pro I've never thrown before. =) Still, they are quite fun, nice to play with guys who can offer tips or help with form. Everyone I've met at tourneys has been super friendly.
Looks like you played well to me, crushed your rating. The one tip I would add is to try and show up the day before and throw the course if possible, makes a huge difference.
Great tip but this ain't my first rodeo. I worked Monday, drove up Tuesday, and practiced the course at least twice Wednesday with several groups of people to see how they attacked the course.
My first tournament is next week. B tier event in Smyrna, TN. I've been playing for a couple of months. My biggest concerns have nothing with playing, except they might make Novice still play the pro/regular tees instead of the Alts on a couple holes. Outside of that, it's just handling a full day of 2 rounds with a temp course I've never seen for one round. The heat and bugs are going to be outrageous unless it rains. Lasting the full day is going to be my big hurdle.
Question about passing the scorecard around.... Is it a courtesy violation for refusing to keep score for the group? I recently ran into this issue at the BG Ams last month where a player on the card refused to keep score for everyone on the card. He mentioned that he was keeping his own score. He never kept score on the card. I've researched this in the rule book and found: 808.B Scoring - Players in the group keep score proportionally, unless a player or a scorekeeper volunteers to keep score more and that is acceptable to all players in the group. Followed up by: 812.B Courtesy - A player must: Keeping score properly. Violation or not?
I jumped head first into a tournament after 4.5 months of playing, lol! got matched in a group with pretty serious guys, 1 who gave a book about discgolf, another dude who came third total.... So it was an interesting experience. i came 2nd last total xD but fun!
3:00 I find if I don't take a dump before a tournament it gives me a little bit more torque in my throws. Something to think about next time;-) AND if feels sooo much better when you finally do release after a good round;-)
Hi! I'm not a pdga member, but I plan on playing in a c-tier tournament this weekend on my home course, &...I'm wanting to know if I'd be eligible to take home cash in the open division if a miracle happened & I placed high enough.
Something I notice a ton of players getting wrong is the meter relief, and in order to measure out the relief, they use 3 steps in line. If you actually measure it out, you can usually add an extra 6 inches to your 3 inline steps to get to a full meter. This is for average feet sizes of course. I wear size 11 shoes, and 3 inline steps for me doesn't get to a meter.
Elephantricity the wording is "up to a meter" so people just take three steps to be safe. I played with a guy who had size 17 shoes once and he'd go a few inches shorter.
Legal now but at one point until 2004 the disc had to be made of a single piece of plastic, could not have 2 plastics for the disc golf disc. Then the first disc a Wham-O Max Flight was the first disc legal for PDGA use.
@@chasler2001 it was a great experience and I had a lot of fun. I had to play with the guys because no women other than me and they were all understanding and really nice. I have since signed up for more tournaments. Good luck and have fun!
One thing i found out the hard way is while preparing for a tournament, DO NOT play multiple (3+) rounds each day during the days immediately leading up to a tournament. My first tournament I play 3+ rounds each day for the 3 days leading up to the tournament, then, by the day of the tournament my body/arm were both completely shot & I put up an embarrassingly high score...getting familiar with the course & doing some light practice to get a game plan is definitely necessary, but don't burn yourself out thinking you're going to make major last minute changes.
I was trying to find somewhere in the rule book that said the rule you were talking about throwing from the fairway your for needs to be 33cm (11inches) but couldn't find it. In 802.04 it says one supporting point in contact with the lie but doesn't specify 33cm
I just started disc gold less than a month ago and just threw my first 300ft plus shot at practice this afternoon. I'm entering the next tournament in my area and I'm still not sure what I have to do to enter to win the Warden but please consider me entered lol. Love you videos man :)

I agree that's a good way of going about things for first timers. Though I'm a first timer but it's not that simple for me. It's complicated.
Thanks man
I'm one of those, only 2 months of exp. Going to give a shot after this winter!
Playing in my first tournament the 27th of this month. Your comment help relieve a little stress, appreciate the wise words hahah

Great video ! Thanks Im a newbie lol!
Thanks for the video on disc golf rules. I knew some but didn't know others. I really need to get me a copy of the rule book!
I need a new copy.
This would have been helpful when I played my first tournament in June. Was only playing for a month didn't know what I was doing but had fun

Danny Lindahl i assumed you did that, i ment for the newbies in your video.
Vengeful oh that makes a lot more sense lol. I was assuming a local tournament.
Danny Lindahl that's funny, i have to travel to all my tourneys, so never considered the local angle. Anyways good video, lots of good info.
Great video, thank you! I'm new to disc golf and trying to play more by the rules. Gotta find a mini!
Great video Danny! Thanks for all the pointers!

Good overview for tournaments. Only thing you forgot was a bit of etiquette. But you can cover it in a later video. Thanks for the great videos!
This video actually works out great! Im going to a tournament Aug 26th.
Ruidoso?
Ya
Lucas Johnson good luck, heard it's a good hike. I had to back out but will be attending next year.
Now i have some basics for my first tournament coming up in a few weeks. Thanks for the opportunity to win a free disk also
Would you recommend to play conservative in a tournament or rather risky in order to (maybe) get a better score than usually?
My first tournament I won a putter... For being so shit. But it was fun and I got pretty buzzed off local brewery beer... But I digress

Best line...

gstardestroyer165 yes you will be paid cash if you place high enough.
Thanks. You're the man!
How do you score a missed mandatory? I assume your are reteeing but are you throwing 2 or 3
I was the guy that grabbed his name card on my 1st tournament. Live and learn. This is me entering the thing in the thing.
Actually pdga rules say you can place your mini anywhere around your disc. Not infront of or closest to the basket
Something I notice a ton of players getting wrong is the meter relief, and in order to measure out the relief, they use 3 steps in line. Good first tourney tips.
Don't forget:
Drink Water
Take a Stool and use it. Tourney rounds take forever.
New bag has a seat built into it.
I like watching what you do it is hard for me to through far for a women over 60 I WOULD LIKE to be better
Do you have to use a mini, or can you just leave the original disc you threw?
Britt Markum most cases you can just leave your disc but when reusing the same disc, metering in, or marking a disc in a tree you need to use a mini.
I'm cool with using a mini, but I never understand why another full size disk from your bag isn't used.
Ion Ymous because it can cause confusion. If I mark a disc with another disc, I might forget and mark it again moving me closer to the basket.
yeah, that makes sense. i could imagine others being confused about it even though I know what disc I threw and used as a marker. thanks!
God question ion. Thanks 4 the 411 Danny.
I have had a tournament where one card mate did not have the scorecard as she a junior at the time would forget to count her putt into the score.
Is there an age restriction for tournaments?
so shirt and shoes required.... well... at least pants are still optional.
When I putt I often do a table top into a push putt. Is there anything wrong with this?
Doesn't matter how you throw it, as long as you don't foot fault.
Packersrulealways ok, I didn't know if in anyway it could limit me. I don't take many putts outside the circle but I didn't know if once I got outside of of it I could be screwed up.
Good stuff, thanks!
