Learn 5 common idioms I frequently hear used in Britain in this British expressions and pronunciation lesson. Idioms will help you sound more confident and fluent when you speak English, so write these down, and use the British accent tips I give you to make them sound perfect!
Remember, you don't NEED an RP British accent to speak English well... There are loads of accents out there! I'm just here to help people who have a love for modern versions of RP.

I absolutely adore that "Running dogs and cats":))) Well, living in Ireland , I hear this lovely idiom quite often from mature Irish Gentlemen, and have hearing these words, every time I begin looking around - where ARE all those dogs and cats running away of the heavy rain?😂Thanks for the lovely lesson, Alian😊

I learned British English when I began speaking English. Born in Ceylon before the name change and then moved to England when I was two. Relocated to the United States when I was 10 1/2 and was teased about my English accent and retrained in American English. My pronunciation changes at home when I talk to my parents though - more British sounding but with a sing-song Ceylonese intonation. And they use words no longer used in modern Britain -- dickey for boot (of a car); spectacles or specs instead of "glasses". Also, cinema instead of "the movies" and biscuit instead of "cookie". I've noticed a fair number of American words and phrases have crept into British English - " out in the sticks", for example, is an American expression. So is "cold turkey".

I’m from Canada. I thought “middle of nowhere” and “out in the sticks” were Canadian expressions. I grew up with these. I’m glad to know they are legitimately British and current. “Neck of the woods” and “cold turkey” are also commonly used here. “Do a runner” is not used in Canada. There’s one difference..... I’m here because I need to give up Trump news videos cold turkey. They are not good for my blood pressure.
