    A week on from the half marathon in Copenhagen I find myself in the pacer role this weekend. My boyfriend Daniel has challenged himself to break his Parkrun PB. With a flat course, me (a 2:29 marathoner) as his pacer, and some good months of training behind him I think he is on to a winner!

    I absolutly love this , where partners of runners are inspired to run and we get to see the improvements (Ben and Mary, or Matt and Kellogs), it is smashing to see yet another suportive superstar , bringing their loved one into the nutty past time. (I am getting soft in my old age but it's the truth).

    A great video that reminds me of my own PB attempt in the summer to go from 22:52 to sub 22:30. I far prefer long distance, and 5k terrifies me whilst I'm mostly relaxed about marathons or ultras. In July, a group from my club planned to go for a PB at Rickmansworth parkrun, but we arrived to be told that it was cancelled. We made a dash to Cassiobury in Watford. Meanwhile, my pacer was unwell, so couldn't make it. I ran a PB by one second, which I was very frustrated about, and after training hard over the summer, I felt like giving up at running the short distance. However, I was away in Copenhagen the following week, and decided to run parkrun there with no pressure. It was only after two miles that I realised I was on PB target pace, and I finished in 22:29. It gave me a huge confidence boost, when I thought it wasn't possible just a week earlier.

    My 5K times improved "for free" during my Marathon block. I broke 25 minutes for the first time on a 2X5Km tempo on both reps.
    And PBed a 21:47 on a race deep in the marathon block having run 20K long the day before.
    I believe with some 5K specifics I could break 20 mins in a year or so.

    We had pacemakers at our parkrun yesterday. Despite thinking I was always trying my best, following the 26min pacemaker took me to a new PB (25:59). Without him I would definitely have been 30 seconds slower.
    My Garmin watch always says that I can go way faster (it predicts 23:44). Which is hopeful but always unrealistic.
    Following the pacemaker, I never had to look at my watch to run faster. It was just better following someone with a good reliable pace. They kept faster in sections where I would normally be slowing down and I tried harder to counter that.

    • @toddapplegate3988
      @toddapplegate3988 Год назад +2

      Don't trust Garmin watch. My watch says xyz for 5k and then I run that during an interval session without it even being part of the goal. I find that it under or over estimates based on the kind of running you are doing. My Vo2 goes down and my predicted times go down when I run zone 2(5or,6 zone system) but goes up if I include more zone 3 or above runs. It predicted a 2hr half marathon when I was running 9:00 pace zone 2 for 7 miles regularly.
