  • In this second episode on perhaps the most notorious assasination in world history, Tom and Dominic look at the bloody and chaotic aftermath of the death of Julius Caesar. They discuss the fate of the senators turned assassins, their failure to restore the institutions of the republic, and the ensuing civil war that brought about the first emperor of Rome.

Dominic makes the valid point that the fall of Rome was an inevitability because of the stretch of power, wealth, and the usage of a government that wasn't suited for the empire was all bound to implode, and I wonder if that will happen with America and China.

I know episode 304 is missing, but this story needs to start with the tribune of the plebs, Marius and Sulla.

You could go back even further to the Brothers Gracchi.

@@saltmerchant749 oh, I forgot a comma, as in the Gracci used the position of tribune of the plebs to bypass their respective offices

@@saltmerchant749 just reviewed the wikipedia page, and it ignores certain important facts. Tribune of the plebs, was an office with term limits to be held by the plebs. As patricians they were bypassing the normal patrician promotion path, offices, to senator. The tribune of the plebs had enormous veto power.

I wish they would have mentioned that when Antony had Cassius over he joked with Cassius about having brought a dagger with him and Cassius replied I do have a dagger and if you act like Ceaser you might get to see it. Not a very joking friendly kind of guy lol

Sorry folks, when historians ask "what if", really? The rest of the podcast was great.
